Fatty liver/liver issues

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 02/04/2025 08:52

I'm being referred for yet more blood tests and an ultrasound.

So far I'm assuming this is fatty liver due to morbid obesity but it looked like they're testing for all the things (which is reassuring in itself). I also have lots of results around low iron/wrong iron.

I'm not sure why I'm posting. I go for the ultrasound/blood tests in 2 months so wont find out anything yet. I am worried I've broken myself. I've had fatigue fro a long time (why I first went to the Dr months and months ago) and everything takes so long.

MJ wise I've lost 2 stone already! But 9 stone to go to be healthy, which I wont lose in 2 months...

I'm actually worried they'll want me to come off MJ for some reason. It's the only thing that's ever worked and is helping me to eat so much healthier and the reduced inflammation is meaning I can walk more.

I think I'm doing the right things (already reduced upf, don't drink alcohol, reduced caffeine, losing weight, walking a bit more.). I guess I'd really wanted her second set of tests to show an improvement after all that rather than be worse 😔.

I think you have every chance of your next set of bloods showing an improvement, as you said you are already doing all the right things and will have another 2 months for that to embed further. You may well have lost another stone or more by that point too. I'd be really surprised if team reviewing your tests would want you to stop the Mounjaro, there have been studies that show that it is beneficial for people with fatty liver disease.

But I get that it is a long time to wait for the bloods and the scan, which gives you the time to worry about it! You are doing everything that you can do, and every week on Mounjaro between now and then will be helping to improve your health.

WeAllHaveWings · 02/04/2025 10:29

I remember someone posting somewhere about their liver enzymes were elevated - rapid weightloss can cause this. If I recall correctly their Dr was not too concerned because it is common on Mounjaro and they were not rising rapidly and staying on Mounjaro would have benefits of reducing fat in the liver.

You would need to have regular tests to make sure your levels did not rise further and to assess your liver health. Make sure you stick to a liver friendly diet as you have already indicated you are doing - low sugar, low UPF, lean proteins, fiber, and perhaps look into / discuss with Dr what would be consider a safe rate of weight loss so your liver is not over stressed processing the fat loss.

Go to your appointment prepared with information incase the Dr is not as knowledgeable about Mounjaro as they should be so you can advocate for yourself if they have a knee jerk reaction to stop MJ and you can explain why it might not be in your best interests as it will benefit your liver.

I had some pains and feeling of being unwell last year. I had all the bloods done and an ultrasound and was diagnosed with a fatty liver. At the time I was 20 stone with a BMI of 48. They advised that they wouldn't be able to see much on the ultrasound as there was just too much of me in the way.

I advised my prescriber of my hypertension and NAFLD when I ordered my first pen in January and it was prescribed without an issue.

I had my annual bloods and medication review recently and everything is looking much better. My doctor was very pleased with my results on MJ and I'm heading in the right direction to lower my blood pressure medication and eventually come off it.

In 2 months you'll be lighter still and your body would have has more time to start healing its self.

You've got this!

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 02/04/2025 13:06

Thanks @SilenceInside and @CanIGoHomeNowPlease .

I'm just under 20stone now so they'll have a similar problem with the ultrasound then 🙄.

I had my Dr's app today which was just a phonecall and brief to tell me about the 2nd lot of blood tests results and that they'd be repeated a third time with some extras in 2 months.

I'm really sad the second lot didn't show an improvement after being on MJ but hopefully the next lot will.

I didn't know about weightloss in itself stressing the body (makes sense though). I guess we will see in a few months (plus then another month to speak to a doctor...)

I'm losing on average around 1kg a week or just over so although I'm pleased I don't think I'm one of those who lost a stone in a week or any of those with more drastic losses so I don't think I'm worried I'm losing tokfast.

My actual blood test results were all over the place, and the inflammation one. She wasn't worried about any of it just wanted another test in 2 months/said likely fatty liver but id really like them all to be okay!

I think you're doing absolutely fine and your body will have lost more weight and you'll have been eating better for another 2 months so you'll be in a much better place.

I'm now down 38lbs and my bloods were much better - this time.

This will give you an extra thing to work towards!

2 months doesn’t seem very long. If it were me I would ask to change the next round of tests to 3 - 4 months.

Seaitoverthere · 02/04/2025 17:02

I have Fatty liver disease and am taking Mounjaro. Just been to Rheumatology and I’m going to be having another liver ultrasound soon to see if I can take a new medication so I am hoping to see a significant improvement over last scan which was end of 2022 as I have lost a fair bit of weight by then.

As someone has said above there is research going on with Mounjaro on fatty liver disease.

pearbottomjeans · 02/04/2025 17:04

Same here - liver started hurting in pregnancy with DD, who is now 3. I’ve had ‘raised liver enzymes’ ever since and multiple ultrasounds showing fatty liver but no one seems particularly concerned.

It will be 3 months from the last set of tests (took a month for the Dr to be able to phone me....)

Thanks everyone. Google seems to think most morbidly obese peole have nafld. I'm a bit concerned it's affecting other levels I my blood and not sure why my iron isn't right but it will be about a year before eim remotely normal weight so I guess it will be a long haul to deal with it.

There's no way I could do this without mounjaro. They really should prescribe it...

So I have my results from the Shemed blood test.

I'm a bit concered my ALT is going up each time I have a blood test. I want it to go down!

Also it's my first ggt reading (another booked thru gp in 2 months) but chatgpt (I know!) says all consistent with fatty liver.

I've got to book my ultrasound Monday. I feel a bit worried incase it is anything more sinister. And slightly worried about effects of elvanse and MJ on my body (you hear of the odd example of blood clots etc)

I'm also a bit worried they won't get a good view on the ultrasound as I'm nearly 20 stone... Or they might want to do a biopsy.

I wish it wasn't such a long term thing (won't be not obese until Jan at least) but also so so so relieved this is all happening while I'm on MJ. Google suggests MJ is an ideal treatment for fatty liver disease.

In October i had liver inflammation was told i have NAFLD i had my bloods done again this week and they are normal so i definitely think mine was being caused by Weight. I hope it improves for you

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 05/04/2025 16:57

Oooh that's fantastic news. Well done!!

I'm guessing it will be a good while before mine improve as I've a lot to lose.

I'm a bit wary the liver ones are going up rather than down though 😬.

My hba1c and cholesterol ones are improving though!

FWIW, I was just diagnosed with NAFLD and an ultrasound also showed gallstones. They are still happy to give me Mounjaro (am diabetic so can get it on NHS) but they plan to monitor my liver more regularly in case it causes any issues. Hopefully, my liver will actually improve, but I think rapid weight loss can sometimes trigger problems.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 07/04/2025 22:57

Eeek the weight loss can make it worse??? I don't have a gallbladder so I hope they aren't unhappy with me being on MJ.

I am v morbidly obese so nafld is likely I think 😳.
