What do you wish you had known before starting Mounjaro?

I have an appointment with the pharmacist to begin Mounjaro on Tuesday and wondered if there was any way I could prepare my body before starting to lessen side effects. Does anyone have any advice on things they wish they had known before starting?
Going to be a long journey for me as I have 15 stone to lose

No nothing.
My daughter had started before me.. she gave me some pointers.. these are them.
Get ginger root capsules for sickness. ..( it's like morning sickness)... some get it some don't.. l only did for the first month.
Peppermint oil capsules for the burps.
Drink plenty of water.
Eat loads of protein.
I love fish/ chicken/ feta.
People exercise.. only thing l can do is swim.
Good luck.
It's honestly worth it.

Only that it would actually work!!

Tips:
Don’t have any expectations (particularly the rubbish you may read on social media!)
Don’t compare yourself to anyone else - we all respond differently and lose at different rates
Don’t expect to lose weight every week - staying the same and gains are all normal
Drink plenty
Focus your diet on protein and fibre
Be more active if at all possible - even if that simply means going upstairs to get something you wouldn't normally bother with or parking further away from the supermarket!
Check your diet first if you have side effects as most are caused by something/how much/when we are eating or drinking
Make sure you are eating enough

I’m 13months in and at goal 8 1/2 stone lighter than when I started. It has changed my life!

That in less than a year I'd be comfortably zipping up a size 10 dress after hiding away in baggy clothes and avoiding photos for over a decade.
That the injections are fine and I'd be a pro at them after about 4 weeks.
That the side effects would be pretty minimal and totally manageable.
That it was the best investment I'd ever make in my health and wellbeing.
It's been a life changing experience

random223 · 01/08/2025 17:34

That you don't have to increase the dose if you don't want to
To drink plenty of water
That you need to work out your TDEE and calorie deficit needed to lose weight

NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoBy · 01/08/2025 17:48

If you feel nauseous (likely), eat something even though you won’t feel hungry.

stay as low as you can in terms of dosage all the while you’re losing weight.

aim for 1lb a week if you want it to be sustainable and loss of fat not muscle

HollyhockDays · 01/08/2025 17:56

I’m about seven months in and I’ve lost four stone. I had minimal side effects never needed indigestion stuff or did any burping. My only issue was a bit of constipation but that’s now ok. Go for it!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/08/2025 17:56

How brilliant i would feel so i could start taking it sooner. No side effects for me apart from dry mouth for the first month.

Join a support thread on MN! I love being on June Jabbers.

That anecdotally you keep the weight off better if you stick at lower doses and taper down gradually.

That some people need to stay on a low dose for life and that’s ok.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/08/2025 18:07

That I’d checked the order properly and ordered MJ instead of Wegovy! Although I’m getting on well with that.

AirborneElephant · 01/08/2025 18:17

Don’t believe some of the rubbish on social media, expect a reasonable loss in line with your calorie deficit, not some kind of miracle (thinking of a 13lb loss in one week TikTok claim here!).

Otherwise if it’s relevant have a think how you will plan and organise your meals around the rest of the family, particularly since it’ll be a long journey so you need something sustainable. You can’t really do the skipping meals and then eating a big portion version of dieting. I’ve mainly been eating the same food but with fewer carbs / fat, but that works with my cooking but won’t work for everyone.

Lifecircle · 01/08/2025 18:28

Don't feel as if you have to tell anyone if you're not comfortable with it. Your body...your business.
Take your measurements prior to starting. Some weeks you may gain or stay the same but your body may change size. It's only a blip...keep plodding on.
Imagine a few months/a year maybe in the future and what clothes you may buy. For me I'm just waiting to get rid of my baggy tops.
I can only re-iterate what others have said and eat small and regular meals even if you don't feel like it.
Remind yourself what a good thing you've chosen to do to your health.
Good luck.

Don't panic about side effects. I had read so many horror stories but mine were pretty mild to start off with and certainly not debilitating.

Not everyone has mega weight losses and that's just fine.

Join the 10st plus group if that's your goal - a lot of people in the 'month' groups have a lot less to lose and if you're in it for the long haul you might want to expand your support network.

You don't need to consume a very low calorie diet to lose weight.

Good luck!

afaloren · 01/08/2025 18:46

That there is no rush to go up the doses if it is having the desired affect. You don’t have to.

On the other hand, that you may not see much loss on lower doses and that’s normal too even if people on here have lost a stone in their first week.

PearlsPearl · 02/08/2025 09:19

Constipation is my only side effect. Eat prunes, take fibre gummies, have the fybogel in, etc if it happens to you!

Use the Shotsy app, useful for tracking everything.

Take 'before' photos and measurements. You'll hate them at the time but be grateful for them later.

Get insulin syringes so you can use the 5th dose.

Order more needle tips (the ones that come with the pen) if you're planning on using smaller doses, I started on 1.25mg so needed them, and I'm going to take 3.75mg out of a 5 pen too.

Don't obsess over the scales. I gained 2 weeks but overall I've lost 2 stone in 10 weeks. I was so sad the first time I saw the gain but the following week it was gone.

Plan your jab day carefully. I take mine on Sunday night, because I want the most suppression during the week as I struggled on work days not to eat all the time and resist all the treats, and then on day 6/7 (Sat Sun) I can generally eat a lot more as the suppression wears off. This works well for me, so I can eat and enjoy going out etc on the weekends with my family.

Track your calories at first. I use Nutracheck and it's excellent. I tend to eat a lot of the same foods now so don't use it most days anymore. I eat around 1100-1200 calories a day now.

Watch your protein. I drink a clear protein drink made with powder from My Protein every day, they're great. Taste like squash. I also eat eggs sometimes, and lots of chicken (I like the pre cooked flavoured chicken you get, my current favourite is Tesco's greek gyros but I also like the sweet chill). And cottage cheese can be your friend too.

Drink water. I don't. Hence the constipation I think! I do drink the protein water in a 1l bottle though which is something.

How well it would work in my T2 diabetes…..that was primarily the reason the consultant put me on it and in 7 months my HBA1C has dropped from 93 to 51…. Shocked and happy , the 2 stone weight loss has been a fabulous bonus .Only side effect I have had ( now on 10mg) has been feeling sick the first and second week of starting a new dose ( only for a couple of days each time) but I already knew that Cyclizine tablets work a treat for me so just take one when I need it….xx
