Side effects after a year

Hopefully someone can give some advice as I feel like Im going crazy. I started Mounjaro in April 2024 with a lot of weight to lose. slowly moved up the doses until about March 2025 when I got to 12.5mg. all was going well and Id had next to no side effects the entire time. a couple of bouts of eggy burps and some manageable constipation. Then 3 weeks ago (still on 12.5) I started experiencing some indigestion like symptoms. Thought not much of it and took some gaviscon. Then a week later had a horrendous bout of diahorra with agonising stomach pain so headed to a&e as was concerned re gallbladder or inflamed pancreas. After lots of blood tests they were both ruled out and the Dr put it down to gastrointeritis. Had a very sore tummy and achey back for days afterwards and decided to start to titrate down back to 10.mg. 5 days after being in a&e I went to see my GP as still felt unwell, discomfort when eating, under rib pain, back pain, gas pain etc etc. She ran the bloods again, again pancreas and gallbladder fine. She's certain that the symptoms Ive been experiencing are all mounjaro related. Since seeing her Ive continued with the diestive system aches, back ache, generally feeling tired and achey and wiped out. It's making me feel quite anxious and Ive had another bad bout of diahorra. I just find it really hard to believe that I can go 14 months with next to no side effects to all this now all because of the mounjaro? Is that possible after over a year? Ive not recently moved up doses, still eating things I know are safe and suit me. (thats when I can manage to eat atm) I've lost 9 stones on the medication but ideally have another 2.5 stones to lose. I'm waiting for a call back from my supplier to discuss options. Just can't believe GI symptoms can make anyone feel as bad as I do, and they can be caused by something Ive had no issues with for 14 months.

I assume as it builds in your system it's possible? Plus there is so much less of you now?

How did the GP rule out it being one of the many diarrhoea and vomiting viruses or bacteria rather than a sudden reaction to a medication you've been taking for an entire year with no ill effect?
There are loads of stomach bugs that cause the symptoms you describe, and some of them can linger for a long time if you don't get treatment.

I’m sorry to hear you have been feeling so unwell and it must be very frustrating to not really know why it’s happening.
I am now maintaining been on MJ for a year, in that time I have had two episodes of sickness, vomiting and terrible indigestion, first time I had been on 10mg for 3 pens and had been using for about 9 months, I dropped down to 7.5 then again on 3rd pen of 7.5, I had similar issues.
I’ve since dropped to 5 and plan to go to 2.5 in a few months.
I think it was my body telling me the drug was just too strong for me, maybe now I’ve lost the weight, I just need to have a much smaller amount?
I know lots of people maintain on the high doses but I really don’t want to be worrying about risking feeling so ill again.
As you mentioned the indigestion made me feel so unwell, the pain was terrible.
I hope you feel better soon.

She did blood tests and has referred me for a scan. I had to ask her if she'd do a stools sample to rule out bugs/bacterias etc but that's not come back yet. So tbh I don't feel things like that have been completely ruled out. Feel like me being on Mounjaro is an easy cop out for her.

I'm sorry you've experienced these symptoms. I'm shocked how awful they can make you feel when it's something most people will suffer with at some point. But based on your experience it appears a surge of side effects after a long period of time on the meds is completely possible. May I ask how long you had the indigestion symptoms for? Did they subside soon after reducing your dose? On another note, how are you finding maintenance on the lower doses after g etting up to 10mg? I spoke with my provider and have decided to take 2 weeks off to see if the digestive symptoms subside. At least that way I feel I'll know either way if it's the mounjaro causing the issues, and if they don't go I can return to my Dr.

@disneydieter both times I had sickness and diarrhoea for just one day but had indigestion, bubbly tummy for 3/4 days, I was careful if my food and took Pepto Bismal, which seemed to work well.
I’m feeling good on 5mg, eating well, exercising and currently no side effects, I have lost 2kg since I started maintaining, but I’m doing more exercise along with eating more.
I weigh myself every morning and try to stay within a kg or 2, maintenance doesn’t feel easy though and I do worry now having had such horrible side effects that they could happen again.
In the long run I hoping to drop right down, infact, I’m interested in the concept of microdosing for general health, although I don’t know of any providers who currently allow it, so I will have to see how I feel once I get down to 2.5mg.

I'd wait for the tests to come back. I had Campylobacter and it was like being in early labour and took a long time (about 6 months) to recover fully. I'm not sure how long it showed in my system for

toomanyducks · 27/06/2025 13:33

@disneydieter Did you find out what the issue was? I’m in a similar situation.
