Weight loss injections/treatments

Discuss weight-loss injections and treatments, including personal experiences. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any treatments.

Thread 2 because we have reached our goal weights and we want to maintain not regain. We might be going cold turkey or titrating down or staying on!

Can't believe we filled up a whole thread! Welcome to thread 2.

On a positive note to start us off, I've lost 1lb of the two that I gained from my autumnal apple crumble caper. Filling full of resolve and pleased to know I can gain a pound or two (which is of course completely normal) and then lose them again.

@Azuresky68 lovely to see you here too! Sorry to hear that you are going to need surgery. I hope it isn't too big an op. Do you know when you will have it? Do you have to come off MJ before the surgery?

Thank you. I won't find out until mid November when I have an appointment with surgical team. There are 4 hypothalmus glands behind the thyroid. Depends on how many are affected..can be day surgery with local or general anaesthetic. Feeling pretty anxious to be honest 😕

Just in case you want to do a bit more reading about it and are feeling confused the hypothalamus is in the brain. The four glands behind the thyroid in the neck are called parathyroids. - parathyroid surgery is usually very well tolerated. Hope you don’t mind me butting in but I work in this area and I know it can be very confusing with all the different glands and hormones they produce xx

Oh thank you! And indeed I am very confused..it is my parathyroid not hypothalmus 😱

@Incognitoburrito88 you are not butting in at all. I am very grateful for any advice and reassurance as I am anxious and scared. The only time I have been in hospital was when I had to have 2 C sections many years ago..39 years ago was last one. I don't want to hijack the thread so maybe I could DM you?
Not got my surgical appointment until mid November and I am away on holiday before that. The only information I have so far is what I read on the NHS website. Not going to read anymore though.
Thanks again.

MargoLivebetter · 29/10/2025 08:25

I think this thread is the best of MN sometimes. So glad that @Incognitoburrito88 knows about all things thyroid, parathyroid and hypothalamus. Fingers crossed for you @Azuresky68 . I think any procedure is going to be a bit anxiety inducing, but hopefully it will sort you out and help you feel better. Fingers crossed for you.

anyone has info about the tablet - think I read it may come out next year - wonder what cost will be and wondering if a low dose would help with maintenance

Azuresky68 · 28/10/2025 11:20

Good morning everyone.
Some of my fellow August 2024 starters are on this group but thought i would introduce myself.
Following this thread with great interest.
I've maintained since June with a blip after 3 weeks away in a different country. Got back to my goal by going up to 15 mg for a few weeks. Been on holiday recently for nearly 3 weeks and stayed the same weight. I am going down the doses and had my first jab of 7.5 on Sunday. Like many I am so scared of regaining weight and didn't plan to ever come off MJ.
I'm 69 years old and have had a lifelong battle with my weight. I am now the lightest I have been in most of my adult life and 23.6 BMI

Only a shortie so can only lose weight on 1000 calories. Maintenance calories are around 1350. I always calorie count apart from on holiday and big celebrations.
Hoping to eventually maintain on 5 mg or 2.5.

Recently diagnosed with a condition called hyperthyroidism, apparently quite rare but I am probably going to have to have surgery.
The parathyroid has a different function to the thyroid and if it's not working properly this can lead to kidney stones (had these) and osteoporosis.
Some of the symptoms of parathroidism are exactly the same as side effects of MJ...tiredness, constipation, upset tummy, aching joints, thirsty, weeing a lot. Lucky for me that they detected my condition as I just assumed these things were happening because I was on MJ.

That's more than enough from me. Looking forward to continuing the maintenance journey and getting through the winter months together.

Wishing everyone the very best ☺️

Hi.
I'm not at maintenance yet (9 lbs to go) but I read most of the threads. Your post struck as I'm in my 60's and a shortie. I had a parathyroidectomy in February and realised after the operation how lethargic and ill I felt leading up to it which I think contributed to my weight gain.
If this is the surgery you will be having I can assure you that you will feel great afterwards.

MargoLivebetter · 29/10/2025 10:50

@Lifecircle sounds like you are nearly there! Good luck with the final few pounds.

Oh thanks so much for responding. That's very reassuring. I may DM you too if that's OK 👍

Fluffypiece · 29/10/2025 11:45

I’m nearly at goal now and wondering about those who’ve been there for a while what your experience of skin laxity is? Most of my face and body is ok laxity wise but the backs of my legs I feel sort of flap in the wind!! I work out and taking collagen and eating a lot of protein etc. Does it sort of catch up with your weight loss? Or have you tried treatments to help that have either worked or definitely not worked! Thanks lovely ladies xx

MargoLivebetter · 29/10/2025 12:13

@Fluffypiece not sure how old you are, but as a post-menopausal person I have been very aware of this!

I have less flap now than I did in January when I hit goal, but I'm definitely not taut fleshed like a 25 year old!!! 😂I think the older you get the longer it takes for the skin to tighten up.

sounds like there are a few people who can offer advice and wisdom on this thread and there are probably many more who aren’t on WLI who have experience of the surgery. You could try starting a thread in health to get as much advice as possible. I can’t help at all I’m afraid but good luck with the op.

Thelittlestranger · 29/10/2025 13:48

@Fluffypiece the backs of my legs were definitely swinging a little when I first lost the weight. I've been maintaining now since July and they have definitely got better. I'm doing quite a lot of exercise (weights and running)

The skin is still quite crepey on my arms - weirdly on the bottom half (who knew I had weight to lose there!!) but I'm hoping it will still improve. I'm 48 if that helps...I take collagen, but I definitely don't moisturise enough (at all!)

MagnoliaTreePetals · 29/10/2025 14:16

Yes @Fluffypiece I have nice patches on my upper legs that resemble deflated balloons! However having been at target for a couple of months now I have noticed that they are less crinkly and seem to be getting smaller in area. Also, my little belly roll seems to be going down slowly. people keep asking if I'm still losing weight but I think it is gently toning up that is having the effect.
I don't exercise that over-enthusiastically; hand weights and stretching exercises in the mornings and long walks/swimming a few times a week.

Sit' Rep' on the maintenance. Having convinced myself that I had put on weight this week, I found that I had actually lost 1.5lb. My confidence in the process waxes and wanes, but each week seems to prove I am doing it the way that works for me.
I now inject 12.5mg every 12 days, which is working well. I will go to 13 days soon, but am working it around trips away and an operation when they want me to have jabbed at least 7 days beforehand.
The thing I really value is being able to decide for myself what I am going to do and when.

Fluffypiece · 29/10/2025 14:27

Thank you so much @MargoLivebetter @Thelittlestranger and @MagnoliaTreePetals - that is reassuring! I’m 57 so definitely not much spring left in this skin! And @MagnoliaTreePetals i really empathise - I find it very easy to imagine I’ve put in weight!!! Great to hear your confidence in the process slowly increasing. It’s hard to believe this could be me for the rest of my life. I keep saying to myself ‘I’m a slim, athletic woman’ because really this is not the tape in my head! X

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/10/2025 14:29

I have bingo wings and saggy spaniels ears 😢

MagnoliaTreePetals · 29/10/2025 14:43

Ditto age wise @Fluffypiece . I celebrated my 58th a short while ago. I do take collegen and wonder if that is also helping. I lost 4 stone aged about 32 and my skin snapped back by comparison to now. However being 5 1/2 stone lighter is just so great, I dont really care about the wrinkles, crinkles and flappy bits.

One thing I love is when I am dashing about and suddenly get a glimpse of myself reflected in a window or mirror. It takes a second for me to realise that that slim person is actually me. She is Actually slim, not just less fat, but really truly slim! A while later the body dysmorphia might return, but I am hanging onto those glimpses of reality, and one day I will believe it all the time.

Yes they are but not all like spaniels and some man may not like 😉

I look ok in clothes but naked not so good

but yes prefer this than be 7s heavier as I look back at older pics of me and I was fat. I just didn’t see it 😢

I get access to the FT through my job and there is an article in there today about the race to launch a pill. Apparently Ely Lilly is hoping to file it's WL pill for approval later this year. Novo Norodisk is looking more like it will file next year. Astra Zeneca and Roche are also doing trials on WL pills. It isn't actually clear when any of them will be available for the consumer to actually take, but the implication is certainly within the next couple of years, if not next year.
