Double dose by error!

I have been on 2.5mg mounjaro for 8 weeks and I was bravely moving up to 5mg yesterday well I thought I was until I accidentally injected 10mg! Will I be okay? Long story cut short med express forgot to send me out needle heads with one so I was advised to use insulin needle but I got the dose wrong! (Night shift all week) no excuse really. I’m panicking so much so any advice will be welcomed

Are you sure you have injected that much really? All of the syringes I have are 1ml so at most I could only take 1.4 x the correct dose if I filled it all the way up.

If you really have, you may just get stronger side effects than usual and struggle with very slow gastric emptying/ fullness etc. Speak to your provider and explain what has happened and see what they say. Good luck!

WeAllHaveWings · 23/06/2025 09:01

Very surprised a provider would suggest a patient using syringes as it is off license, especially without giving very clear instructions. Huge black mark against med express and a very concerning one as this impacts patient safety.

What exactly did they instruct you to do? Why would they even expect a patient to have syringes available or know how to measure a dose?

How many ml did you inject?

SilenceInside · 23/06/2025 09:02

I suspect it wasn’t MedExpress that advised to use syringes, rather people on social media.

@Mammy7were they 1ml insulin syringes, and what amount marked on the syringe did you actually inject?

morbidcuriosity · 23/06/2025 09:03

How much did you take.. how many mls? And was this from a 2.5 pen? .

Confused how you managed to get 10mg?

feelingbleh · 23/06/2025 09:07

Have you got anything to test your blood sugars as this would be my biggest concern

Itscoldouthere · 23/06/2025 09:12

A standard dose from a syringe is 0.6ml so did you take 1.2ml?
I would be prepared for some gastric side effects and be very careful about what you eat over the next 4/5 days, the jump from 2.5 to 5 is the biggest jump anyway, as it’s doubling the dose, so if you have injected 10 it’s a massive jump up.

HotCrossBunplease · 23/06/2025 09:13

Yeah right

just read it again, and you are right it doesn't specifically say medexpress advised it.

Mammy7 · 23/06/2025 10:30

i took 1.2ml so 2x 0.6ml from insulin syringe, yes med express emailed me to buy insulin syringes as they said it will take a while to send out needle heads as they are experiencing high demand, I thought because I was doubling up from2.5 it would be 2 x 0.6ml which isn’t the case as one dose is 0.6ml whatever the volume

SilenceInside · 23/06/2025 10:34

@Mammy7 what strength pen did you extract from?

For future reference you can buy the pen needles from many different online pharmacies.

It is extremely stupid of MedExpress to suggest you use insulin syringes and extract the medication yourself, with no support or instructions on what to do and what not to do.

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 23/06/2025 10:37

Why on earth would MedExpress advise you to buy insulin syringes rather than needle heads?

If they actually did this then please report them to the regulator. This is shocking.

Mammy7 · 23/06/2025 10:51

from a 5mg pen

OP posts:
TheNinthLock · 23/06/2025 10:56

What's done is done, I hope you don't feel too many negative effects.

I am however astounded at MedExpress advice.
You could have walked into your local pharmacy and bought pen needles. They all stock them.

SilenceInside · 23/06/2025 10:58

Ok, so yes, 1.2ml from a 5mg pen would be 10mg. MedExpress need reporting for being so irresponsible as to suggest this. They could easily have told you to buy the appropriate pen needles from an online supplier, in the same way that you bought the insulin syringes. Madness.

Plus, when you extract using a syringe, it can damage the pen plunger mechanism and interfere with the proper use of the pen if you try to use it with a pen needle next time. You will probably have to use a syringe for each dose now.

I hope you don't have any side effects as a result of this. I'd try to eat really clean, regular small meals even if you don't feel much like eating, drink plenty of water and hope it doesn't impact you too much. You could use an app like Shotsy, DoseDiary or similar to plot your injections and see a graph of the estimated levels of medication in your system and when it will drop to a level that you've been used to.

doodleschnoodle · 23/06/2025 11:01

Totally crazy of MedExpress, why didn’t they just say to buy needle heads off Amazon or something? You can buy a box of 100 for next day delivery. Why would they tell you to buy insulin needles and not the needle heads for the actual pens? This seems very weird and absolutely needs to be reported and complained about. So dangerous.

2.5 to 10 is a massive jump. I really hope you don’t have any side effects but I would prepare for some gastric issues in next 48 hours. Going from 2.5-5 gave me the raging shits, I would have been very unwell going 2.5 to 10.

Mammy7 · 23/06/2025 11:53

When did your side effects come on I only feel a bit nauseous so far

OP posts:
WeAllHaveWings · 23/06/2025 17:18

I can't believe med express actually recommended this, did you perhaps misread their response and they meant pen needles? What exactly did they say?

BlazenWeights · 24/06/2025 09:06

You okay today mate?

Mammy7 · 24/06/2025 10:18

Just feel really fatigued and some nausea

VioletsHeart · 24/06/2025 10:50

Sending good vibes. You’re not the first person to make this mistake, nor will you be the last. Hope you make it unscathed through the week. You can use glp1plotter.com to see how long it will take the mega dose to leave your system. I’d suggest skipping a week and then taking just 5mg
Good luck!

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 24/06/2025 14:34

I'm glad you're not feeling too unwell @Mammy7 and I hope that continues for you.

If you are able to I would really appreciate if you could clarify exactly the advice that MedExpress gave you. I've made no secret that I'm not a fan of theirs but MN is absolutely plastered with adverts for them and if they're giving out actively dangerous advice then this is really not on.

TheBig50 · 24/06/2025 14:57

It's a good job they're being plastered all over the board with advertising then. I hope ask them anything thread is still open so that you can address medical negligence with them.

Personally I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. Advertising clearly goes to the highest bidder, being late on orders and having a recently banned from MN (at least) MLM scheme.

But what do I know from reading 100's of posts from the consumer?

Cantwaituntiltheyareover · 24/06/2025 20:47

@Mammy7
I used medexpress and they also missed my Needles out so I emailed them....is this the response you had because they are advising you to buy Needles, not syringes....
