Mounjaro side effects

Pineapplecolada1 · 17/04/2025 07:25

I took my first mounjaro injection on Tuesday morning. A few hours later I started with diarrhoea and basically haven’t stopped yet!! I’m unable to leave the house. I’ve also been sick and had horrible eggy taste in my mouth. I’m following the advice and drinking lots of water.
My question is has anyone also suffered with these side effects and how long did they last? Will the same thing happen when I take the next injection?
I can’t imagine being able to carry on if this continues, especially as I’m back at work next week. As I am now I wouldn’t be able to go!

I've been taking mounjaro for about 4 months. No real side effects beyond tiredness and a bit of brain fog. Not had any diarrhea or nausea.

Diarrhea from the very first dose sounds unusual. It's only a small dose. Could you possibly have picked up a stomach bug?

You'd be best if asking Mumsnet to move this thread to the weight loss injections board because there will be people there who can offer you some good advice.

As PP says, there is a weight loss/injections area where you’ll get a lot more info, OP.

I’m 7 months in without anything other than tiredness but others do have worse.

is this on your starting dose of 2.5? Have you contacted your provider?

ExtraOnions · 17/04/2025 08:17

I’ve had eggs burps, nausea and occasional vomiting. Yes it calms down, it’s better on some days than others, I use Omeprazole, and trusty Rennies. I find some food makes it worse, so I avoid that. I also make sure I eat small amount regularly, rather than 1 big meal.

Ive been on it since November, and have learned to cope. It’s worth it (for me), as my weight was more detrimental to my health, than burps and nausea are.

Icepop79 · 17/04/2025 08:48

I’ve been on monujaro since August. I still occasionally get diarrhoea and sulphur burps - usually the first week after I’ve gone up a dose. I’ve been on the sane side for a few months so it has calmed down, although the sulphur burps do kick in about once a fortnight. I keep a pack of extra strong mints in my pocket at all times and avoid confined spaces with other people if I know it’s brewing..!

GRCP · 17/04/2025 09:15

I took my first dose on Tuesday night OP and I am the same - last night I had a very bad night full of wind, sulphur burps and diarrhoea. Back at work next week and concerned about continuing.

Zempy · 17/04/2025 09:17

If you report your OP you can get it moved to WLI board.

I haven’t had the runs despite three months on MJ.

Did you eat anything fatty or drink alcohol?

PaintDecisions · 17/04/2025 09:18

Assuming you've

A) bought this via a proper pharmacy who prescribed it for you
and
B) have started on the 2.5mg injections (and only taken one dose of it)... @

That's a pretty unusual response to the first jab and I'd speak to your prescriber.

I'm on lots of MJ forums and pages and can't think of many similar reports to this extent after the first injection.

If you've bought a knock off from a beautician, hairdresser, gym bro, off Facebook or similar, I'd be seeking urgent medical advice via 111.

laundryhamper · 17/04/2025 10:03

@Pineapplecolada1
Me too. Had bad attack following third dose of 2.5mg and just had another following 4th dose of 5mg. The recent one lasted 48 hours and made me feel really really ill - faint and my legs didn’t want to carry me. The support on the Juniper app just says “drink fluids and eat dry toast and bananas” but if this is going to be a regular thing then I am going to have to come off it.

EBoo80 · 17/04/2025 10:06

A few people in my ‘cohort’ on here quit for these reasons, and a few self-adjusted the dose down and moved up more slowly to 2.5 (but this is against pharmacy advice).

Did you try eating quite clean the day before your injection? For me it is fatty food that causes trouble, but TBH I have never had what you are describing and would not continue if I did.

Finallydoingit24 · 17/04/2025 11:50

It’s not really unusual - lots of people have these reactions on 2.5mg and some people end up hospitalised at that dose too. Not everyone tolerates it well and it doesnt help anyone to pretend that these things don’t happen and that it’s a coincidental tummy bug etc. OP, keep hydrated and hopefully it will pass soon.

Thank you for your message. I really needed some positivity! I am feeling a bit better tonight and have eaten a piece of dry toast. I really hope it settles down and that I can get on with my weight loss in a more pleasant way!!

Try some Imodium. Gaviscon or Pepto Bismol great for sulphur burps. Ginger lozenges, capsules and mint tea great for nausea. It will pass x

ellenpartridge · 17/04/2025 23:09

I had similar when I started and occasionally get similar when going up a dose. It tends to settle within a couple of days. I've been on mj for about 4 months now, lost loads and generally feel fine on it. Hope that helps.

Pineapplecolada1 · 17/04/2025 23:55

Thank you to everyone for your advice, it has really helped me. It’s good to know I’m not alone with these side effects

What did you eat in the 24 hours around taking it?

@Pineapplecolada1how are you feeling?
I had another bout of diarrhoea early hours of this morning - I’m managing it with Imodium but hoping it passes soon. My sulphur burps have gone thank goodness. Due my 2nd dose on Tuesday.

Sorry you’re still getting the runs. I’ve been fine since Friday. My next dose is also Tuesday. I’m a bit worried cos I’m back at work then. If I get the same side effect as before I’ll have to stop. Hopefully it won’t happen now my body is used to 2.5 ?? May only happen again if I go to 5???
Good luck for Tuesday, let me know how you get on 🤞

Hi OP. I took my first dose of 2.5 on Sunday, Monday I was fine not hungry but thought that was great. Tuesday morning the sulphur burps started. By Tuesday night I felt so unwell, diarrhoea stomach cramps. Feel so so ill. I’ve been off work since yesterday. I’m considering not taking anymore. I was wondering whether you continued and how the symptoms are now?

Pipperleen · 08/05/2025 17:46

Sorry to jump on your thread.
I took my first dose last night. Today, I have been violently sick 4 times throughout the day and my head is absolutely thumping. Trying to nibble things here and there and keep my water up as much as I can…
I absolutely won’t be able to handle this every week, I am sincerely hoping it calms down.

Hello, sorry to hear that you are feeling so ill. This is exactly how I felt after my first dose. I have now had all 4 doses. Side effects no where near as extreme as the first dose. I take jab Monday night, feel fine on Tuesday and then Wednesday night I feel sick and have sulphur burps., slight diarrhoea but use Imodium instants which work really well. By Thursday morning I’m fine. Stick at it, I’ve lost 15 pounds in 3.5 weeks!!! X

Sorry to hear you’re getting horrible side effects. My friend started Mounjaro the same time as me and she had a headache after the first dose. She tells me that she’s fine now. Hope yours settles down x
