Constipation (sorry)

I had no side effects for the first 8 weeks on MJ. My normal routine, from long before going on MJ, is to take psyllium husk tablets every morning, and I was always fine. Now have suddenly developed really bad constipation. I have upped the psyllium, and started taking regular fibogel. No effect. Tried prune juice and not only did it not help, it caused terrible gassiness. What are people doing about this if they get it?

Dates, lots of fruit & water too.

AmythestBangle · 23/03/2025 23:23

OK, thanks, will try dates tomorrow (don't like them but will consider them medicinal!). I am not much of a fruit eater, which is why I have been a regular psyllium user for years.

A couple of kiwis. Yes, the whole thing. Even the hairy ballsack skins Grin

AmythestBangle · 23/03/2025 23:30

Eek, I hate kiwis! But ok, I will give them a go!

I had this badly for the first month but at 5mg it seems fine. I’m eating a handful of dried apricots each day, not sure if that might be helping.

DarkForces · 23/03/2025 23:45

Senna (or other medication) tablets to sort out the issue then 5 prunes (real ones not juice) daily to keep it at bay. Sometimes with weetabix or similar. This has sorted it out for me.

healthybychristmas · 24/03/2025 02:08

I had this so badly a couple of times but for the last few months it's been fine. I got laxatives and stool softeners in the supermarket and only needed to take one before I was ok. It was terrible at the time so I do feel for you.

Psyllium morning and evening works here, but not just morning.

What carbs are you eating? If your fibre levels are good make sure they aren't too high and add something with resistant starch that helps the food keep moving through your digestion. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/9-foods-high-in-resistant-starch

Stick a tbsp of chia seeds into a smoothie every morning. No need to soak. Just make sure you drink water too.

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 24/03/2025 06:37

I take psyllium and magnesium daily and then use Dulcoease for a couple of days if things stop moving.

AmythestBangle · 24/03/2025 08:46

Thanks for all the replies I have few things to try! On the chia seeds, would that be the ground up powder or the whole seeds? (I like the texture of the whole ones and a shop near where I live makes a lovely coconut chia pudding).

I add a sprinkling of the whole seeds over salad. Add a bit of texture!

I have two spoons of the whole seeds in my yoghurt - I don't soak them or anything. It's worked well and I've avoided constipation since getting it for the first time in my life on 5mg.

FlappingMadly · 25/03/2025 08:55

Eat more fibre.

Oneeata · 25/03/2025 10:59

Chia pudding all the way. Works every time. Tablespoon of chia, I use a mix of milk and dbl cream just enough to cover the chia good mix and leave in fridge for a couple of hours to thicken up and within half an hour or eating it I'm legging it up the stairs. 🤣🤣
Heck with the calories - sometimes you just need it.

Magnesium before bed and spread through the day
start low and increase dose slowly or you will go the other way….!

mummymissessunshine · 28/03/2025 16:26

I found this magnesium cheat sheet super helpful

Constipation (sorry)

Lactulose or Senna to clear the backlog. Then daily chia and/or linseeds to keep things soft and moving. And drink drink drink! At least 2L water/day.

WeAllHaveWings · 28/03/2025 17:02

I started taking a 4in1 magnesium complex and it has helped.

I was initially looking at magnesium glycinate to help with my sleep problems (menopause) and ended up trying the complex to include the magnesium citrate to help with constipation too and I haven't had an issue with constipation since.

I use this one Magnesium Glycinate 4-in-1 Complex the capsules (two daily) are big and can be a bit powdery on the outside, but they are working well for me.

Psyllium husk capsules (same stuff that is in fybogel) didn't work for me but works for many.

When I got desperate once I bought some glycerin suppositories from the pharmacy to try, but by the time I walked there and back it helped things along and I didn't need to use them! Walking might help.

MatriarchCaz · 28/03/2025 17:47

Milled flax seed, dried apricot and a small square of 85% dark choc are all supposed to help (went with a friend to the bladder clinic who suffers with constipation and the nurse said these 3 are brilliant)
