Huge early losses...

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 02/02/2025 14:55

What is going on with people with huge early loses. I have just seen somewhere of someone who list a stone in 2 weeks.

How? Like even not eating at all you wouldn't lose weight that quickly would you. Do they look a stone thinner?

I may also be slightly jealous but really, I'm just curious as to how it's working.

It is possible when your starting weight is high, it might not be healthy to lose so much so quick but I did lose 10lb in a week by doing a juice cleanse, it was most certainly mostly water weight though

MummyInTheNecropolis · 02/02/2025 15:14

I lost 13lbs in my first week but I was almost 25 stone to begin with. It was certainly mostly water and not at all noticeable. I know from past experience that I won’t really look or feel any different until I’ve lost around 2.5-3 stone and the big losses will of course slow down as time goes on. I was eating 3 meals a day, around 1200-1400 calories during this time.

SilenceInside · 02/02/2025 15:26

I lost 9 pounds the first week, then 2 pounds the following week, and then 7 pounds the week after that. I certainly didn't intend to! But, the effects of Mounjaro happened pretty much immediately for me, and I found I was eating so much less than I had been. My TDEE would have been around 2,400 calories at my starting weight of 22 stone, and initially I was eating maybe 800 cals a day. So that's a deficit of 1600 each day, so I would have lost over 3 pounds from that alone and some days I was struggling to eat even that. Plus, I think a lot was water retention and inflammation that calmed down straight away too. What I was eating changed almost immediately as well - I went right off sugar/carbs and only wanted to eat protein and veg. So perhaps that made a difference too?

Ladymuck2022 · 02/02/2025 15:31

Bigger people losing water?

I know when I started the first week was 12lb then 2nd week 6lbs then down to usual half pound to a couple of pounds each week. I started nearer 20 stone in late 22 and remember seeing it in my face first. I was trying really hard and having small meals on the daily injection at that time. Half a sandwich, pizza topped on the big portabella mushrooms. I’m sure I remember people needing tummy tucks and seeing people lose what took me months in just weeks.

Just done entire dry January now in a 16 stone body and the month’s loss has been 6.5lb.

housemaus · 02/02/2025 15:36

I lost 7lb in the first week and 6lb in the second - I have quite a lot to lose, though, and it wasn't at all visible. I think mostly water weight plus the shock of me suddenly eating much less than usual AND starting to go to the gym most days. It's slowed down to a more sedate 3-4lb a week now.

OnyourbarksGSG · 02/02/2025 15:37

I lost 35lb in 7 weeks. Got gall stones in week 8 and have been left in agony with them 3 times so had to come off right away.

Polypoj · 02/02/2025 15:40

I read somewhere that losing weight too quickly can cause gallstone issues?

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 02/02/2025 16:04

I'm also a bigger person (sw 22stone) so was perhaps hoping I would if it was a bigger person thing.

But also I'm curious. And don't really understand water weight and inflammation so may Google too.

Ultimately I'm happy as I've done a month and I'm losing (slowly) and completely relate to going off all unhealthy foods. It's so great.

I genuinely was just curious and fascinated by it all. It's so different to anything I've done before.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 02/02/2025 16:07

And we'll done all of you too. But sorry about the gallstones. Eek. I had those when I was slim and it was agony.

I think for me generally where I'm bigger the weight loss won't notice for many stone. I just meant literally if it's "water weight" has something actually left your body (I feel I don't know basic fat loss biology here!)

I lost 9 lbs in the first week. I had 4 - 5 stone to lose in total (now about half that). Some of that 9 lbs was water weight, I’m sure, but it has stayed off and I am now losing about a pound a week.

To lose fat via lipolysis, firstly the large fat cells release their water before breaking down. So water is lost first.

@FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden I've been on Mounjaro 2 weeks tomorrow and have lost 1 stone and 1lb. My start weight was 17 stone.

I've been walking everyday. Drinking 4l of water amd eating less than 1200 a day.

I've lost quite a lot of weight very quickly on 2.5mg amd can tell the difference on my tummy.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 02/02/2025 18:06

Wow that's amazing @Jjff89!!

I'm doing similar but nowhere near those loses. I guess I'm in it for the long game but it would have been nice if we all lost a lot to begin with!!

@FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden thank you I didn't expect to shed so much so quickly. It has really helped me stop snacking amd eating larger portions.

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 02/02/2025 20:02

In the bad old days of slimming clubs I went to both Weight Watchers and Slimming World and I remember very big new members fairly frequently having enormous losses of up to 13lbs in their first week, which were celebrated very publicly by the leader. I don’t think it’s a unique phenomenon to WLI at all.

NotOlive · 02/02/2025 20:10

In contrast, I’ve been on Mounjaro for 8 weeks now, BMI 53, and only lost 4lbs. So a bit pissed off compared with some of the reported losses on here. I don’t think it’s kicking in yet, I just get a bit of suppression on days 2-4 after injecting. Not having side effects so will move up to 7.5 dose.

Polypoj · 02/02/2025 20:57

It’s quite an interesting subject.

Unlike many people, in the past, I have usually lost very little weight, if any, at the beginning of any diet. I have always been amazed when people lose 4 or 5 lbs the first week even when they are only modestly overweight. Usually for me it then gradually picks up speed after a month or so to a steady weight loss.

However, with Wegovy I lost 4 pounds the first week and then nothing the next 3 - 4 weeks! Very odd. I have about 2 to 3 stone overall to lose.

Reading the posts above, I suspect what I lost during the first week was mostly water weight, so there must be some element of water retention (perhaps due to larger glucose stores) or some kind of inflammation that some people have more than others. When I look back, I noticed that a certain puffiness disappeared. After that first month I started to lose weight more steadily, and I suspect and hope that was actually mostly fat, not water. (Hopefully not too much muscle 💪🤞).

Polypoj · 02/02/2025 21:04

I have just moved to 7.5 @NotOlive and can definitely feel more appetite suppression, though still enjoying my food.

Soooooooverthisnow · 02/02/2025 21:29

I've got somewhere in the region of 7-9st to lose. I read somewhere that no one notices the first stone you lose, you notice the second and other people will start to notice from the 3rd. Sounds about right from my (quite distant) memory of previous (short lived) slimming world successes

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 02/02/2025 22:01

Sounds similar to the ‘paper towel effect’ @Soooooooverthisnow.

Yes you would. I lost a stone in a week in hospital once. Not eating even once as was nil by mouth every day apart from the evenings when they decided the procedure would be 'tomorrow'. (this happened every single day)By then all the food gone. But constant throwing up due to morphine took even more out of me

Its liquid from your body mainly.

I was 15 stone at the time, so if you're overweight it very much can happen

Doggymummar · 02/02/2025 22:15

Renpho scales are great to tell you if you are losing fat or water. Other s ales are also available lol. I lose less than a pound a week. It's been two years in March and I've lost and maintained a loss of 60lb. I've had a plateau of more than six months, a gain of ten pound but the overall trend is down and that's what counts. My TDEe is 1400 and I try to stick to between 8 and 1200.

Out of interest how do you know if these are accurate, I read all the time that they're notoriously inaccurate

I lost 1st 1lb in my first two weeks, and have nearly finished my 6th week. I started at 15st 7lb ish, and am now around 13st 12lb.
For the last 8 months I have been walking 16000 steps a day, running 2-3 times a week, strength training twice a week, and keeping calories to 1750 or below.
However, I also have no thyroid, after a thyroidectomy 10 years ago, and I believe there was a few other underlying things that were preventing me losing the weight.
MJ seems to have helped with all of that. I honestly never expected to see results this quickly, especially on the 2.5mg dose.
