Buying Mounjaro from local independent chemists

Does anybody do this?
How does it work? Do you get a private prescription from a private gp and take it to a chemist?
If you are already taking mounjaro prescribed by an online provider would a local chemist accept order emails or current labelled box as proof enough to sell you mounjaro?

I get mine from a local independent pharmacist, yes. They prescribe it to me, in exactly the same way as the online pharmacies do except I have in-person appointments every month.

If you meet the prescribing criteria you won't need to prove anything because it will be obvious at the first appointment since they will both see you and weigh you. If you've been on MJ since you were obese and are now under the starting BMI requirement then yes you probably will need to show that you've been getting it prescribed elsewhere until now.

If you are looking for anything other then 2.5mg you will need to evidence previous prescription even if you are not under the starting BMI.

You make an appointment and have a face to face consultation. Obviously you are weighed. It’s the pharmacist who then prescribes for you.

Obviously if you’re already on Mounjaro you will need to show your current prescription.

Oh, yes, this is a good point. I've been with the same place since I started and so this didn't occur to me.

I know in the shitshow that followed the price rises, my pharmacy prioritised existing customers and allowed them to buy up to 3 pens at pre-Sept prices. But were also able to give single pens to any non-existing customers who came in urgent need due to online shortages. But they would have had to prove their prescription, of course.

How did you find these chemists?

My local one is Crest Pharmacy (small chain)

So I just clicked the WhatsApp button om their website - and have had both a personal reply and then a phone call.

Its their weight loss pharmacist who is not based in my country but they can deliver to my house/work or to my branch of the pharmacy. (So anyone could access them).

Genuinely was so impressed if anyone wants this. It was 261 for 10mg so about £20 more than the cheapest but free next day delivery, and a personal call each month if you want it. While on the call she talked about sulphur burps/what I was eating/interactions with elvanse and genuinely brilliant advise.

I may still go for an online pharmacy (just out of 8months with shemed) but genuinely incredible personal service and would recommend this to anyone (small chain but telephone and delivery so wouldn't nec fit the Ops brief of local pharmacy!)

I may not go with Crest yet as I may need cheapest but was so very impressed.

I even messaged a question about whether they are happy ordering 5weekly and once at normal bmi and got a quick response (and yes to both).

So this is my local pharmacy attached to my GP - but I wouldn't be weighed/consultation there it's a quick phone call if I want it once a month but I could pick up there if I wanted.

FoxRedPuppy · 03/09/2025 07:51

It is prescribed by the pharmacist. Some pharmacists are qualified to prescribe certain medications. Lots of the online ones are prescribed by pharmacists, some have doctors.

I knew of mine before since they're DH's chosen pharmacy for his NHS prescriptions and also they ran the big COVID vaccination centre here. When I was thinking about starting MJ I just looked at their website and saw they have a weight clinic so I booked an appointment. But otherwise I'd have googled local pharmacies and then checked out the website in the same way.
