Advice for newbie

Hi all, looking for advice from those of you who have been in the same place before now.
Im struggling with peri-menopausal weight gain (and I will admit, a love of crisps and wine!) and am at the biggest I’ve ever been - 5ft6 and 15stone (BMI 34). I’ve tried diets and exercise and although I’m feeling fitter, I can’t seem to shift the weight. I’m seriously considering giving Mounjaro a go. Any advice gratefully received!

I would recommend the medication to anyone who is eligible to be prescribed them, but make sure you research thoroughly before embarking on it so you are aware of the benefits vs risks. The potential side effect from the medication, and the cost commitment.

monj.co.uk will show you a list of safe registered pharmacies. Many of them have websites explaining the different injections available, side effects, risks, expectations from the trials to start your research.

Expectations are important, many people start Mounjaro and do not lose until they are on the higher doses, but you need to work your way up to them, increasing every 4 weeks, getting more expensive each time, so you might have a large outlay before you get any effect. Or you might be lucky and be a fast responder from day 1.

Read up on post Mounjaro. A lot of people find they need to stay on this medication long term to maintain their lower weight, so worth reading some of the pharmacy maintenance options too and make sure you are aware of the potential long term cost commitment. Although in the next couple of years it is probable the medications available in injection and pill form will grow which might help with the cost of maintenance.

Have a good read and come back if there are specific questions.

Hi

You will possibly be eligible for the injections through private prescription. I was prescribed due to obesity and high cholesterol.

My starting weight on Jan 8 was 13 and a half stone and I am five foot four and aged late fifties. I have tried to lose weight but it always piles back on. I can eat huge amounts and have no off switch. Very sweet tooth.

Since my very first injection, I have had very suppressed appetite. I guess I feel like skinny people feel. I don’t always remember to eat, and when I do, I am full after a very small amount.

I have lost just over two stone and would ideally like to lose another two to get to the middle of a healthy BMI. I will then go on a maintenance plan. You can take Mounjaro for life, same as you might need to take statins, beta blockers or anti depressants.

I have had minimal side effects. Mostly being very cold and somewhat tired.

My advice is to try it and see if it works for you. There is lots of support on these threads.

Thank you both. I think it’s time to give it a go.

Hi @Motherofgingers
I started MJ mid Sept 2024 at a similar weight and height to you. I am 51 and have not been through menopause yet but peri- menopause has not been kind to me and I piled on the weight.
I have lost 4 stone in 6 months and have about another 10 pounds to go to get to my goal weight.
I have had minimal side effects - just a bit of constipation on occasion and occasionally feel
a bit tired. It's without doubt the best thing I have ever done for myself- no regrets at all
Do your research , but I would highly recommend!

Thanks @IHateMozzies, I’ve submitted an application for review today.

That’s amazing @Ilovegoodison- I can only dream of that kind of weight loss!
