Injections and Slimming World?

I have been doing sw and not getting anywhere after initially losing 2.5 stones. Gained and lost the same few pounds in the last few years and am fed up so have signed up for mounjaro. I need to lose about 5 stones. I really appreciate the support from SW and the people in group. Should I keep going? Would following the type of eating they recommend be helpful?

I can't comment from personal experience, but my friend does SW and says a number of people in her group are on MJ, the only thing some of them said was that they were struggling to eat enough due to the suppression, so I don't see why not.

I think slimming clubs will need to be welcoming Mounjaro users with open arms - if they don't their business is going to shrink rapidly.

If you enjoy going and the support of the group then keep going. You need to think about prioritising protein and trying to eat protein with each meal/tracking your protein. This is to minimise muscle and hair loss. I have been to slimming world in the past but I can't remember if they prioritise protein.

Personally I think I would disclose my Mounjaro use so that people not using medical intervention don't wonder why they are failing to lose weight in the same way - but that is of course your private information and you might not want to tell anyone - it's up to you.

I am having a horrible time with SW. They hate I am on the injections even though I am a slow loser today for example did half pound off whilst other sw members did 2 pounds even, even though I think these slimming groups are the best place to be peddling the wl treatment. Just find it hurtful they don't mind telling you where to get on the health programme for 12 weeks free at the gym and will diss someone who does exercise every day of the week except put an appereance in strictly at the gym, because going to the gym means everything. Fed up of having leaders who hate vegetables, one even hated exercise themselves, the other claimed diabetes could be reversed in 6 weeks and no one needed any medication attitude.

I get grief despite a woman claiming she eats steak and salad oh every day and has lost like 6 and a half stone in under 6 months. Even there I find this awful culture of how can we lose weight in the quickest time.

I put in a can of the Pepsi strawberries and cream can and then a Beanies flavoured coffee jar instead of the usual manky fruit for the losers basket (both free of syns items!!!) and caught someone talking very demeaning about it.

Wish someone would come along and make an universal slimming club where people can be on a whole variety of ways and plans to lose weight.

Total cult with gipping frozen meals and all this nonsense of you can feel your boots with pasta, not in love with it at the moment. That said I did find one or two members know more about my gynae problem then the GP surgery put together.

@Mindovermatter45 I am sorry to hear that - it sounds really hard. I dont think I want to tell everyone about the injections because I think some people would be very judgmental and I dont need the grief. But it seems unfair not to tell people. I think there are a lot of things about the SW ethos which are a problem. But I am not confident about doing it on my own. I know I need to rethink my food - I dont want to do so much convenience diet stuff and am thinking of getting some protein drinks to help myself when I dont want to make food. I dont seem to have much appetite at all, even though I am only just starting. Thanks for the comments, I really appreciate them.

I am using WW along with mounjaro. The app has a WLI category and has helped me focus on being healthy, and active. It’s only online but groups are available. I find it really helpful.

I hate SW with a passion, the ethos, the focus on carbs, the hard sell, and as a pp said, the pressure to lose as much as possible as fast as possible. I agree about the unreliability of the leaders, some are shocking.

I also hate the language used, being bad when you haven’t lost weight, the word ‘syns’. It’s so negative

SandSeaPlease · 20/04/2025 13:52

I am considering using Noom alongside WL I. I just really like the app, and it may help me stay focused on health and calories. I did it a couple of years ago and found it very helpful. I lost a stone which is quite difficult for me to do. And I was never hungry.

(However, as soon as I went back to “normal “life and stress” etc that stone came straight back, so it was very difficult to maintain just by itself; perhaps combined with WL I might be able to achieve this long-term).

Hotflushesandchilblains · 20/04/2025 19:04

Thanks for the new posts. Yes, @tryingtobesogood - problem is where I live the WW leader is even worse than the SW one. I guess I will try to cut down carbs, stay away from the fraken food they push, but see if it helps me keep on track. I feel I should tell people in group to be honest. But I realized I really dont want to and dont think they will be kind about it. I dont know. It feels more difficult than it should be.

Don’t tell anyone, it’s none of their business. The only thing you have in common is you sit in the same church hall once a week.

Do what is right for you.

MagnoliaTreePetals · 22/04/2025 15:14

I do understand your conundrum about telling the SW group. However if someone put on weight due to a low thyroid; when they start medication to reverse this they would not be expected to share it with the group, even though they would lose weight more quickly due to the medication. Although you might have an initial 'whoosh' with WLI's, the average loss thereafter is 1.5-2lb which is what SW recommends as healthy. It's none of their business whatever medication you might be on. As we all know, WLI's are not a magic wand, we still have to make an effort to eat healthily to lose the weight as well as to exercise to prevent muscle loss, the same as anyone else who may or may not be on medication. I was in the same boat as you, lost a bit with SW then stalled despite my best efforts. I started on MJ and have really benefitted from using the 2 together. I have no intention of sharing any of my medical details with the group. As a PP said, focus on high protein and low carbs and you will do really well.

FatGirlLosing · 22/04/2025 16:55

My mum is a SW leader, and whilst we are close I haven’t told her (nor my sister) about MJ as she is so evangelical about SW she can’t fathom that anyone would need anything other than the SW plan. The fact she’s been on it for YEARS and her dieting for decades is likely why I need MJ is another story.

MooBaggage · 22/04/2025 17:06

Hi - having done SW lots of times in my adult life and am now on WLI, I think you might not want to keep going to SW once you start the injections. From my personal experience, I lost all desire to eat any carbs and am mainly eating protein and veg - and my desire to eat anything sugary has reduced to almost zero - so it's far easier to build new eating patterns and eat healthily. I'm 14 weeks in and have got a lovely routine for meals, with fruit smoothies, lots of chicken and fish and spinach!

If you like the group, keep going, but if you're looking for food advice, you might find you just don't want to keep going once you've got in the swing of things.

There are brilliant WLI groups on here too that offer support - if you've got 5 stone to lose, there's the one I'm on (specifically for if you want to lose that much), which is so brilliant - has lots of people on WLIs who have been on them for months/years and offer fantastic advice and support, so please feel free to come and say hello 😊

Hotflushesandchilblains · 22/04/2025 18:29

Oh thank you @MooBaggage - what is it called? I need to lose about 6 stone so am definitely in the right space.

Thanks @MagnoliaTreePetals that makes me feel better.

@FatGirlLosing , yes, I do find the plan to not be the healthiest - I used to like it back in the old days of WW when it was much more directive and felt really well on that. Now that the focus has shifted, I definitely struggle with good nutrition and the WLI have really made me think about my food in a different way.
