Cannot cope with upset tummy on mounjaro

Mumof424 · 23/01/2025 14:21

Hi Everyone,

I started taking mounjaro at the start of November 2.5mg and had the occasional bit of mild nausea and tummy pain/upset tummy. I increased to 5mg this month and after the 3rd injection I have had the worst upset tummy imaginable. Sulphur burps, griping pain, and diarrhea every single time I eat, and not mild diarrhea, I've actually been unable to go to work. I'm really scared to take the 4th injection and I'm unsure if this will pass or if I should reduce back to 2.5mg?

Ive lost 12kg so far and I was just starting to physically feel it and feel the progress! Any advice? Thanks

I'm due to start Ozempic early next week and have heard of similar side effects with that too, so I am following these threads quite closely as it worries me somewhat.

Maybe going back down would allow things to settle down again, if the lower dose felt better and was working? I have to admit though that I am no expert. I am under the GP for mine and qualify to get it on the NHS due to some medical conditions. I guess I am fortunate that I won't have to pay for it, but I do still have some reservations.

I suppose all we can do is try.

You should get advice from your provider in the first instance. (Personally, I would reduce back to 2.5mg, but I'm not a medic.)

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 23/01/2025 14:44

The first thing to do is look at your diet and try to work out what is causing it. People seem to react to some weird things when taking MJ!

Eat very bland foods (or even fast) for 24 hours to see if it stops then introduce other foods to see what you react to.

I assume you are already taking an Imodium type drug? Peppermint capsules for the burps seem to be mentioned everywhere. The burps happen due to fermenting food in your system and continuing to pile more and more on top will not be helping.

If you were having success at 2.5, go back down or split the difference and count clicks to 3.75. Hope it clears soon!

You could check with your provider, and see what they advise.

When is your next injection due?

paulyispoorly · 23/01/2025 14:45

I'm suffering exactly the same at the moment- been on 10mg a few weeks now and every day after injection eggy burps nausea and sometimes all day diarrhoea

Snozzlemaid · 23/01/2025 19:08

I experienced this after 3 doses of 10mg.
I went back down to 7.5 and it settled down again, so I'd suggest for your next dose you drop down to 2.5 again.

okydokethen · 23/01/2025 20:59

Ozempic didn't work for me because of this, I was so sick I was inactive and ate to comfort my feeling rubbish.

Lola3034 · 23/01/2025 23:02

There is a lot of diarrhea and Vomiting going about. Are you sure it is Mounjaro? My entire family had a horrible bug recently and some other people that I know are having it right now. I originally thought it was Mounjaro too until my hubby and child got it and they aren't on Mounjaro.

Lola3034 · 23/01/2025 23:03

Definitely worth reducing the dose just in case

BackToWegovy · 23/01/2025 23:03

This happened to me on my 4th 10mg dose of Mounjaro having been fine up until then and it happened again with every dose after that of 4mg or more. I couldn’t take it and have successfully switched back to Wegovy.

itswinetimexxx · 24/01/2025 07:29

This has happened to me this week on my first dose of 5mg. Started 10 weeks ago on 2.5mg then 3.75mg with no side effects. I'm on day 3 of diarrhoea! I'm so miserable.
I've taken Imodium which hasn't helped. Any other suggestions? Or I just have to wait for the injection to wear off? I'm definitely going back down to 3.75 next week (if I can face it!)

healthybychristmas · 24/01/2025 07:33

I've been on 7.5 for several months and after the first month haven't had any side-effects at all. The weight has slowly been creeping off and I don't intend to go up a dose.

This sounds just like me! First 5mg dose and have had diarrhea last two days onto my Third night now, did yours get better? Have you taken next dose yet?

Mumof424 · 30/01/2025 07:20

Hi everyone. I took the next dose as planned and 36 hours later I had diarrhea again!! This time for 24 hours. Ive ordered the next pen but I've gone back to 2.5mg I just can't cope with the upset tummy at all

I went back down to 3.75 this week, took my jab a day later as I couldn't be off work again! It was fine until around 4am today... terrible upset tummy again, cramps and eggy burps! It's so strange as up until last week I had very minor side effects. I'm going to go back to 2.5mg next week. Hope you're feeling better this week, any tips on stuff that's worked? Rennies and peppermint tea is good for the burps

Mumof424 · 02/02/2025 15:32

I took 2.5mg yesterday and so far no side effects at all. I was losing weight slowly around 3kg a month from start of November so I've decided to stay on 2.5mg and continue. Ive lost 7kg the month I used 5mg but I think alot of that is because I either couldn't eat at all or when I did i spent hours in a bathroom so not healthy at all! I also struggled to exercise all month because I felt so poorly! My tummy has settled, I ate a whole cooked meal today for the first time in 2 weeks! And it's settled nicely in my tummy, no pain, burps or bathroom trips! I had tried, peppermint tea, Gaviscon, Rennies and immodium! No medicine helped at all, the peppermint tea brought mild relief from the burps for around 20 minutes but that's all!

I hope you're all getting on okay xx

I've decided I'm going to have a break for a few weeks and start again on 2.5mg. It's better to lose slowly and still have a life and enjoy food afterwards. Having too much suppression is unrealistic for coping when MJ is finished

Mumof424 · 02/02/2025 21:48

Yes I agree. I would much rather lose slowly and steadily while I'm making lifestyle changes so I keep the weight off! I was honestly miserable the last few weeks with my tummy and being unable to eat anything at all some days, not even a dry cracker!

I’ve just started 3rd week on monjaro 10mg a Currently lost about 76 pounds which is great but just started getting quite bad diarrhoea a bit of vomiting unsettled stomach and nasty burping any ideas please to help settle stomachs diorrrhea nausea vomiting constipation and burps would be greatly appreciated please help it’s so uncomfortable thanks

myladyjane · 26/08/2025 18:23

I have this when I go up a dose so I go up very slowly and click count. I do find pepto bismol works really well to settle the upset tummy. Nothing else has come close to it tbh - I generally only need one dose, sometimes 2.

ICESTARSILVER · 29/08/2025 22:00

Thanx

Papergirl1968 · 29/08/2025 22:43

I’m now on 12.5mg and find some weeks I’m ok, other weeks I have more side effects. I skipped a week as really wasn’t feeling well one weekend with what seems to have been an unrelated bug and this week have been fine on it, but also more hungry so I think it definitely builds up in your body and skipping a week helped with the side effects. Or like pp have advised, try reducing the dose.
For me, eating a big, fatty or high cal meal especially in the first couple of days after injecting can cause diarrhoea to come on very suddenly and violently!
i have no sense of smell so the sulphur burps don’t really bother me. In fact they can help ease the relief a bit. Just have to be careful when around other people as I hadn’t actually realised they smelt bad my dds told me.
I can feel ok until I go to bed and then the acid reflux/indigestion/heartburn kicks in, and an extra pillow to prop me up a bit more helps.
A doctor did advise me to skip a dose if you think you have a bug, covid, food poisoning, anything like that, and I think this is because in extreme cases you can get dehydrated due to the illness anyway. Both my dd and a friend, neither on mounjaro, recently had to go on drips due to d&v.
