Increased gagging whilst on Mounjaro

Has anyone else experienced this? Currently on week 19 but noticed that I seem to be gagging more than normal. I have had very few side effects, but I do have sensory issues where certain textures or smells will make me gag, also very cockly but this seems to have increased since taking the medication. In the 19 weeks I’ve been on the injections I have been sick three times, but noticed I do gag a lot more. Is this just a side effect like nausea, but without actually being sick. I work in a hospital, clinical role, certain things I’m fine with but other things make me gag, so this is normal of me, it happened before starting the injections. I do believe I have GERD but still waiting on a diagnose, so it could be that l, which I had before taking the medication. Not a huge issue at all but just embarrassing when dealing with patients, don’t want to offend them so I wear I mask when dealing with anything clinical.

I think it may be GERD or something similar rather than the Mounjaro. Are you going to have an endoscopy so they can see what is going on?

I have oesophagitis and hiatus hernia and was gettjng food stuck painfully in my oesophagus from time to time, snd silent reflux Have to say with taking mounjaro it all seems to have gone away, I assume with eating less/more carefully.

I have this. I also had it when I was pregnant. Even thinking about certain things brings on my gag reflex. Public toilets are my absolute nemesis again!

I rarely gagged before mounjaro but now I struggle with swallowing tablets and occasionally gag when brushing teeth etc. I've noticed it's worse when I have higher suppression. It gets strong with smells too and I also work in a hospital and walking past the staff canteen kitchen makes me want to heave! I have to be proactive and breathe through my mouth often.

Still waiting on my referral from the doctor… so could be waiting a while.

So it’s not just me. Strange isn’t it.

Edited

Yes I noticed that too. I started my third week on 10mg on Thursday and today I was sick again… tbf being sick 4 times during my whole duration is nothing to really complain about. I did stay on 7.5mg for 8 weeks so I’m just wondering if that affected it. I need to brush up on my mouth breathing exercises then 🤣

So weird. I have never taken mounjaro / ozempic or the like. But I believe I have the body/ food system it’s trying to induce. I never have to ‘try’. It’s just never an issue with food.

I gag when I brush my teeth and also when I swallow tablets. Always have and it’s always bemused me how others can do these things no issue. I wonder whether others who naturally regulate weight are also gaggers 🤔

Even when I was skinny, size 6 I would gag. I didn’t have potential GERD then but it would happen.

Oh wow! Maybe there is something in that then. And as you put on weight the gagging disappeared?!

So weird. Maybe this is the secret behind these drugs after all. Pingiop has reverse invented mounjaro 😂

No the gagging pretty much stayed the same until around the time I got GERD, then it slowly increased and now I’m on MJ it’s increased further.

Yes, this is pretty much my only side effect now (just into second year and on 13.75 mg). Well I think yes - retching.

It isn't every day but...

Notable things that have recently made me retch (and not be able to control it for a while), without any smells or taste are:

  • Someone telling a story about smelling a fart
  • Being behind a lady in the supermarket who let out a loud fart (she didn't realise anyone else was in the aisle I think) - I immediately turned round and went up the next aisle, didn't smell anything at all but couldn't stop retching for quite a bit (thankfully supermarket was very quiet and no one else in aisle)
  • A gory scene in a movie - this one actually made me sick (possibly because I had a full stomach too). I've seen the scene before when not on MJ and didn't have this reaction

Retching brushing my teeth in the morning (that was also an issue when pregnant, and occasionally just brushing the molars without MJ/pg). Then more obvious things like horrible smells etc.

Mrbingleysbuttons · 28/06/2025 08:38

This has been my experience throughout mounjaro. No other side effects apart from this.

Have you had this for the entire two years? I’ve only just noticed I get it when I go up a dose. Not everyday like you but smells definitely affect it. I mean it’s pretty much the only side effect I really have but it’s just annoying with it being unpredictable.

Did it ever go away or reduce in frequency?

It’s fine 😄 I gathered you must have thought it was the opposite.

I’ve only been on MJ for a year - just entered my second year. I would say I’ve only become aware of it in the last few months, maybe because nothing triggered it before. It was the smelly fart story that made me realise as I wouldn’t have done that before.

I think in the early months the thought of some foods made me retch slightly but both to the extent it was with the three incidents I mentioned above. Food doesn’t triggger it now.

Blueyshift · 28/06/2025 19:24

Yes!!!! I posted about it on my June group. Been on it a year now and it does get better.

Anything could have me gagging or borking as we call it here. Hair is the worst if I saw a hair I couldn't stop or people posting pics of their hair that has come out on MJ. Literally had me gagging over and over. 6 months ago I wouldn't have been able to type this without gagging. Now I can.
