Holiday in Morocco next week, on my second dose of 2.5. It could be a carb-y week. Tips please?

Hi everyone. As the title says, I’m off to Morocco next week for 7 days. It will be my second week on Mounjaro. I deliberately planned to be dozed up for the holiday, as I do not want to sabotage my weight loss efforts and didn’t want food noise to dominate or ruin my week. I want to enjoy myself without food being the main preoccupation.
I’m not mad on seafood (we’ll be by the coast) and I’ve read that chicken is to be avoided.
Any tips please? I had no idea I’d be on Mounjaro back when this was booked or may have had a destination rethink.
Thanks!

Never been, but Moroccan cooking has a lot of stews (lamb, beef or goat), tagines, soups, grilled meat and cooked vegetable dishes I think. I would avoid raw salad if the water is not to be trusted and it might have been washed in local water.

Lots of vegetables available.

Morocco has lots of vegetable dishes and a huge variety of meat like any Western country. You’ll be fine. I’d argue they serve fewer carbs than the UK most of the time.

I’ve been in Central America for January and SE Asia for March. DH orders a starter and a main.. I order a side plate and eat until I’m satiated. ( about 10 spoonfuls) ..
sw 95kg May 24
current weight 64kg
goal reached Nov 24 by following the monthly increase to 15mg then titrated down once goal reached… to a happy place of 6mg every 10 days for maintenance.

Are you doing all inclusive or will you be going to different restaurants? Morocco isn’t challenging food wise. Tagine would be fine - I haven’t heard anything about avoiding chicken - would think it would be good as high protein low carb. Salads in touristy areas will be fine - food standards in the areas I’ve visited (near Agadir and marrakech) have been similar to European restaurants. Supermarkets have a good selection (we went self catering in feb and easily fed four picky kids). If AI then it’s super easy to eat all the salady stuff but I don’t think you’ll struggle at all.

No, not going all-inclusive. That would be too much of a struggle for me, though it would be an interesting test of how much my food noise has quietened!

Avoiding chicken?

TheNorthernTights · 09/04/2025 21:49

I went to morroco last September, about 3 weeks after starting on Mounjaro.
I jabbed the day we went & then when we got home (went for 10 days)
We stayed in a Riad in the medina (in Essaouria) that provided breakfast - that was v carb heavy - massive glass of fresh orange juice, bread & jam, pastry, boiled egg. Had that every day then generally no lunch, then dinner - fish, tagine etc, mostly low carb-ish.

walked lots, chilled lots, weighed a couple of days after getting home, lost 4 lb.

Not sure if that’s any help at all, but have a great time!

@TheNorthernTights
Super helpful, thanks! We’re going to Essaouira too, and the riad provides breakfast. Wonder if it’s the same one 😁

We stayed at Al Khansah (possibly spelled wrong!)

I can totally recommend the Explore Essaouria website & download book.

loved it & would go back tomorrow, 2.5 stone lighter this time, whoop!

As it's only your second week on the medication it might be worth telling you that the few times that I have had to dash to the loo have been when I have overeaten. When I knew I was full but pushed through! So watch out for that if you are enjoying delicious food it really is best to stop when you feel full else you might upset your tummy.

One other time I upset my stomach I ate a curry that was oily (the kind of chicken tikka ready meal where you can see the oil and have to stir it in) so I would avoid anything too oily.

Have a fantastic holiday!

Thanks for your comments! I wish I felt as positively about the place. But in all of my 50 years, I think this is the only holiday where I’m looking forward to going home 🤣 I could cry but it’s just not for me.

Thank you so much!
I’m hopeful that I may even lose weight here. Truly a first!
