Mounjaro Advice

Hi all,

I’ve had four weeks of the 2.5mg Mounjaro pen and during the final week I had some rough side effects of diarrhoea and sulphur burps and vomitted once. I’m fine now but it bothered me for 2-3 days.

Last week I didn’t inject to give myself a weeks break. The issue is that I was delivered a 5mg pen when I was feeling fine and it’s been in the fridge since it was delivered.

I wondered what people would suggest about injecting again tomorrow but using a half dose (30 clicks in a 5mg pen). I know it’ll waste some medication in the pen if I do that for four weeks but I’m not too fussed. Just don’t want to buy another 2.5mg pen. I think I may stop using Mounjaro once this pen is done.

Any help/advice from experience would be welcome.

If you have missed a week, then I think you should stay on 2.5

Ohyay · 08/02/2025 19:52

Weirdly I feel far better on 5mg than I did 2.5mg

Manclad · 08/02/2025 20:18

The problem with staying on 2.5 is that I only have a 5mg pen. That’s why I’m saying smaller doses. I don’t want to buy a new pen either.

You could take 2.5mg today or tomorrow, and then take 5mg the week after that, assuming you feel ok. Or do another 2.5mg next week and then move to the full 5mg after that.

Why do you think you might stop after this pen?

Manclad · 08/02/2025 20:25

Just feel like I want to try and carry on losing weight without Mounjaro. My BMI is now under 30 so I’d like to try on my own when the pen is done. I’ve changed eating habits etc so fingers crossed.

If 2.5mg was/is working for you I'd probably do 5 weeks of 2.5mg from your 5mg pen. You'd always have the option to try a full 5mg dose if you felt you needed to.

WeAllHaveWings · 08/02/2025 20:43

We obviously don't know you whole history, but assuming you decided on medical intervention with Mounjaro for your obesity as a last resort as you have tried without success to lose and sustain weight loss before, being realistic 4 weeks, or even 8 weeks, is not long enough to change your eating habits long term or, like many of us, you would have done it long before now.

If you believe you have made the changes to eating habits and can sustain those, there is the option to leave the 2.5mg pen in the fridge (it will last there unused until the expiry date), and see if the changes to your eating habits can be maintained after the medication has completely left your system.

How much weight do you have to lose?
What is your bmi?

What didnt work previously which made you go to mounjaro?

SurreyisSunny · 08/02/2025 20:46

You can get extra needles so use the pen for longer

I had quite bad side effects (worst was projectile vomiting whilst also having diarrhoea) but they’ve not been so bad when I’m onto the second pen of a dose

Manclad · 08/02/2025 21:32

At my heaviest I guess my BMI was 37/38 but I was down to 32 and have moved between 30
and 32 for about ten years. I’m in my forties now and losing weight has become harder hence when I tried Mounjaro.

The side effects for a few days weren’t great but I’d had nothing in the previous 3.5 weeks so couldn’t understand it. Seemed to be hardest at night.

My BMI is currently 29.5 and I’m looking to lose another stone or so to take it down to 27.5. Hopefully I can work hard to maintain that now. I’ve got 13 pounds to lose to was hoping another 4 weeks of 2.5 would get me within half a stone of that target. I’ve lost over a stone in the first four weeks using Mounjaro, going to the gym a couple of times a week and eating really healthy meals and snacks.

@Manclad the amount of medication in your system builds up each week, so after 3 injections the level would be much higher than the first week. There's a website that you can use to create a graph of the dosage level in your system that can help with visualising this:

glp1plotter.com

You likely reached a level of the medication that you found harder to tolerate after the first 3 injections.

Thank you! That’s really helpful. Tomorrow will be 14 days since my last injection so I guess from the link that means the levels will have fallen in my system to the quite a low level before my new jab
