Flying with a weight loss pen

Has anyone done this? I'd be interested to know how it went.

I'm about 2 weeks away from having to fly to Canada (work trip) which will span my usual injection day. My cunning plan to put the pen and needles in my checked luggage seems to be inadvisable due to a risk of the pen freezing during the flight - I'm a bit skeptical about this but not sure I want to take the risk.

The advice is to include it in carry on luggage and then declare it at security. I'm told I should have a copy of the prescription from my GP and the pen should be in it's original packing. If the security team are persuaded it's all legit I'll be allowed to carry it on.

Obviously my GP will have now't to do with this. I've got a letter from MedExpress confirming the prescription although quite honestly I could have created it myself in Word - there's no actual signature on it. I also can show copies of the letters sent by MedExpress to my GP saying they've prescribed, but I've no idea if this is something they encounter several times a day, or they will look utterly baffled. The pen I'm taking will still have 2 injections in it, so I'm keen not to lose them or have any disruption to my regime.

If anyone has done this I'd really love to know what happened, good or bad.

Many thanks in advance.

It is easy.

Get an insulated case, pop it in your hand luggage, make sure you have either the box with the prescription details on or a print out from your prescriber.

I wasn't even required to remove it from my hand luggage.

Remember diabetics travel with kwik pens all the time and have been doing for decades.

Don't forget to tell your travel insurance you are taking MJ, and take at least one more needle than you need.

The above worked for six flights, departing in three countries.

Have taken a few flights with mine, nobody cared.

Yes - I’ve got an insulated case from Amazon that keeps the pen cold, I then just tuck the cardboard box with the prescription label on it into the case with it.

Easy I have travelled twice with a pen. Had my MJ pen in hand baggage inside my Frio wallet. Downloaded prescription to phone.

Good advice to take extra needle or two.

No one was interested at security at LHR, CDG nor Delhi.

As everyone else says, you just put it in your hand luggage with insulation and cool blocks of some kind (under 100 ml size). Good to have prescription/letter with you, but I’ve never been asked about it anywhere in Europe or South America. It just goes through the scanner.

You don't need to declare it at security. It's treated the same as any other liquid. I've travelled with a bottle of oramorph before, didn't even take a copy of the script with me.

I took mine with 3 needles and 2 syringes (covering all bases, I was away for 2 injections) in myclear toiletry bag and went through 2 airports in the uk (including heathrow) plus one in Europe and a couple in South America without anyone even looking at it.

I actually used an old glasses case to carry it all in which worked fine.

SorryAboutTheWeight · 26/02/2025 16:23

Many thanks for the reassurance. I'll just take it as carry on along with my other meds. I admit I don't keep mine chilled once I've taken the first dose - the old glasses case is a top idea.

I've flown with mine twice a month for a year. Never been asked about it.
Had a letter from prescriber and my name is on the box.
Hand luggage.
