Goodbye golden dose

Apologies for the Daily Mail link.

I remember reading ages ago that the KwikPens were originally used for something else (some other non-related medicine), and were re-purposed for Mounjaro. They had to put extra liquid in them so as to fill the pen, but of course this led to people using the extra liquid to get an extra dose out of their very expensive product.

They are now updating the kwikpen design to eliminate the opportunity to use the golden dose. Sigh. I’ve always used it as I could see literally no logical reason not to, so I will miss getting five doses per pen rather than four.

What with that and the upping of the price I’m rather annoyed at Eli Lilly. Not annoyed enough to stop using their product though, which I guess is what they’re counting on!

Fresh blow to Mounjaro users as pen change kills 'golden dose'

Mounjaro users will soon be getting less for their money after drug manufacturer Eli Lily confirmed that a change to their KwikPens mean there will be less medicine in each pen.

This was quite widely discussed a while ago.

Honestly I'm surprised that it's taken them this long to redesign the pens.
They really don't need to put all that extra liquid into each pen.

There are many who don't/won/t use that 5th dose and it's not supposed to be used anyway. So big waste.

It's specifically designed as a 4 usage dose pen. not a 5 dose pen.
So only put enough in for 4 doses plus priming.

I always use that 5th dose, but I'm not in the slightest bit surprised it's changing.
Yes it's a bugger and does change the pricing of a pen if only 4 doses can be extracted instead of 5.

I’m not surprised either though it is disappointing, especially when coupled with the price rises!

As an aside, that article can only be read if you pay a Daily Mail subscription so apologising for linking to it seems bats! Grin When you must pay for it otherwise you wouldn’t have been able to read it.

😢. Avoid the DM website by using an archive site (also works to get around the paywall) https://archive.ph/FoNOV

I am having a go at using the golden dose for the first time tomorrow, I haven't attempted it up to now. I also have have 2 pens in the fridge and hope to get the extra dose out of those as well, after that I am not sure what I am going to do with the prices shooting up.

NotPerfectlyAdverage · 09/09/2025 16:17

I'm hoping I can come off asap. It's not just the 5th dose, it's everything. The price hike. If it was something like Sky we would all be saying jog on

It’s got to do with it because the price increase of 170% for four doses is a double whammy.

Er, I do not pay the Daily Mail a penny. Don’t know what you’re on about, seems like I’m not the one who’s ‘bats’.

You don't need a sub to read those articles. Just use the reader on a browser.

Edited: That's not even behind a paywall so no idea what you're chatting about.

What! It is for me! That’s so strange!

IGaveSoManySigns · 09/09/2025 17:01

I mean.

You were never supposed to take the extra dose. I’m surprised it’s taken this long and that so many people were willing to play with fire.

SilenceInside · 09/09/2025 17:17

Is it playing with fire? The reasons for removing the leftover medication are not to do with excessive risk for patients but more to do with cost savings and profits for Eli Lilly surely. Less medication in each pen is cheaper for them. Plus people who use the additional dose now won’t be able to and so will be ordering pens more frequently, so sales will likely increase. If peiple don’t switch to Wegovy in large numbers, which they might do.

Play with fire? What you in about? The extra bit is meant to be for priming the pen. Ain’t rat poison!

Yes, to be used within a certain amount of time!

SilenceInside · 09/09/2025 17:25

@IGaveSoManySigns you can do a 5th dose within the 30 days usage limit. Dose 1 is on day 1, then the other doses are on days 8, 15 and 22. The additional 5th dose is therefore on day 29.

MJMabel · 09/09/2025 17:27

Exactly @SilenceInside

But you were never supposed to.

SilenceInside · 09/09/2025 17:54

Yes. The manufacturer did not intend for people to use the leftover medication as an additional dose. Not sure what point you’re making here?

But that’s not what she was answering to. Whether you were ‘supposed to’ or not. You said that the medication was to be used in a certain time and that’s what the response was to.

But you were never supposed to.

But it’s the same medication. It can be used within the 30 day guidelines.

Anyway the amount being left in the pen is being reduced so it is just 4 jabs and a bit for priming.

Unfortunately, not being able to access the fifth dose will make MJ even more expensive and therefore unaffordable for some.

This is a good example of price discrimination in action. Some users are being forced onto alternatives and even more worryingly some may look for MJ on the black market.
