Mounjaro - What's your experience of moving up to 5mg from 2.5mg

HowAmYa · 06/02/2025 19:11

Hi all.

I've done 4 weeks on Mounjaro 2.5mg and now I'm moving up to 5mg, being delivered in a couple days.

I have had next no side effects and weight loss has been really good, if I'm honest I only moved up because i was prompted to and a part of me wishes I had stuck to the 2.5 for a bit longer.

How has everyone else been when they've moved up strengths?

Stick with 2.5mg by using 30 clicks. No point going up if 2.5mg is working well for you. Also means you will get 5 weeks out of your 5mg pen.

Shrinkingrose · 06/02/2025 19:27

I was unwell th4 first week. But it worked really well as a stepping stone as the losses remain consistent as you move up, or get bigger, now on ten and feel fab on it, with good suppression 7 days a week,

WontLetThoseRobotsDefeatMe · 06/02/2025 19:30

I had no issues at all, and moved onto it after a month on 2.5mg. I'm still on that 5mg, getting good suppression for the week with minimal side affects.

Bananaram · 06/02/2025 19:43

I was fine moving up to 5mg, mild side effects of sulphuric burps like I had with 2.5mg. I didn't lose anything on 2.5mg but 5mg has been full on suppression so I chose to stay on it for another month which officially starts tomorrow.

CobaltRewind · 06/02/2025 20:08

I felt horrendous, wish I’d stayed at 2.5 or went to 3.75

Aitchtee · 06/02/2025 21:32

Horrific! I had to step up gradually and even that was hard going.
I am still on 5 now though 30 weeks on so think I’m a super responder 😂

Sampler · 06/02/2025 21:55

4 months on and I’m still on 3.75 (45 clicks of 5mg pen). I took 2.5 for 2 months I think. I keep meaning to increase but there’s no point as I don’t need to.
No point rushing to increase if you have weight loss and suppression on your current dose.

lapuf · 06/02/2025 22:03

I did second pen at 3.75 and worked well, lost 6.5lbs in six weeks but it's sped up on 5mg

Doggymummar · 06/02/2025 22:04

No issues at all. About to go to 15mg next week. Just had odd days of constipation nothing of note

Usernamechangeforthis12 · 06/02/2025 22:06

I moved up to 5mg in September and the next week went down to 3.75mg which seems to be my happy dose still. Still in 3.75mg

HowAmYa · 07/02/2025 07:48

Oh wow so many responses, I appreciate them all.

In terms of starting with 3.75, this is interesting as id like to be able to stay as side effects free if possible. I think my very first dose of 2.5mg gave me heartburn and then nothing after each dose.

I don't really need or want to increase, I went to reorder the 2.5 and it's like they forced me with the amount of prompts and recommendation that I only do 2.5 for 4 weeks!

I think I'll give the 3.75 a go and go from there.

Thank you lovely ladies so much, it's amazing to be able to get the help, support and advice from others doing the same 😃 x

I wouldn't move up. I have been in 2.5 for 3 months now and while the suppression isn't as strong as it was at the very start, it's still doing a great job.

Heydiddlediddlethe · 07/02/2025 11:53

I think you get an idea as to how your body will react based on the 2.5. If you have had great loss in the first month, there is no reason to increase. I’ve had brilliant loss but around the end of the month the suppression has started to go by around day 4-5 of the week so i have just used my 5mg pen but only did 40 clicks which i think is about 3.3 mg. So waiting to see how it feels. I do get the shivers and tiredness quite a lot which stops me from exercising so hoping it won’t get much worse with the higher dose.
Good luck

stopringingme · 07/02/2025 12:07

I had one week that was great on 5mg, and the second week was horrendous.

I had terrible indigestion, dizziness, and constipation, and I vomited 3 times. I did not do anything different in my eating habits to previous weeks and was drinking over 2 litres of water a day.

I have had a week off and have kept up the healthy eating and water drinking and have still lost weight. There was no suppression, just willpower, but the drug will still be in my system.

I am going to use 2.5mg out of my 5mg this weekend as it will be 2 weeks since my last jab, then order another 2.5mg if I don't have any bad side effects, if I do I might have to give it up, which will be a shame.

Heydiddlediddlethe · 07/02/2025 12:14

@stopringingme how were you on 2.5mg?

housemaus · 07/02/2025 12:15

I got the dreaded sulphur burps on 5mg (ordered some peppermint oil capsules which have fixed it) but other than that, no side effects!

stopringingme · 07/02/2025 12:43

Heydiddlediddlethe · 07/02/2025 12:14

@stopringingme how were you on 2.5mg?

I was good on 2.5mg, losing steadily, I had one short dose of indigestion at the beginning but no really terrible side effects.

I was in two minds whether to go up to 5mg or not. How I wish I didn't last week !

Why increase to 3.75mg if 2.5mg is working for you? What do you want to achieve/change? There is always a chance with every increase side effects start kicking in - don't fix it if it isn't broken.

If you stick at 2.5mg from your 5mg pen until it stops giving you what you need even if that is just another week or two, you then have 3.75mg ready to step up to if/when you need it. Some people stick with 2.5mg for many months.

I moved from 2.5mg to 3.75mg after the 5 weeks from my first 2.5mg pen because I felt I had to move up, in hindsight with more knowledge I should have stuck with 2.5mg. I've been on 3.75mg for 6 months now, as I didn't want to move back down (it wasn't broken so no need to fix it!) and still consistently losing.

I would also be moving to a provider that was more patient led, you shouldn't be feeling forced into anything.

cloudjumper · 07/02/2025 13:19

I've done the 5 mg jab earlier this week and have had no problems. Still feeling very cold and am slightly constipated, which I had on 2.5 mg as well. Suppression is definitely stronger, it had started to decrease with 2.5 mg.

Moier · 07/02/2025 13:25

A lot of you are getting more out of one pen than recommended.. it's suppose to only last 30 days.. lots of advice by expert GPs etc have been all over SM and the telly.
Keep using for over the 30 days can cause serious side effects... some people being admitted to hospital. Please follow the guidelines.
I've gone up as recommended each month.
No side effects..reverses my type two diabetes.
Lost 3 and half stone .( I'm on 10mg).

HowAmYa · 07/02/2025 16:55

I agree with two posters above, I'm a little paranoid to not follow administration to the letter as its only got 30 day shelf life. There was a lot left over in my first pen and I googled and found many people would extract using needles from Amazon and administer another dose, this gave me the heebie jeebies! I don't think, with my limited experience in anything medical, I could stray from the instructions given by a professional. But each to their own.

@WeAllHaveWings Im afraid you may be onto something here. I've read so much about MJ the last few weeks and I do think that it should be a little better controlled. And of course with more patients needs focused on by the provider. I do wish they didn't just auto assume it's gonna be week 5 so lets just thrust 5mg on her.

I will see how I get on with this 5mg, giving it a go tonight, and if I have a hellish week I'll go back down to 2.5

Thank you all for your honesty x

A 5rh bonus dose is within the thirty days.

day 1. Injection 1.
day 8, injection 2
day 15, injection 3
day 22, injection 4
day 29, bonus dose/5th injection.

the insulin pen when I first tried it I could not bring myself to do it. However I then did do it a couple of months later and found not only is it easy, it is much gentler than the pen.the pens can be stiff, hard to push, leave bruises, and often red sore injection site reactions. The insulin needle has none of these downsides.

This is interesting, I'm glad you have mentioned this. I must say I do find the pens a little clacky and hard to push.

I like that there's a bonus within the 30 days

As said, it took me 3 months to do it, I couldn’t first time, I panicked. But I think I got so used to the pens it just seemed a next step.

it is so easy, you get a fine gauge 8mm insulin needle, buy from a medical supplier not Amazon as those are for animals,.

Just stick it in the little red bung, withdraw to 6mg on the 1 mg pen, (mg or ml I always get confused) then push the stopper up till the air is out and prime as usual ie see a little liquid squirt out, then inject it in, I don’t go whole way, so I do it so I can still see half the needle, and then push down, wait five seconds, job done.

as it is subcutaneous air bubbles aren’t really relevant. But the air comes out as soon as you push the stopper up and prime, so you can see no bubbles.

i was surprised, it is genuinely much gentler than the pen. I’m considering only doing the insulin needles now, as the pen is leaving me with bruises.

Shrinkingrose · 07/02/2025 17:16

Also I moved up the doses monthly as per the guidelines to find my optimal dose, so wasn’t bothered really about the 5th dose, but I am now on 10mg and that’s my optimal dose, so staying here, so making the pen last five weeks and not four represents a cost saving,

so instead of 42 pounds a week it is 35, and reduces the cost of a 170 pound pen to 136 a month,
