Lots of medicine left in pen....

Hi all,
Would you mind looking at this pic? I've definitely just taken the last dose of 0.5 but there seems to be a whole dose worth of medicine still left! Is this normal? Could I have miscounted? I really don't think I have but obviously don't want to move on too quickly!

It's the extra medication for priming the needle. Some people withdraw it with needle and syringe as an extra dose

Normal; this is why some people use a needle and syringe to extract the extra bonus dose.

It's the extra bit included in each pen that you're supposed to through away. But as it's usually another full dose lots will use it as a 'free' 5th dose instead.

You can extract it by inserting a syringe in through the red dot. I use these syringes https://ukmedi.co.uk/products/fms-micro-syringe-32g-8mm-1ml-fms-fms-32g-10ml-ukmedi-co-uk

Some people can do it by breaking the mechanism in the pen. You have to give the plunger a hard twist as it won't go to the number 1 again. You can then put on a new needle and inject as usual.
But lots are reporting this isn't working on new pens any longer.

FknOmniShambles · 28/02/2025 22:01

Thanks all. I had heard of the hard twist but wasn't sure I fancied trying that! Nonetheless, such a shame to chuck out a whole dose when it's so damn expensive! Surely it's far too much to account for priming the injection?!

You will see it referred to as the “bonus dose”

I think most of us extract it with a syringe as linked above, and inject it for week 5.

As it’s usually around 7ml in volume it will contain slightly more active ingredient than the standard 6ml dose. For example on a 2.5mg pen the bonus dose is usually about 3mg. This can be useful as a bridging dose when you are titrating up to a higher dose pen.

0.7ml and 0.6ml ...

RobinEllacotStrike · 28/02/2025 22:15

Think of it as £40.

FknOmniShambles · 28/02/2025 22:16

Hmm. This is interesting thank you. So, do you shove the needle of the purchased syringes through the red dome thing and suck up the bonus dose? Then prime it as you usually would and inject?

0.7ml and 0.6ml ...

Lol!! Yes, glad someone is paying attention 😂

@FknOmniShambles yes, that’s what I do.
