MJ bonus dose question

SaveMeNow2024 · 28/03/2025 22:32

Hi - I've been here before, always managed to get the bonus dose from my pen but never experienced this before.
So I did the hard twist and only wanted to take half of the bonus dose so I stopped about half way through. Then tried to inject. Managed to inject about half of what was dosed, but then couldn't physically push the thing any further.
Took it out, changed needle, twisted again a little bit, and tried again, but nothing. Couldn't get the pen to go down to 0.
Is this a known thing? Have the pens changed? I'm confused, please help! there is still a lot in my pen and I don't want to lose it. I bought extra needles (just the standard push and click type that come with the pens) and don't want to buy the other insulin ones as it's hassle, and I'm a bit scared of them! thanks x

When you break the pen mechanism with a hard twist, sometimes the mechanism breaks. That’s always a possibility when you’re forcing the mechanism with a hard twist. The only way to use the remaining liquid is with syringes.

Hard twist worked with my first 5 pens, last 3 haven't - dose knob goes loose, or it won't dispense, so I've given up and I'm using syringes instead, I didn't like it at first but now I've done it 3 times it is much easier.

The new pens are apparently snapping when you try hard twist. Better stock up on syringes as it tends to be hit and miss.

thanks all - so where do I get the syringes from, and how easy is it to inject please?

i got these. You can get cheaper ones from amazon but not sterile?

Its really easy but there is a knack to getting it out. Injection is identical to the pen. This is a very detailed account but it is simple.

swab the seal
Remove caps from syringe
insert syring to red seal
ideally hold the pen above the syringe and slowly draw the liquid
I found this tricky so I lay mine in a flat surfaces - slow is key
keep checking for trapped air
0.6 is a full dose of any strength
hold it up with needle up and get rid of air bubble
inject!

thanks everyone. I've bought the needle to extract the extra dose. Hard twist worked but couldn't inject so didn't want to lose the extra dose!

I thought that "Hack the pen" video was a piss take at first. I think the video is risky and potentially harmful and I could not, in good conscious, recommend it to anyone!

There is no way to measure how much medication you are getting using that hack and with people reporting anything from 0.6ml to 0.9ml being extracted when using a syringe it could be significant increase of dosage especially at higher pen strengths.

Great for stepping up a dose and only marginally better than the majority buying needles from Amazon. In reality neither should be done but the question was asked and I answered.

Just to add, insulin needles need to go in on an angle rather than straight like the pens. This stops fluid from leaking back out, which is what happened first time I used one.

Guidance from Eli Lilly in link, relevant whether a pen needle or a syringe. Leaking is no more likely to happen with a syringe than a pen needle if you push the plunger slowly and leave for 10 sec before removing.

Injecting under the skin

Anyone ever had this problem with a pen. I was about to take my third dose from the pen this morning but it was like it just wouldn't plunge. On taking off the needle to check, the orange bung had bulged out. Pharmacy ( Asda) where I pick it up from won't take any responsibility and say i need to contact the company. Tried again but the drug just leaked out of the bung around the needle onto my skin. So no dose today, ( and no idea whether I received any of the drug ) no idea how long to get a replacement syringe and have potentially wasted £80 worth of drug. fed up !

Cornishbelle · 30/03/2025 21:37

My first pen i snapped the plunger part off completely in the end trying to do the hard twist. I ended up very carefully using a chopstick to push the plunger inside the resulting "tube" if you like, to get the rest to come out whilst the needle was in my skin! Probably not my finest hour but it did work!
