Bonus dose?

I failed to use the pen for a bonus dose with my first pen and I didn’t have syringes. I’m prepared with syringes this time. What do I have to do to get the bonus dose? I will be taking 3.75mg dose from a 5mg pen.

I did this, I wiped the red rubber part with an alcohol wipe that came with the syringes..then I withdrew up to the 0.42 mark.
This was roughly 3.75mg from the 5mg dose.
Then I just injected it slowly into my thigh as normal.

If have been taking 45 clicks per dose (3.75mg) you should be able get your 5th dose without the pen locking.

If you are taking a 6th dose on day 35, you need to withdraw 0.45ml (or very slightly more so you can prime the syringe/needle before injecting)

That’s great to know the pen might still work! I’m nervous because my first pen the plunger just didn’t work. Yes it’ll be the 5th dose this week. Thank you.

@Coffeeandcinnamonbun the last two pens I noted the total number of clicks, both pens stopped clicking around 257-258 clicks (including priming).

45 clicks x 5 = 225 clicks + priming; so is well before the pen locks.

Keep an eye on the position of the plunger before and after the injecting. After the 5th dose I am always slightly unsettled how much liquid is still in the pen (even though I know there will still be around 0.7ml), so I like to be sure the plunger moved ok.

Hi - new to Mournjaro!

I have just taken my first injection of 2.5mg (Tuesday) and see alot of people mention the bonus dose... Apologies if I come across as thick, but could someone please put into simpleton terminology, how you obtain this? My first dose, I moved the "clicker" to the 1 sign to inject. After doing this for 4 weeks, will there be enough for one more dose? You mention above about the pens only allowing a certain number of clicks?

Or is it only in the 5mg plus pens, that an extra dose is available?

@ThatPearlSeal all pens contain the 4 doses of 0.6ml plus some extra "buffer" medication liquid which is there in order to be able to prime the pen each time you inject. A small amount of liquid is ejected from the pen each time you prime. If you have a faulty needle you may need to prime more than once, so there is enough "spare" liquid to allow for this.

After doing the 4 normal doses, this extra liquid is left in the pen. The pen mechanism has a locking action which means it won't turn again once you've done the 4 normal doses. In order to use the remaining liquid you either have to force the mechanism to break the lock, which then means you can turn to 1 as normal and do another injection. Sometimes, forcing the mechanism doesn't work and it breaks the plunger and you can't inject with the pen. In that case, some people buy separate syringes and extract the remaining liquid (via the red seal at the needle end of the pen), measure the amount and inject it that way.

All of that is clearly not in the manufacturer's instructions and no provider would expect you to do this with the pen.

After the 4th dose there will still be some liquid left in the pen, which is usually enough for another dose. The pen is designed to not dispense this and the official advice is to discard it, but many people chose to use it to save on costs.

Some people manage to get the pen to work for the last bit by forcing the top round past where it stops (snapping an internal plastic bit in process). This often doesn't work, especially with newer pens as the manufacturers seem to have got wise, so the alternative is to use a separate syringe to draw the liquid out through the red dot at the bottom and inject.

@ThatPearlSeal this shows how your pen should look after each dose. Once you have done your 4th dose there will be liquid left in the pen which instructions say to bin and the pen locks so you can't get to it.

If you want to use it, it is worth buying some syringes to have on standby incase you try the hard twist (search mounjaro kwik pen 5th dose on youtube) and it doesn't work - google 1ml 8mm 32G syringe and buy from a UK medical supplier (not amazon).

Following. I took my 4th 2.5mg dose on Thursday and have my 5mg pen arriving this Thursday. I still have a full dose left but not sure how to get at it

Spare pen needles you can buy anywhere including Amazon if you know the brand you want.

If you are after syringes I use uk medi.

With the extra dose though, isn't the liquid only good for 30 days or is that just what they say to stop people doing the extra dose?

@Dozycuntlaters you can fit 5 doses within the 30 days. Day 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.
