Able to ride horses again

Thanks to Mounjaro, exercise and not over eating, I've been horse riding for the first time in years.

Went on a 2 hour hack with my daughter whilst on holiday. I'm going to ache tomorrow but it was worth it

What a wonderful non scale victory, @Nowthereistwo you must be thrilled!

Nunenco · 29/08/2025 17:47

Well done OP. That’s the main reason I’m trying to lose weight also and to be more healthy as well. We have a warm blood that can be a bit “funky” and my daughter doesn’t have enough time to ride her. Stone and a half to go ….

Good luck on your mission. "Luckily" we don't have time for a horse otherwise that would be a very expensive hobby

How lovely! This is one of my goals too ❤️

TheCaloricDecline · 29/08/2025 19:51

Congratulations! This also is one of my goal rewards, to get back on a horse and not fee like I may be doing damage to the poor thing!

GreenGodiva · 29/08/2025 20:05

I had a bypass 2 weeks ago and I’ve got riding lessons on my Christmas wish list. I had a pony as a kid and I’m SO excited at the idea of getting back on a horse. I’m currently 15 stone on the dot so 2st away.

Twodogsisbetterthanone · 29/08/2025 20:51

This is my reason for doing the jabs. I have a stone to go!
well done you!

Paperwhite13 · 30/08/2025 12:55

Yaaay. I love this.

speakingofart · 30/08/2025 14:47

This is my dream - I’ve never been on a horse in my life and always wanted to try! 25lbs down but so many more to go. Congrats OP

Smallsalt · 31/08/2025 09:34

Me too!
Halved my body weight to start riding again on daughter's pony.

Loving it but defo more scary than it was 30 years ago!

I’m looking forward to this too. Unfortunately my horse is now retired so I won’t be back on him, but I’m sure someone will lend me one when I’m slim:🤞

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 31/08/2025 16:49

I'd love to do this with my duaghter - it would be a fab target to hav

What sort of weight do you need to be?

And also what's the wright thats kind to the horses (ie if officially it's X stone, is unofficially it a bit better if you weigh less?

Thankyou.

It's up to the stables and the size/type of horses they have.

Typically I've heard 14 stone limit (fully dressed with boots and hat), although the stables I just went to had 16 stone limit as they had some shire and shire crosses.

But an unbalanced novice is going to feel 'heavier' to a horse than a balanced experienced rider.

In very definitely a novice. Pre weight gain I loved the odd 2hr trip you do on holiday and that's it.

So maybe if I look I to it when I'm 13stone naked? 12.5 stone?

Thankyou so much. Your post has really inspired me ❤️. I've been looking at "treats" along the way as I get smaller. (I've already been to a theme park and fitted 😊😊😊)

That’s a good target. A lot of riding schools have 12 or 13 stones as their limit. And they wouldn’t take into account whether you’re novice or not. 13 stones is 13 stones- a novice rider who sat heavily might feel heavier to a horse, but a more balanced, advanced rider is still going to weigh 13 stones. (I’m a riding instructor who hasn’t ridden for a few years because I was too heavy, and my horse is 17h with plenty of bone (ie, strong legs).

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 31/08/2025 19:42

@Gingercar That's really helpful thankyou. So maybe aim a bit lower so "13 stone with clothes/bootes etc on?)"

And if I was the school wouldn't be internally sighing or worried about the horse? Id happily email first to check. It's just if I set it as a goal I so don't want to get it wrong or hurt a horse.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 31/08/2025 19:43

And sorry OP wasn't meaning to derail - I just got caught up in your excitement!!! I am so excited for you. Mounjaro is absolutely amazing. Are you at goal. - are you going to stick with mounjaro? Keep horseriding?

Nellieinthebarn · 31/08/2025 19:46

That is amazing, it must be lovely to be back in the saddle looking at the view from between the ears! Brilliant, I am so happy for you. I have been too old, fat and broken to ride for years, I am shedding the fat, but sadly I will remain too old and broken. I am very envious.

13 stone should include all clothing and equipment.
However as a novice rider you will add to the weight due to lack of balance etc so the lower you can get the better
Just making the weight will restrict you to the number and type of horses you can ride too.

It depends on the size and weight of the horse.
10-15% of the horse's bodyweight is the best for welfare as you then have to add the weight of the tack ie saddle.
Being 13st will limit the type of horse you can ride.

Yes.
Most riding school websites will usually say their weight limit. Have a google.
This would be a good target/reward for you. I hope you get there.
