Is MJ impacting your mood?

I’ve been on MJ for three months and I’m so grateful for the gradual weight loss but recently, I’ve just been feeling so ‘flat’. At first I wondered if it was the loss of dopamine hit from looking forward to food and wine but I’m now feeling it a lot more. It’s not severe (I wouldn’t say I’m ‘depressed’) more just a feeling of ‘meh’.

I’m usually quite a positive person and can see the optimism/upside in most things but for the past month, it’s been a sort of dulled down feeling.

It’s certainly not bad enough to give up (I’m going to see this thing through!!) but I wondered if anyone else had experienced anything like this?

Yes!

Yes, anxiety is a side effect I believe? I felt similar as in just a bit 'down'. I stuck with it though and touch wood am all good again now. I assumed it's your body getting used to the medication

GiveMeWordGames · 27/07/2025 09:00

Anhedonia is definitely a potential side effect. I've had it periodically and then I'm suddenly ok again.

I'm wondering if it's being in a constant calorie deficit rather than mj? Think my body is getting a bit stroppy after 9 months!

ginislife · 27/07/2025 09:06

Until I read your thread this hadn’t occurred to me but yes, a definite feeling of “meh”. Not depressed but definitely a bit down. I’ve had a 2 week break from it and am feeling ok again now.

For me, I’ve never been a morning person so I usually wake up feeling ‘bleurgh’. But then once I get some breakfast and coffee in me, it’s like someone’s changed my batteries and I’m ready to start the day…but with MJ, this doesn’t seem to happen.

I did previously get a lot of ‘reward’ from cooking lovely meals and really looking forward to sitting down with a feast and now that food is more about ‘fuel’, I’m missing that. But yes, there’s a definite sense of ‘meh’.

I’m telling myself that ‘meh’ is a small price to pay for getting a healthy body.

Yes 100%. Its sort of dulled how I feel if that makes sense but it did pass.

It does disrupt the dopamine pathway. I've been on it almost 10 months now and on 15mg, the higher up I went the worse I felt, really exhausted, low mood, no enthusiasm or energy to do anything. I then looked into dopamine supplements and found L-tyrosine. Been on it 2 months and I'm genuinely a different person, happier, more energy, doing DIY jobs like painting my house and gardening, going out, cleaning and more productive at work. If you search on here, I've recommended it to many before and others have also tried and feel better. Look up the reviews on amazon, it's a shame I found out almost 8 months on my journey as I was a mess and my house and work was suffering.

@threeeggsontoast as I'm less hungry I find I have more time to cook so am really focused on creating healthy, simple meals with lots of flavour. I try about 3 new recipes a week. I get a couple of healthy recipe boxes to make this easy and use the recipes from the supermarket I get deliveries from as it lets you add to your basket from the ingredient list. I tried barramundi last week and it was lush!

Ugh this is tricky. I think I might have this too, but then it's also so nice not to have the despair about my eating and weight being out of control.

My problem is I'm 44 and in Peri I think, anxiety has started:got worse and sleep disturbances. Was thinking about starting HRT but it's hard to know what's peri and what could be MJ. I've been on it a year and will need to stay on.
