Alcohol and MJ

I don’t drink much alcohol anymore, only really on special occasions.
Last weekend I went to a friends party, had about 5 drinks and woke up with the worse hangover.
Last night I went to another friends party had about 4 drinks and again woke up with a terrible hangover.

Before starting MJ I used to drink a lot more than that on a night out and never feel this rough.
Has MJ made anybody else’s hangovers a lot worse after having a few drinks?

Yes! Definitely. But it also decreases my desire to drink so I find it fairly manageable. I also eat less when I’m hungover now I’m on MJ.

champagnedates · 27/07/2025 13:06

I’m not on mounjaro any more, but when I was it gave me the worst hangovers.

tryingtobesogood · 27/07/2025 13:08

I have terrible hangovers on MJ often before I go to bed! I couldn’t drink at all to begin with, now I can I have to be mindful of what I drink. Wine is not good but somehow expensive cocktails go down well 🤦‍♀️

pompydo · 27/07/2025 13:08

@Incognitoburrito88 yes it’s really decreased my desire to drink as well. That’s why I only had 4/5 small drinks and still feel rubbish

I’m going away on holiday in 10 days and I do like a few cocktails whilst there. I’m thinking of stopping the Mounjaro whilst away and carry on when I’m back. I don’t want to spoil my holiday by feeling like this. I know I could just not drink but I do enjoy a few drinks whilst away

That’s exactly what I did. No point going on holiday and not fully enjoying it. I was away for 2 weeks and only put on 2lb.

That’s really good. We’re going for 10 nights so I don’t mind if I put a few pounds on. I only have a few more pounds to lose then I’ve reached my target weight so I’m happy already

I’m on holiday right now and decided to only take half my dose this week. I still can barely drink, and I was a pretty big drinker. It’s weird. But good. It’s one of the main reasons I think I may try to stay on a very low dose long term once I reach goal weight. Like a PP I have found that wine is no longer enjoyable. I have swapped to spirits and mixers with lots of mixer. On the few occasions I’ve tried to push through it with wine at social events to act ‘normal’I’ve ended up stopping early and with raging acid reflux/being sick before bed.

sweetpickle2 · 27/07/2025 14:04

I definitely can't drink as much on MJ, and if I do I usually throw up that night (I have been drinking pretty regularly since I was old enough and have never been a drunk vomiter!). It hasn't made my hangovers worse, but I usually have to stop drinking before I usually would and switch to water so I'm not sick which is probably why.

Yes I can’t drink half as much as I used to. I can force myself to have 4 drinks when out to try and act “normal” but then like you I start to feel sick and I was never like that before. The hangovers off just a few drinks are unreal.

Im due my next dose on Thursday and we go away the Tuesday after so I’m thinking I may have my next dose on Wednesday then hopefully it will have worn off by the time I go away.

My hangovers are getting terrible after just a few drinks. Pear Juice is what helps me. Nashi pear juice i buy online and it has saved me many terrible mornings.

Nanda66 · 17/03/2026 18:09

It’s made no difference to me, I can drink the same as before.

WappityWabbit · 17/03/2026 18:57

I think if MJ can help some people get used to drinking far less alcohol, it can only be a good thing.

HeidiLite · 18/03/2026 08:14

I definitely drink a lot less, not really enjoying drinking that much. But I am not really complaining about it. Went out to dinner recently, had just a couple of glasses and while I wasn't drunk and didn't have a hangover, my watch and health app were screaming about how badly I slept and how low my energy was. Makes a difference.

Tammy214 · 18/03/2026 11:23

i was fine but slower until i got to 7.5, limit is very low and recently i cant stomach red wine, i do tend to take suppliments when i know am out for a few glasses, along with elctrolytes before and after the time out. I am hoping i can still have a few drinks without horrible hangovers, but i enjoy the limitation mostly

AsteriaBuffy · 18/03/2026 11:30

I haven't found that it puts me off drinking wine etc at all. Sometimes fizzy alcohol isn't that appealing, but it varies.

Hangovers not any worse than usual.

However re hangovers / getting easily drunk - bear in mind what you've eaten before and during. Drinking on an empty(ish) stomach is going to have a potentially much worse effect, and drinking with a small meal won't 'soak up' as much as with a big stodgy meal.

maz99 · 25/03/2026 03:07

I had 4 double G&Ts on Sunday and didn't have a hangover the following day.
But I also drank a lot of water during the day, which probably helped.

Wallywobbles · 25/03/2026 05:09

I’ve not drunk for a year now. It makes me feel grim. But it’s a known side effect.

Ladybyrd · 25/03/2026 05:42

What it did for me (and I don’t think I’m the only one) was delay getting tipsy for several hours (I’m convinced this is to do with the slowed metabolism and I would be concerned about being over the limit the next morning). One night I’d had too many but felt fine. Woke up in the middle of the night absolutely blotto. It was a pretty unpleasant experience to be honest. Ready to party hours after everyone’s gone home.

Wickedlittledancer · 25/03/2026 06:41

Yes at the beginning, but after several months it changed hugely.

i still don’t have a desire to drink a lot, and have an off switch, but i can drink say a full bottle of wine on a night out, likely a couple of times a month.

I seldom get hangovers now. My take is my liver and kidneys have recovered and regenerated.

hangovers as we get older are due to all the damage we’ve done over the years, and we know mounjaro reduces inflammation and thay allows cells to regenerate, giving either a reduction in ageing, stopping ageing, or reversing itin our internal organs,

so I can drink quite easily and don’t get hangovers really now, I’m on 5mg maintenance dose, I don’t drink at home now, I still don’t have any real desire for it, you know the old hard day at work let’s open the wine thing, I only drink when socialising, so every fortnight, sometimes weekly, and I’m totally fine the next day,

occassionally it crosses my mind to have a drink at home, but as I now understand the damage alcohol does to our bodies,it drives the desire not to drink even further, hence I keep it to nights out.

I can drink as much wine as I always have, no issues at all. However, I struggle with lager because I feel full after one, maybe two pints. That doesn’t feel like alcohol per se, but more the usual effect of Mounjaro in the feeling of fullness after eating or drinking anything.
