I’ve bought mounjaro … will it help?

I’m 23 stone, BMI about 48. Dress size 30-32. I’m 34, been obese since I was 7 years old.

I’ve been on high dose mirtazapine for years, which my GP is very reluctant to take me off, as it works, but it’s got me to this weight. I’ve even had periods of sleep eating.

I’ve tried slimming world, no success, and I’m now so big that even just walking is becoming a challenge.

My GP has referred me for discussions about a gastric sleeve but said I was free to try mounjaro and see if that worked …

I’m terrified that this will just fail too, I’m terrible at dieting, I just see it as punishment (I have a weird relationship with food).

Does it mean you’re not hungry any more? I can eat constantly, even if I’m not hungry I still get cravings!

I was just over 20st.9lbs and took my first jab on the 2nd January. I'm now 19st 2lbs

It does work but you need to make sure that you eat well at the same time.

Can you work with a nutritionist as well as taking MJ ?

A gastric sleeve won't solve your troubled relationship with food, but it will get you out of medical danger, and more able to exercise which releases similar endorphins to food. You may then find a mixture of therapy and weight loss injections will stabilise you. I used to be nearly 30st and I'm now 12st. You deserve a better life than you have. I hope you can get to a happier place xx

You don’t need to calorie count although I prefer it and do.

You do need to eat well to minimise side effects, but that does not mean not eating anything ‘nice’. I eat chocolate or crisps pretty much every day 😂 just in much smaller quantities.

the biggest thing you need to do is give it a chance. The first month may not be the best - you might have a good first week and then find it ‘not working’ the rest of the pen. The goal is to get used to the medication. I would say give it a few months and an honest try!

feel free to come over to the 5st + to lose thread! I have 11st stone total to lose and an about half way through!!

For a lot of us on Mumsnet, Op, WLI have quietened the constant food noise that we experience.

You won't know if it works for you unless you try it. I have found huge amounts of support on here - find the thread for February starts, join it and start taking the injections.

Good luck.

I was 22 stone and now I'm 14st 13lbs, so it's working for me. There is every chance that Mounjaro will work for you too. It's a long process, it may take a few weeks to start producing weight loss which is worth remembering.

I don't feel like I'm dieting, or punishing myself at all. I'm relaxed and happy around food, and eat what I feel like, which due to the Mounjaro is now smaller quantities and healthier things. I was a terrible grazer before, which has just stopped.

Definitely worth giving it a good try. For me it has removed the desire for unhealthy foods and the need to overeat. Pretty astounding effects from a few drops of liquid.

In order not to get an upset tummy I have to eat plenty of fibre and drink a lot of water. I also prioritize protein to feel full and avoid fried things because they make me burp sulphur. With that sorted, no side effects and it’s very effective.

Good luck! There are Feb 25 starter threads for support or you could keep in touch here.

IHateMozzies · 04/02/2025 13:14

It will definitely curb your hunger but you do still have to work with it. It’s not a magic wand, you need to look at your diet and try and get lots of protein in.

good luck x
