How did you come up with your goal weight?

Hey everyone,

I'm struggling to know what to set as a goal weight or end date as it were. If you have one how did you come up with it?

Healthy BMI?, a certain clothes size? When you are happy?

Interesting to read your thought process!

I'm short so my healthy BMI is, to me, unachievable and I'm not sure if I want to be a size 10 as I'm happy with curves and worried I'd look too thin/gaunt so I'm struggling but want to come up with a figure so I have something to aim for as in a count down with x pounds to go.

31 lbs down so I'm happier than I've ever been as I've not been here for 25 yrs 🤣

My current goal is in the healthy weight range and is a weight that I have been, albeit very briefly, as an adult. I don’t know what clothes size that would make me and I am not really interested as it will be a size that means I can buy clothes from any shop. And clothes size vary so much between shops it’s essentially meaningless.

When I get to that weight, I will reassess how I feel. It’s at the higher end of healthy, so I’ll see if it makes sense to go lower when I get there. You can always have a second goal after achieving the first one. I think for me it will be about being healthy, fit and strong rather than a specific weight once I’m in the healthy range.

No need to set a final goal until you get to interim ones and know how you feel. I am short too (5’2) so never thought I would get to a healthy bmi!!

I have had numerous ‘goals’ on my way down - getting onto the bmi chart was a first one, then each number it went down, then getting under 15 stone was a biggie and then under 11, which was the lowest I ever remember being, made me cry! When I got to a healthy bmi, I still felt I had more to lose and was worried I was one good holiday away from being overweight again!

I now have a bmi of 22.1, am a size 8, still have a bit of belly fat but don’t want to drop any lower as reckon my face and upper body will start to look gaunt. I have a 7lb range I want to stay within as weight fluctuates so much!

My goal weight puts me at a BMI of 27/28. I need to be realistic - I’m tall, in my 40s and have lipoedema so I fear if I went lower than that I would look older, disproportionate in where my fat is sitting (lipoedema means I have more fat in my lower half) and overly thin on my top half. Last time I was that weight I looked lovely so that’s my goal 🙂

The initial goal I set was a BMI of 27.5, which meant losing 5 stone / 30% of my body weight. I've reached that this week.

Now that I've reached that, my next goal is to get my waist/ height ratio down to 0.55, which means losing another 5cm from my waist. I don't know exactly what weight or BMI that will equate to, I guess I'll find out if/when I get there.

I am miles off it, but I would love to be within a healthy BMI. I have never been even close to it before, in my entire life. I would like to go to the GP and have them say, ‘Well done, Ms BatteryBand, good work’ instead of telling me I need to lose weight and dismissing every medical issue I take to them as being because I am fat.

My goal is to be in the healthy BMI range

morbidcuriosity · 17/06/2025 05:42

I'm tall at 5 foot 10, am my original goal was a BMI of 25.. which I thought was so far away and probably not achievable.. but I got lower..
It's changed a few times, it was then 13 stone would be amazing , but now I'm 12 stone I'm thinking 11 and half is what I want..

But I bet you, if I get to 11 and half I will say to myself might as well go for 11 stone..

spoonbillstretford · 17/06/2025 05:50

BMI 24, plus 11st is a nice round number. May go for ten and a half. Will see how I feel when I get there.

Getting into the healthy BMI range is my only goal. I know what weight that equates to and it’s achievable. Dress size isn’t my concern.
