The smell 🤢

I work with someone who has started their weight loss injection journey and we are all trying to be supportive. They have a lot of weight to lose, in excess of 8 stones they said. The issue I have is the smell. It is week 3 or 4 now I believe, but they have noxious burps and farts which stink out our whole work zone. It’s extremely hard to even carry on working when it happens, as it’s so intense. Most colleagues simply have to leave the area and return, which can be fairly subtle in this weather but won’t be in winter! No one has mentioned it to each other or to them but I’ve noticed a pattern of us leaving the room/ opening windows etc as the smell spreads.

I was considering using a private prescription myself to lose approx 2 stones which I need to shift, but honestly I don’t think I want to be another stinky person in our work place. It’s not a big enough space to handle it!

Does it get less? Can I offer any subtle tips? Will I get it too if I use an injectable appetite suppressant?

Thanks for any tips!

Gross. Bring it up with HR. Also no adult should be burping or farting at work. They clearly had a personal hygiene issue already ....

26dX · 25/06/2025 22:16

Haha oh no! I’ve never had this issue! Must be something they’re eating to trigger it.

YouWillFindMeInTheGarden · 25/06/2025 22:18

Mounjaro doesn’t cause that! Assuming it’s mounjaro
doubt you will be prescribed it with just 2 stone to lose depends on BMI

not in my experience of it anyway.

FloppySarnie · 25/06/2025 22:21

Mounjaro can definitely cause sulphur burps. It’s the only side effect my friend has and she’s been like that for 6 months.

FurForksSake · 25/06/2025 22:21

MJ can cause sulphur burps. Use mint capsules or chew gum. Have a quiet word. I didn’t realise mine were mad till I twigged in a meeting that someone got up and opened a window.

ive lost five stone and have one to go, been on the same dose for several months now and no longer have any side effects. It does pass.

as mentioned a private provider will require bmi of 30 with video or photographic evidence to start.

SilenceInside · 25/06/2025 22:24

I’m sure they’re aware of it and don’t need you to be giving them tips about it. If it’s genuinely causing you an issue then follow your HR procedures and let any conversation about it happen through proper channels in an appropriate way.

If it’s Mounjaro they’re using, it slows digestive transit and can cause an excess of hydrogen sulfide gas to be produced. It depends on the individual though as to what foods trigger it, or if it happens at all.

It’s not something I’ve ever had whilst I’ve been taking Mounjaro. If you’re obese and need to lose weight for your health, then the possible risk of a mild side effect should not be something that stops you from considering using Mounjaro.

RentalWoesNotFun · 25/06/2025 22:24

People shouldn’t be farting in the workplace. They should go to the toilet or outside for that.Unless they are unwell amd Cant hold it in.

TheChosenTwo · 25/06/2025 22:29

Is this really just since they’ve been on WLI?
Only because I’ve had 3 sulphur burps in almost 8 months. 2 one morning about 5 minutes after waking and 1 another morning about the same time of day.
I’m not more farty either although I’m eating a lot more whole foods
Obviously everyone has varying side effects so I’m not doubting that it’s solely down to WLI but I’ve not really heard that it causes foul smelling burps and I’m shocked that other people (if not sat within 2 feet of them) can smell the burps.
Makes me wonder if they’ve always been quite excessively gassy?

mynamechangemyrules · 25/06/2025 22:45

Maybe they have always been quite gassy..?! I’ve only worked with them a few months. They don’t openly burp or fart, it’s quiet, it’s just they said about two weeks ago ‘sorry about that, I’ve had sulpher smelling burps since starting the weight loss injections’, so I suppose I’ve extrapolated from that and perhaps it’s not the drug but it is adding to a previous problem.

From the initial questions on a private prescription site, it says I’d get it (I’m not very tall!), so it’s reassuring to hear so many people have not experienced smelly side effects.

With my colleague, I have noticed their diet hasn’t changed at all, just the amount they eat, I was hoping I’d crave healthier things if I pay for it to support my weight loss, but they are still enjoys eg KFC or McD lunches but buying less now. I want to take it to help me reset my eating to be more varied and wholesome as I just grab and go at the moment.

Thanks for the advice.

Mounjaro made me stop farting completely, it was miraculous. I am not on it anymore and the side effect wasn’t permanent unfortunately

FurForksSake · 25/06/2025 22:53

I definitely eat healthier now, you do have to use it as a tool to reconnect with healthy and balanced ways and not expect miracles.

having said that I have had the odd takeaway, that’s normal. The kfc rice bowl I quite enjoyed!

SilenceInside · 25/06/2025 22:53

I would hazard a guess that their choice of food is possibly exacerbating the sulphur issue.

Of course what you do has nothing to do with this person and their diet choices. Many people find they naturally prefer healthier choices when taking Mounjaro, I know that’s been my experience.

SaturdayDream · 25/06/2025 23:34

Can’t they control them? Do they burp loudly or does the smell just hit everyone in the face?

I think it needs mentioned.

AmythestBangle · 26/06/2025 03:03

I've had no burping, and no increase in farting over normal, except when I have occasionally needed some Fybogel for constipation.

Why are you judging what they are eating? It’s none of your business is it.

pharmer · 26/06/2025 04:00

This is just another poster who doesn't want their fat friends thin!

Yup, thinly disguised as concern but judging their eating habits…

VashtaNerada · 26/06/2025 04:53

This is definitely an issue on Mounjaro. It’s probably burps rather than farts - they are absolutely evil. I’ve never been someone who burps but if I get an attack of it, it’s like it comes out of nowhere. Since I read advice about sugar free polos, I have one if I feel it’s starting and that seems to stop it from being completely noxious. How long has she been on it? Those sort of side effects should get better in time, mine certainly are. The first week was disgusting but now it’s rarely a problem. I really hope for everyone’s sake hers clear up soon!

persianfairyfloss · 26/06/2025 05:51

It's a known issue with WLI, It's the slowed digestion which is the issue, it doesn't have much to do with dietary intake unfortunately. Would be great if it were that easy to fix!

It passes for most people.

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 26/06/2025 07:30

I understand why pp are on the defensive as we get more than our fair share of goady nonsense on this board but in this case I'm afraid it very likely is the MJ. The slowed digestive transit means that food sits in the gut for longer, breaking down and releasing sulphurous gases which have to come out one way or the other.

OP, your colleague would notice a significant improvement if they took a probiotic with digestive enzymes but I don't think there's a sensitive way for you to suggest this. It depends how blunt you are willing to be.

Lafufufu · 26/06/2025 07:31

You can get this more with wegovy BUT YOU CAN CONTROL IT WAS DIET!

Flag to HR yu cant be working in that environment

SunshineDeLaSoul · 26/06/2025 09:57

I’ve not had this issue at all and work with lots of people on the jabs and they’ve not either that I’ve noticed. If I were you I’d go to HR. That seems bizarre that an entire office is effected and no one has said a word.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 26/06/2025 10:00

They just need to leave the office to let out wind, like any functioning adult, so tell em that.

It’s not normally a side effect to this degree.
