Only injecting half the dose

I can’t manage the full dose I’m on so want to go back down
but in the meantime can I only inject half of the primed quickpen- mounjaro
i know you can only prime it 4 times, so I can’t just count half the number of clicks
so if I just push the plunger half way then wait a week- does that work?
and just take the needle off and put a new one on the following week obviously
i have an expensive programme so can’t really afford to bin 3 doses

You can count half the number of clicks - 30. Do that so the plunger comes half way out and jab as normal. I don't know if it's risky doing it the way you have but leaving it half plunged doesn't sound ideal.
If you only use half doses you will end up disposing of half of the pen though.

Thanks- but the pen only allows 4 attempts
so if I only do 30 clicks I waste the other half still

No it shouldn’t, it goes by how many clicks.

Buy insulin syringes and use them to draw another dose out through the rubber seal. 5 doses from a pen is within the dates that are recommended, but any more isnt recommended by the manufacturer. Its up to you about taking more though

No, the OP is correct. I did half doses with my first pen and it only let me punch 4 times. I had to use an insulin needle for the other doses.

OP I recon it would be fine, just be careful to monitor your dosing. Maybe count 30 clicks, mark the pen and then keep winding. The mark will make it easier to see when to stop.

I don't know why your pen stops working after 4 doses. I've counted and used a pen for 6 separate doses before and it was fine.

The pens have 240 clicked doses available, which is 4 X 60. Plus a bit for priming.

FalafelLife · 20/02/2025 22:31

I take 3.75 out of a 5mg pen every week. I count 45 clicks, and I can get five doses out of the pen before it stops clicking. It’s definitely to do with how many clicks the pen has done not how many times it has been plunged in.

Time4changeagain · 20/02/2025 23:12

You prime the pen by one or two clicks before turning to 1 for a full dose. If there is a problem & no medication comes out of the needle you would change the needle and prime again. So there’s a possibility of having to prime more than 4 times whilst using the pen.
Im not sure as to where the 4 attempts information has come from.
Just count 30 clicks then inject. As PP’s have said, The pen will dispense at least 4 full doses (240 clicks). It doesn’t go on how many times you plunge the pen.

WeAllHaveWings · 20/02/2025 23:17

Same as @FalafelLife my last 5 pens I have done 45 clicks and get 5 doses no problem. When I try for a 6th dose the pen locks at around 22 clicks.

I noted for my last two pens the total clicks (including priming) before locking - one was 257 clicks the other 258.

IHateMozzies · 21/02/2025 09:57

You can definitely do more than 4 uses. The pen has a total of 240 clicks, plus a few extra for priming. It doesn’t matter how many times you use it, it just stops after the total clicks have been used.

crumbsonmyface · 21/02/2025 10:23

You can definitely do more than 4 doses, but it will stop working when you get to the last dose of the pen (minus the extra fluid in there).

scanni · 21/02/2025 10:26

No because you need to prime it.

Finallydoingit24 · 21/02/2025 12:54

I inject smaller doses and you can definitely inject more than four times. You count the clicks, inject and then it goes back to zero for the next time. You then prime as normal and inject the next time. It’s fine.

Hello. Can I do this with my 7.5mg pen? I found 5mg wasn’t enough but 7.5mg makes me feel sick for a few days. So if I make 4 doses into 5 doses by having a bit less I think this will work for me?

Yes. 48 clicks will give you 6mg.

Mcmgr · 06/07/2025 21:45

Iit’s actually pretty easy to get as many clicks as necessary form a single pen. Once all the doses have been administered and it won’t screw up any more, all you do is put a bit more force into turning it and it then it turns (clicks) left and right as many times as needed, hope this helps!
