Mounjaro and gum disease. What have you found?

I’ve been on it for just over a year. Menopausal now so it’s a slow old process for me and I’m not quite in the normal bmi zone yet but close. For over ten years now I’ve had periodontal disease that is ‘managed’ by 4 visits a year to hygienist and all the cleaning stuff that goes with it. It’s slowed things down but never fully stabilised.
Well, now it has. I’ve had three visits now where she has said how stable things are with my gums and so much better than usual.
Seeing as Mounjaro works on inflammation it makes sense doesn't it? Obviously I have lost a good amount of weight but I’ve only reduced portion sizes so no particular change of diet. I’m taking a fair few supplements because I’m grabbing this chance at health but nothing whacky. My only unusual change is a sweetener called xylitol that is supposedly good for people with gum disease that I take a few times a day.
What I’m asking basically, who else is finding a difference in their oral health since this journey? If it is, then it’s yet another reason that I might stay on this for the long term.

I have early signs of gum disease so will be interesting to see what they say at my next appt! I used to get mouth ulcers every few weeks and they've stopped since being on MJ!

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 15/05/2025 16:42

Good luck with the whole journey! I don’t remember them saying anything the first time I went but keep me updated if they do. I wonder if Elli Lily have noticed it?

Following. Interesting if true

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 16/05/2025 21:22

@CountryQueenIt would be yet another area that it might have an impact. I’ve had a quick google but haven’t found much connection but for mine to change so much at the same time as taking it and knowing that it helps inflammation. Possibly very interesting

I also have gum disease but I have noticed (and confirmed by the dentist last week) that it has mysteriously improved. In fact there’s no sign of active disease, he said. I was astounded and wondered if it was anything to do with Mounjaro. I’ve been taking it for 8 months now.

You have confirmed my suspicions OP. Smile

Interesting to read. I have a tooth that was root filled that continued to show infection below the root and I just kept taking antibiotics despite knowing it needs to come out. Since starting MJ I’ve not had any problems with it.

really hope I’ve not just jinxed myself for it to flare

doodleschnoodle · 16/05/2025 21:36

That’s interesting. Before I started MJ my general health was pretty shit, I felt tired and run down a lot, had some vitamin deficiencies, etc. My dentist asked if I was run down or had been unwell when she was looking in my mouth and said a dentist could tell a lot about general health from a mouth. Annoyingly she’s off on maternity leave so I can’t get an update! But I thought that was fascinating.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 16/05/2025 21:50

@carrotycrumbleyou are the first one that I’ve found that it has definitely happened to as well. Won’t it be a bit wild if we’ve noticed it before the general medical people release that info. Because as you probably are aware, there is never really anything much that helps once it really gets a hold in your mouth up until now.

Yep. I’ve got quite severe disease and hygienist says my gums are so much better! I’d stay on it forever for this reason alone. It’s got to be the de-inflammation factor!

SpiralSister · 17/05/2025 07:57

Well bugger me. I had noticed that my chronically inflamed wisdom tooth had been quiet for an unusually long time, but didn’t make the connection. It will be interesting to see what my dentist and hygienist have to say on my next visit..

Mysticmaiden · 17/05/2025 08:51

I was getting a tiny cyst on my gum line regularly before mj every few months or so and taking corsodyl before i could get time to see my dentist with working full time. Not had it since mounjaro at all.

DarkForces · 17/05/2025 08:54

That's really interesting. I wonder if it's the improved diet too? It's a miracle drug in my opinion!

PermanentTemporary · 17/05/2025 08:54

Oh my goodness. I had treatment for gum disease last year and am due a review soon - we'll see!

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 18/05/2025 19:33

See if you can update us anyone when you go back!

Well this is interesting.

I’ve struggled with gum disease for years, it takes a lot of effort to keep it even remotely under control, I usually see the hygienist every 3 months. Was shocked last week when he said see you in 6 months! Are you sure, I asked? Yep, it’s all looking fine, he replied.

If this is a side effect, I’ll happily take it!

Angie7654 · 18/05/2025 20:41

Last time I was at the dentist she said my teeth and gums were in good shape and asked me what I have been doing to improve things. (Normally every time I go I need something done). I have been doing nothing. There definitely seems to be a correlation to improvements with MJ

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 09/07/2025 20:04

Any updates on anyone’s recent visits? I’m intrigued to see if anyone is having similar experiences.

WalterHWhite · 09/07/2025 20:11

My gums are definitely better. I see the hygienist 3 times a year, use teepees and Blue M mouth wash - so I’m a tryer! Last week, no blood at all having my teeth cleaned. Definitely something to be said for Mounjaro and gums! Been on it since April.

Antihistamine62 · 09/07/2025 21:50

Unfortunately I had to get my tooth removed? It flared just last week. All other teeth fine and gums ok too x
