Advice please - second time on MJ

So, I lost 18 lbs on MJ but came off it early due to cost and thinking I could go it alone. Poor timing and planning with loads of events and stress and I’ve gained 7 lbs back.

I’ve gone back on it starting at 2.5 mg obviously but no suppression whereas the first time round 2.5 was amazing for me!

anyone had any experience of this? I’m gutted as I’ve not lost anything in these 4 weeks whereas last time I lost 8 lbs!

I know it’s different this time as I’m not obese but still.

to add - I was only on it 4 months the first time when I lost 18 lbs

Anyone? X

This is my experience of dieting through my life. Low calorie works great the first time, get less effective on repeated goes. Low carb, same story - shifts a stone in a month and feels like a miracle but the weight goes back on and the same tricks work less and less every time until you end up in the trap of eating in a very restricted way just to stay the same. Bodies adapt and they experience diets as a food shortage or famine situation, and they want to protect you if that ever arises again so that you can survive.

The advantage of Mounjaro is you can increase the dose. So your body might resist another bout of weight loss right now, it wants to gain back some of its energy storage in case you hit another famine and it wants to hang on to it! Keep going through the doses on the prescribed schedule and it should work again. But every round of weight loss is always slower and tougher the more times we do it.

Thank you @HearYouKnockingsame, and my willpower gets increasingly worse especially now I have children. I’m massively impacted by hormones and binge eating (ADHD) so this gets harder also

I'm very similar! I am on MJ for the long haul and it's slow going for me but it does work.

Zempy · 05/04/2025 11:32

How long were you off it?

Hopefully you will get increased suppression at a higher dose.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 05/04/2025 11:35

I know it’s different this time as I’m not obese but still.

What do you weigh now OP?

I've found that the loss has really slowed down, but it is still working.

GoodEnoughParents · 05/04/2025 11:38

I’m 5ft4 and 11s3 - goal is 10 stone max ideally 9s10

GoodEnoughParents · 05/04/2025 11:42

So I know it’ll have slowed due to this and also the fact I’ve been on it before. @Zempyi was off it for a month or so

Zempy · 05/04/2025 11:43

OK, so you really weren’t off for long at all.

I am same stats as you. I am on 7.5mg and losing 2 pounds a week.

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 05/04/2025 13:08

It is quite commonly reported that the lower doses don’t have the same impact the second time around as your body is used to the peptides. Keep the faith and move up and you’ll find your dose👍

Oblomov25 · 05/04/2025 13:12

I agree with HearYou that every time it's harder.

That's my goal, too.
We're about the same height.

But I started at over 20st. I've lost nearly 7st now, so I'm currently 13st 3lb.

Keep at it, OP. You'll get there, especially as you haven't been off it for long.

Also, do bear in mind that a lot of us are thinking of staying on MJ forever. I think it's unrealistic to imagine that we're going to be able to control our food intake without help, after years of not being able to.

I'm definitely going to stay on a maintenance dose.

I hadn’t heard this , that’s reassuring to know as I was starting to panic

Did any of the changes you made first time around stick?

GoodEnoughParents · 05/04/2025 17:02

@unsyncso essentially my difficulty is the symptoms impacted by my ADHD. I’m great for 2 weeks or so and can manage everything, great diet, great exercise…and then pre menstrual hits and my whole personality changes. I’ve been tracking for years and cross referencing things like mood/impulsive buying/depressive symptoms …I have yet to find something that sticks for that. I tried adhd medication but the side effects were awful although it did the job re binge eating. I maybe need to treat this as if I have BED and find strategies for that, as I know they can be co occurring with ADHD

unsync · 05/04/2025 17:07

@GoodEnoughParents That sounds like a good plan as it might help in other areas too.

Zempy · 05/04/2025 17:07

@unsync I think many of us who take Mounjaro will be on it for life.

I sure as hell couldn’t maintain a healthy body weight without it. I have tried that for over forty years without success 😂

As Einstein said, “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”.

Agreed ! Although I plan on having another child so I’ll have to come off for a couple of years most likely due to TTC and breastfeeding

@Zempy I'm not wholly convinced by this. There are so many factors involved, biochemical, mental etc and of course every body is different.

It may well be the case for the yo-yoers. I wonder whether a very gradual weight loss for those who were obese for many years has a different effect. It would be interesting to find out if any research has been done.

I know that whilst I am still getting food noise on 15 mg, I'm learning to deal with it and make better choices. This gives me hope that by the time I can titrate down, I'll be able to cope more robustly. I still have another 20 kg having already lost 33 kg.

DollyPop100 · 05/04/2025 23:37

Yes this has happened to me, I lost well and consistently from Sept to Dec but stopped Jan Feb. I restarted March 2.5 now on 3.75 and have only lost 2 pounds this has taken 5 weeks. Defo not got suppression as strong but has helped with food noise. Only half stone left to lose so that could be why too. Going to increase to 5 next week and started determined to be stricter with cal counting until get to goal weight and healthy BMI 🥳

GoodEnoughParents · 06/04/2025 19:47

@DollyPop100same, except I’ve lost nothing in 4 weeks and ideally I could lose 14-18 lbs more. I’m really going to have to get myself together. I’ll go up to 3.75 or 5mg this coming week and then I’m going to stay on until I’ve lost what I need to. Wish I hadn’t stopped.
Ive got some food noise suppression but minimal slowed digestion which was really helpful last time. I’m hoping as I titrate back up that I’ll see some change.

Ive got a wedding in 2.5 weeks and really need to lose 5 lbs to feel good in my outfit.

Saw your comment re PMT etc and me too before MJ I could do ok re food exercise etc then hormones hit and was like a different person. Hormones have a lot to answer for ! Think why MJ helps as think helps with the hormones ?
if you keep going you might need to go up but hopefully you will lose the last bit. I reckon as the dose builds up in body that helps too.
I have noticed some talking about lots of water so I am going to try that too.
Good luck x
