@Blondeshavemorefun @FurForksSake @NippyNinjaCrab and anyone else who uses pain relief. I haven't talked much about my chronic back pain but I have had since late 20's. Tried everything, including injections and was long term on Tramadol. That made me feel half dead. I was referred to an NHS pain clinic in my forties which really helped mentally and physically.
My pain is muscular and it's to do with a few things..it's where one of ribs is connected to spine. Twisting is the worst thing I can do even just ironing. I have a slightly twisted spine and a back injury years ago in my twenties from lifting something incorrectly added to the problem.
Then in my 40's I had some relief but it's always been on and off. It's really bad at the moment and I think it's making me want to eat for comfort.
Sitting is the worst and I do a lot of walking. Most days I control it with paracetamol but I have to take codeine on some days.
So I could really do with some advice on those drugs you have mentioned as I don't think I have tried any of them. My back is really bad today so will be taking codeine soon. I had thought i must go to the doctor's to review medication then I saw the discussion on here so would be really grateful for some advice. Many thanks

Longley farm is sooo nice!!

Yes it is.. I haven't had it in years. I must go and get some!

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/07/2025 20:56

back Pain is horrible probably mainly because if you’re standing it’s constant.

I am on Co-Codamol and naproxen and omeprazole and I also have a A tube of gel that I use on my knee and ankle and bum cheek.

I have been on this since my fall February 2022 so three years if I don’t take them when I get to see a consultant check up for my solicitor as going via court then I really noticed a difference so I know that the Co-Codamol and naproxen I’m definitely doing something

When I started on MJ the pain was definitely less and I’ve generally been fine so slight throbbing but far better than what it was it’s hurting to cut down and I definitely noticed it at 7.5. I’ve gone back to 10 for holiday and see how I feel but it’s my hips and my bum cheek but really really feel it

not so much my knee and ankle at the moment, but it’s more my hips which is ironic because this is why I lost the weight because I have arthritis in my hip and now a 6.5 s lighter yet I’m in pain again doesn’t really make sense.

Equally if I hadn’t started this and I haven’t lost 6 1/2 stone and the pain would be tremendous.

I said a monthly description that I get by my doctor I’m on the highest dose of naproxen which is 500 a.m. and p.m. so 1000 a day and I’m also on two tablets times four times a day of Co-Codamol. I have been decreasing that and sometimes only take 2×2 so four tablets rather than eight
but the day if raining or frosty in the winter then sometimes I take eight

occasionally I have taken 10 but that is rare and that is when it is seriously Aching but I honestly don’t think in the last 11 months I have done that and it’s gone for more 8 to 6 more regularly for a day 2×2 in the morning to around 2:30 normally before I walk and do the school run hope that helps &@Azuresky68

this is all done via text talk as I’m driving to work so I hope it makes weird sense cause sometimes words do not get what I meant to them to say

The gabapentin I take for sciatica and nerve pain in my hip, I don’t really know how much it helps.

have you tried a tens machine? For back pain they can be wonderful. I have various back problems and I know I need to build up my core and that decreases pain. I’ve found pain clinic wonderful in the past and if I can’t get on top of my pain I will ask to go back.

could you have facet joint injections? Definitely worth pushing for a referral for an mri and discussion with the right people, there is so much they can do, but only if ylu see the right people.

FurForksSake · 22/07/2025 21:13

Also, if it is muscular have you tried sports massage? I used to go to physio that offered proper deep tissue sports massage and it really helped.

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 22/07/2025 21:19

I've had a bad back forever. I take naproxen when it's bad, I used to take stronger, prescribed stuff but it spaces me out too much. I see a wonderful osteopath who keeps it all in check, but if I don't go often enough, I'm crippled for weeks or longer. It's utterly debilitating, but I've learnt to manage it to an extent.

Azuresky68 · 22/07/2025 23:03

Thanks everyone for the feedback. @Blondeshavemorefun co-codamol is something else I have taken in the past but it also knocks me out. Good to hear about everyone's experience. I have tried most things over the years including tens machine, acupuncture on NHS, osteopath, chiropractor, osteopath, massage, homeopath, pilates and yoga ..spent thousands I guess. Seems to me that drugs for pain relief is the best option plus physio exercises (which I fail to do )
Going get my doctor to review pain relief medication

Weepixie · 23/07/2025 02:28

I’ve had various parts of my body treated with protein rich plasma therapy and highly recommend it.

Ive used for the slipped discos at the top of my neck, the slipped disc at the bottom of my spine, the arthritis in both knees though I’ve now had one replaced. I don’t know if it’s relevant to the type of pain Blondie is in/the reason why she’s in pain but where I live it’s certainly used as a pain relief/symptom relief protocol.

Oh and I’ve also had it done to treat my bladder issue and just thd other day I thought to myself - jeezo, I need to go to the loo again, my injection my be needing repeated. So I think it did help me in that area even though I was surprised when it was offered to me as part of my treatment plan.

This is what AI has to say about in when I did a google search for a link to it.

https://www.google.com/search?q=protein+rich+plasma+treatment&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari

oh, and I also have an elbow treated with steroid injections for good old fashioned housewife’s elbow.

NippyNinjaCrab · 23/07/2025 08:52

Some days I would sell anything for relief from pain, after years of various pills I'm on the same regime as you @Blondeshavemorefun Naproxen 1000mg, co codamol and gel. I was addicted to Tramadol and was weaned off when I switched GP practices. Also was on Duloxetine and it was horrible, I was on that a few years and tapered off. Because my brain is stable (mostly) at the moment my GP won't give me anything else that could interact with my MH meds so I'm kinda stuck. For nerve pain I was prescribed Capsicum cream 😂 didn't help because the Neuropathy pain is on my scalp and face so slapping chilli cream on didn't appeal. I tried a little and won't do it again!
I'll never forget my experience with Pregablin, the carb craving was mental!! I could've broken into a Greggs and munched all the sausage rolls no bother.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/07/2025 09:47

Least we know it works @NippyNinjaCrab

i wonder if I’m addicted as take daily but doc hasn’t said to stop or cut down so …..

I’m so sorry so many of us struggle with pain. I’be started reading The Happiness Trap as it’s supposed to help with mental health around chronic illness.

e consult with the gp and I have a blood test for my liver and iron on Friday. Very straightforward.

MabelSpan · 23/07/2025 10:33

Another living with chronic pain. I have bulging discs in my lower spine which cause pretty much daily pain and sciatica when they really want to p*ss me off and a trapped or compressed nerve in my shoulder (over 30yrs and they still haven[t actually confirmed what it is.)
I take tramadol x2 most days, I try not to take them more than once a day but theyre prescibed up to x3 and recently I am taking 4 daily. I have to take cyclizine with them or I projectile vomit (which is nice) I also take 25mg amitriptyline x1 but up to x3 daily, again I have been taking 2 daily as for some reason my disc pain has got worse recently.
These also help with my shoulder so I tend to treat them as one.

I am really tired at the moment, waking up tired, not wanting to get up. Im not sure what all that is about. It could be the painkillers. Every now and then I stop them for a few days to see if the fog lifts, trouble it my peri-brain cant remember anything for long enough to be able to look back and say, oh yes, it was the painkillers or not!
I am pretty certain its not my diet, I eat 30 plants a week, a good varied diet, take a multi vit, B12, VitD, recently ran out of magnesium, but not convinced they made any difference.

I am finding it all a bit of a rubbishy slippery slope once you get to the wrong side of 50 and some!

If anyone can recommend other painkiller combos I would love to know as I am never too sure if tramadol is actually strong enough on the bad days.

Sorry, that ended up being a bit of a long winded ramble/moan 😫

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/07/2025 17:00

I don’t ever have a fog or knock me out with co codemal

So sorry to hear about people suffering from chronic pain. Thanks for sharing. Mine was bad today and I took paracetamol. I am going to see my doctor to review my pain relief. Walking usually helps. I struggled today but it was worth it.

I once spent two months in the Phillipines looking after a much loved family Nanny at the end of her life. She was so tiny her pain was controlled by Tramadol and I used to go to the pharmacy every few days to collect it. One day my taxi driver was an ex Filipino policeman and of course he asked why I was in the Phillipines. So I told him, he then added two and two together about the pharmacy, and from that day on he accompanied me on every visit as well as send one of his family members to guard the house I had for us.

Seemingly even just having the tramadol put us at great risk of being robbed at home because I could have been watched at the pharmacy. And then there was going to the shops with it in my bag to get what we needed before I went home!!!! 🤣🙈

I really hate to think of what could have happened by the time I was collecting Fentanyl patches if this lovely man hadn’t come into our lives.

NippyNinjaCrab · 23/07/2025 22:16

Fab pic @Azuresky68 where is that?
@MabelSpan i think Tramadol isn't effective after a while and can cause secondary pain (i think that's the correct terminology)
Maybe its the amies making you tired in the morning, if i remember correctly they did make me dopey the next day. If only there was something like an injection into the nerves to stop the pain! I have bulging and herniated discs same as you and I find when they start their shit nothing helps. My wee MIL was given lidocaine patches but they didn't do anything for me. Xxx

NippyNinjaCrab · 23/07/2025 22:20

Jesus @Weepixie that's scary! I have to admit that when I was being tapered off the trammies I was like a wee addict driving to the pharmacy to get the next prescription. The withdrawals were bad. Never again. I do take co codamol but if I don't take it I don't feel any symptoms of withdrawals. Maybe I would if I stopped completely. One of DH colleagues was addicted to Oxycodone xx

@Nippy. My step mum has an injection called a ‘nerve block’ to control pain. I don’t know how it works, or how they decide if it would help or not but
it’s made a huge difference to her life.

When I first went onto ami I lost 2 days!
They dont affect me like that anymore thank goodness. I think the instructions say to take them before bed due to drowsiness, what it should say is take them as early as possible as they will completely zonk you out the next day.
I am never sure how effective the tramadol is. It used to be good at relaxing my muscles, but it doesnt seem to do that anymore. I am also really weird with how I react to medications like tramadol, sometimes they have no effect other times they make me feel ill, but mostly they just keep me awake unless I take them daily and build it up in my system. Taking them as and when keeps me awake all night.
Have you considered surgery to help with your herniated discs? The pain can be so awful and so very exhausting.😣

Azuresky68 · 24/07/2025 10:48

@NippyNinjaCrab it's Lothersdale in North Yorkshire which is just an hours drive from my home in Leeds. So lucky to have nice countryside nearby.

Azuresky68 · 24/07/2025 10:55

Maybe i should just give in and take a couple of codeine at night to break the cycle of pain. I woke up today and a blessed relief not to be in pain.
Having a lazy morning. I am not losing weight at the moment but still under my top weight of 9 stone. My ideal was what I reached in June 8 stone 7 but today 8 stone 12. Last weigh in on Saturday I was 8 stone 10. Still worried about maintaining as I am still on 10 mg abd not feeling much suppression. I only took one dose of 12.5 abd it was too much at the time. Do you think we get used to a dose after a while?
