Looks like as well as increasing the prices by 170%, Eli Lilli are reducing the pen size so no more golden dose - I only did my first one yesterday.
So the meds will cost even more in future.

Fresh blow to Mounjaro users as pen change kills 'golden dose'

Mounjaro users will soon be getting less for their money after drug manufacturer Eli Lily confirmed that a change to their KwikPens mean there will be less medicine in each pen.

There will be lots more products to come, people will move away from this one as sure many fed up with all the hikes. Surely there has to be extra with all the priming involved ?

It's interesting to see big pharma rake in the money before the patent is lost in a few years. I've always used every last drop of MJ.

I thought 2 clicks were needed for priming - so either priming isn't that important after all or profits are more important than priming.

SilenceInside · 11/09/2025 11:17

The 2 clicks for priming represents about 0.02ml of medication. There was at least 0.6ml provided in the pen on top of the 2.4ml provided for the 4 x 0.6ml doses. That's enough medication to prime 30 times over or more, more than 7 times per injection at least. That was clearly far too much additional medication to provide for the purposes of priming. The pens could have just an additional 0.3ml of medication and still have plenty available for priming, so half of what's there now.

Priming is necessary, to check that the needle is attached correctly. Trying to inject with an incorrectly attached or damaged needle can damage the pen.

mamabeeboo · 11/09/2025 11:37

@SilenceInside I agree there was too much for priming. Not sure how many clicks available for priming on the new pens, maybe exactly 0.2ml per dose?

I can't help but think we really have been paying over the odds for the jabs. Apparently 0.8ml can be taken away just like that, but cost is the same (technically more with the price rises).

It reminds me of cost of living all over again - pay more to get less.

SilenceInside · 11/09/2025 12:08

The instructions for the pen say to try priming up to 4 times, so at 0.02ml a time, that would be a maximum of 0.32ml of medication needed for priming 4 times for 4 doses. There would need to be a little more to account for dead space, so maybe 0.4ml of additional medication would be enough. That would reduce the total volume to 2.8ml down from the approx 3.3ml that there is now.

We have previously been getting the best deal for Mounjaro in all the countries in the EU and the in US, we were paying a much reduced price compared to those countries. Add in the fact that there was enough medication remaining to do an additional dose, then we were getting a really good price for this medication. The combination of the recent price hike and the reduction in the amount of medication left over means we are coming more into line with other countries. It sucks for us, but we have had a good deal up to this point.

big pharma earn a lot more from obesity related diseases, obviously when they could help people to live longer healthier lives.impacts on pensions everything I suppose. People lining their pockets as usual and not those in need.
