Ketosis and bad taste in mouth?

I’ve been on MJ since May and i have lost almost two stones now by doing 1.25mg every 4 days.
weight loss is slowly stalling (no gain though) so i am thinking of increasing to 1.5mg soon.

For the past two weeks i have had this horrendous taste in my mouth though and no amount of teethbrushing make it go away. I feel the issue is not in my mouth though but perhaps in my stomach.
i have read somehwere that when on a low cal diet, we may enter ketosis and develop a bad taste in the mouth.

Any one has experienced this? How have you managed?
Although i dont count calories, i have enough suppression to feel confident i am eating a correct amount for weight loss. As my losses are diminishing, i dont want to eat more (to revert ketosis, if that is the problem). I also wonder if i do increase the dosage, i will probably eat a bit less and is it going to make the problem even worse?
i am in a people facing hob and cannot chew gum at work.
i have tried peppermint tea and gaviscon to no effect.
from memory i think bananas might make ketosis worse but i could be wrong…
DP and DCs have not said anything (tbey would if they had!) so i guess i am the one the most bothered by it.

any advice would be greatly appreciated x

Bananas will kick you out of ketosis - I used to get peppermint breath sprays for my handbag in ketosis and sugar free mint or cappuccino or butterscotch drops to suck (Lidl till displays) - not too many of those max 4 a day because laxative effect

@lefromagethank you - So bananas are ok? 👍 i will try immediately!
good idea for peppermint spray - i’ll get some.

i am also wondering if ketosis is also responsible for the slowing down of my losses? So should i up my calories instead of upping my MJ?

Who prescribed you these doses?

tostaky · 01/08/2025 11:43

@Bgasfraudfraud i split my 2.5mg dose - i started with 2.5mg but the nausea was so strong, i wasnt coping. 1.25mg suit me so much better

I would sort out your "ketosis" before increasing dose

If unsure if it is ketosis or other GI, get some ketosis testing strips to test urine

If ketosis, increase carbs (you might need to track calories/macros for a short time to get a baseline for a healthy diet)

Consider getting back to the correct 7 day dosing schedule before increasing dose

Could be B vitamin as well , had low B vitamin last year and had an odd taste in mouth/bad breath

ketosis normally gives a lot of warning signals like dizziness, nausea , headache , fatigue

as PP mentioned I wouldn’t jab every 4 days in the long run, I did for a couple of weeks on 5mg as dose wasn’t working as well and almost fainted daily . Increased my dose and increased to 7 days and problem resolved

MJ has a half time of 4-5 days and I feel I give my body a break for a day or two , you deffo feel the difference (even on low doses)

ensure to have carbs and drink a lot of water

Eat some carbs any carbs, need around 50-80g a day to stay out of ketosis.

I did have a horrible catarrh taste in my mouth about 3 weeks in (on 2.5mg). I definitely wasn't in ketosis as I was eating carbs, and I put it down to something the MJ was doing in my stomach. It went away on its own.

I think im not drinking as much water as usual so today i upped my water, ate loads of carbs (including. Pizza!), took some B vitamins, brushed my teeth a few times and used corsodyl and bought some ketone testers (in the post). All this and things seems to have improved! Not entirely gone but massively improved.

ive realised that as a vegetarian i focus too much on protein because i am worried i am not getting enough, and this is yo the detriment of carbs. So this may have been why…
