You've reached your goal weight - come chat about maintenance, not regaining, going cold turkey or titrating down

Would people who've hit their target weight be interested in a general thread on how they are getting on? You might be titrating your WLI down, you might be going cold turkey, you might be on a maintenance programme or you might have gone back on.

I used MJ for 5 months and I've hit my goal and I'm muddling through with my own version of "maintenance". I'm doing a 1.25 dose weekly to use up what I've got left and cut down gradually, so I don't lose all the benefits of MJ immediately. I was a complete lightweight and did the whole 5 months on just 2.5, as I had savage suppression and loss of appetite. So, I'm just halving my dosage.

I'd be interested to hear how others are getting on, given it all feels a bit new and the long-term aspects of weight maintenance are not yet much talked about.

Morning all, welcome @FarriersGirl . Carbs are definitely a struggle for me too. I find they are particularly addictive!

Monday is weigh in day for me and I have maintained again. I've managed to do that with religiously logging all my calories as well. The 1.25 dose definitely seems to make enough of a difference for me at the moment.

Monday weigh-in for me, and I am the same as last week (which is less than the two weeks previously. Been off MJ for over a month now and in that time my average weekly weight has gone down a little bit.

I am not logging calories, I am eating what I want but still probably smaller portions than I was - my hunger has returned to what it was pre-MJ but I don't overeat, don't like the feeling.

MargoLivebetter · 27/01/2025 10:43

Great weigh-in news @SnacklessWonder . That is good to hear that you still don't want to overeat.

Hi everyone - my mum is currently paying Numan £229 a month for Mounjaro 5mg. It's a lot of money for her to keep paying now that she's reached her goal weight but is pretty certain that she'd pile on the pounds again if she comes off it. Having done a bit of googling I can see there are lots of cheaper suppliers out there - would it be easy for Mum to change pharmacy at this stage? She's worried that she'll have to upload photos again and obviously now Mum is slim and just maintaining a steady weight, she's worried she'll be declined by a new pharmacy.

IrisPallida · 27/01/2025 20:22

It will be fine, as long as the pharmacy supports maintenance. She just needs proof of her previous prescription - a photo of her last MJ box with her name etc on it would do in most cases. She will need to provide photo ID as well. Or a screenshot of the MJ letters sent by her pharmacy to her GP from her NHS app.

I didn't know that Numan continue prescribing once you get to goal? What is their policy?

RedPandaFluff · 27/01/2025 21:53

Thanks @IrisPallida - I'll try to help Mum find a suitable new pharmacy. As for what Numan's policy is in relation to maintenance, sorry, I don't know - I just had a fairly brief conversation with my Mum about it and then happened to see this thread so thought I'd ask!

Cantbesure · 27/01/2025 21:56

@RedPandaFluff 9
On the oushk support page on FB Hira has posted an update on their maintenance plans. They want evidence of the last 3 months of prescriptions to go into maintenance if you are a healthy BMI. It's £127 for 5mg.

RedPandaFluff · 28/01/2025 07:01

Oh wow that's a huge saving - my mum would be thrilled with that, thank you, @Cantbesure!

MaintainingWithMJ · 28/01/2025 09:44

Thanks for the thread OP@MargoLivebetter . It's lovely to see everyone maintaining or trying to maintain - with or without MJ, I hope we all succeed!

I started last February and have been maintaining since November. I'm maintaining with MJ for several reasons: One being that I'm on meds that cause weight gain as side effects (the reason I became obese in the first place); Two, for other unexpected health benefits I get from being on MJ such as no more sleep apnea, snoring and bruxism (I've not had to use my mouth guard since about two weeks into starting MJ. Prior to that, I used it everyday or I'd suffer the consequences). I have a couple of minor sleep issues as well that MJ seems to have dealt with and given me better sleep quality (although a certain high dose at one point gave me horrible insomnia so I had to go down).

I also have IBS - mixed, but MJ has made me more regular. I now have a bit of constipation but not anywhere near as bad as it used to be; I almost rarely have diarrhoea now.

My acid reflux that wasn't fully controlled with medication now behaves with MJ in addition to my meds. I very rarely need to take the extra tablets for bad days.

MJ has also stabilised my blood sugar and metabolism as they were out of whack. Food noise is rarely present; I can eat and be satisfied well before any damage is done. Every once in a while, I get extremely hungry or a bit of unusual food noise and once I eat, I'm fine for the rest of the time. I don't know why that happens but it's not often enough to be a problem - I assume it's my body needing a bit more extra than it has and I'm fine feeding it when it needs it rather than eating just for the sake of it.

Generally MJ has only added to my quality of life so I can't be without it now.

I eat healthy, eat less, basically no snacking, exercise as much as I can considering some health conditions I have, including fibromyalgia (I have a treadmill and exercise plate at home that I use when I'm able to). I was very active prior to illness and enjoyed exercising.

My maintenance strategy is to have the right dose that will enable MJ to remain stable in my system while giving me the same health benefits but with low-medium appetite suppression and low food noise. I was in the science field in my former life so I manage to find the right doses and schedule that help with this (I won't go into specifics as I don't want to give 'medical ideas/advice' but basically, I'll say that it's not always the same dose each jab time).

I have a maintenance weight range which means a leeway of 4lbs (or roughly 2kg) from my goal weight. As long as my weight doesn't fluctuate past 4lbs loss or gain at any time from my goal weight, I'm fine. If it does, I have to actively do something about it so it doesn't start creeping up/down - so either increase or reduce my calories again to get back to my goal weight or into my maintenance weight range. I feel this will help me not to fear gaining and losing the odd pound or two here and there or obsess over calorie counting until it's necessary, as long as I'm still (casually) mindful of what I eat.

Somehow I didn't realise how much I'd gained until...I did! Nothing worked to shift the weight until I found MJ. I needed to lose 4 stone to get to my former weight but I went further and lost 6 stone to get to my ideal weight which is right in the middle of 'healthy weight' for me, according to the nhs bmi calculator. I can't remember the last time I was this weight, probably before DC. BMI is 21. I hope to never go out of the healthy weight range again.

I'm still ordering my pens as normal and I go up or down as needed. My highest dose was 10mg. I currently order either a 2.5mg or 5mg pen but I'm not limited to those if I need to go up. I mainly use Cloud Pharmacy now but also use a couple of other providers if they're more affordable when I need to order. I don't need to specifically 'go on a maintenance plan' with anyone as long as they allow me to keep ordering at a healthy weight. I just want to carry on doing my own thing and know they're there to help whenever I have an issue or question.

My GP records show that I'm on Mounjaro and I spoke with my GP about it when I started. We were trying to find a solution to my weight gain prior to that and my GP suggested GLP-1 medication as one of the options but couldn't prescribe. I did my own research before I chose Mounjaro. So far, it's still working out. I'll see how my maintenance strategy goes by the end of the year and re-evaluate if needed.🤞

MargoLivebetter · 28/01/2025 12:52

Welcome @MaintainingWithMJ . Fantastic weight loss. You must be so pleased with yourself. I'm glad you've seen so many added benefits being on MJ as well. It is such a mixed bag for those using it. Sounds like you have a well thought through plan for maintenance as well. Keep us posted.

OP posts:
MaintainingWithMJ · 28/01/2025 15:48

@MargoLivebetter Thanks, it's been a wild ride but an amazing journey. I'm lucky to have had no serious side effects because this was the only solution left! I almost thought it was too good to be true while I was looking it up at first but I'm happy that I went for it anyway. The extra benefits make it even more worth it.

It's good to have this thread to keep up with others maintaining as well. X

NewYear0Me · 29/01/2025 07:09

Sounds like you have done really well sussing out what works for you @MaintainingWithMJ I hope it continues to go well
I was reflecting that I’ve also had several other benefits on MJ not just the weight loss that I hope they don’t go once the drug leaves my system. I’m off reflux meds completely, I sleep so much better in general, my joint pain (thanks p-menopause) is 80% reduced and was within a week of starting mj . I’m assuming that is linked to overall reduced inflammation in my body as eating alot less sugar. My brain fog was reduced too, mj having far more impact than my HRT was having despite being on HRT for 8yrs now. I’ve been able to increase my exercise now although I was exercising a lot before I was slower less nimble carrying the weight.

MargoLivebetter · 29/01/2025 08:50

Glad to hear of the positive effects you have had too @NewYear0Me .

I would say I've had a mixed bag. I think I'm a 'super responder', as I had such savage appetite repression and general distaste for food at 2.5. I never managed to take more than that and even 1.25 has some effect for me as well. It has given me acid reflux, something I've not really had before. I definitely felt more weary on it and have noticed an uptick in energy levels since dropping down to 1.25.

On the plus side, I have seen a big improvement in my inflammatory arthritis. I'm not sure if that is the MJ, the weight loss or because I'm eating less sugary and carby food, but whatever it is, I'm very grateful. I have/had IBS and my symptoms have completely disappeared!

It has also forced me to confront my emotional eating and actually deal with my emotions. A beneficial side effect of this is that I find Pilates and Yoga really helpful as something calming to do, which in turn means that I am doing more exercise - which is a massive win win! Obviously, even more beneficial is not stuffing my face with biscuits, cake, buttery toast etc every time I have to deal with something upsetting or stressful!!!!! 😆

I know Friday is weigh in day for some people. How are you all doing?

I'm trying to go without tracking every calorie I eat. I made a mistake in one of my earlier posts and put with tracking, when actually it should have been without tracking. I'm going to be interested to see how its gone this week, because I feel like I've eaten more. I weigh on Mondays, so a few days to go yet.

OP posts:
FarriersGirl · 31/01/2025 10:02

Morning..I weighed today and am 9st 9lbs which is down 1 1/2 lbs down on last week. I am aiming to maintain between 10st and 9st 10lbs so will aim to eat a bit more over the weekend.

MargoLivebetter · 31/01/2025 10:11

That's great @FarriersGirl . Are you calorie counting?

OP posts:
KrankyKumquat · 31/01/2025 12:05

@MargoLivebetter
Another half a pound off for me this week so now 10.0.4/BMI 20.7. I'm determined not to drop below 10st so there's not a lot of room to manoeuvre now. I've been on 5mg (out of a 7.5mg pen) for 3 weeks, having reduced gradually from 10mg over a couple of months, during which time I've lost a stone in total. So, the drugs are definitely still working! I've tried to up my calories but, although weight fluctuates during the week by a pound or so, overall trajectory is still downwards, albeit by just a little now. So, tomorrow I'll be doing 4mg. I've got a 5mg pen on order as my pharmacy expects you to order every 6 weeks maximum so I'm saving a bit of money by counting clicks but have to be careful not to overdo the length of time I use a pen (I'm personally comfortable with 6 doses which is 1 week over the 30 days).

MargoLivebetter · 31/01/2025 12:31

Well done @KrankyKumquat . Sounds like a few of us going to be trying to hover around the 10st mark. I'm about that too now and trying to find the sweet point where I don't gain or lose each week.

OP posts:
KrankyKumquat · 31/01/2025 12:55

@MargoLivebetter
Interesting that you've got down to a sub-2.5 dose, I'm thinking I may end up there as well. I was a very good responder from the first day of using so thinking this may relate to maintenance dosing too.

MargoLivebetter · 31/01/2025 13:13

@KrankyKumquat for me 1.25 definitely reduces food noise and keeps appetite very manageable. I've got 10 weeks left at this dose. I'm really hoping that gives me plenty of time to work out what maintenance eating is going to look like for the rest of my life.

OP posts:
VioletsHeart · 31/01/2025 15:10

A lb up from last week. Still sub 9 which is the goal. I’m still on 5mg for now.

I had a week of eating a bit more than usual, in a somewhat experimental manner. Need to pull back a bit I think. Very much super early days of maintenance and plan on giving my self space and time to work out what works.

CoolRubyDreamer · 31/01/2025 17:14

I've stayed the same again this weekend with an increase of calories to try and find what my maintenance looks like. I'm still tracking calories daily but not obsessing if I'm over or under. Feeling pretty content with how things are at the moment!

tobee · 31/01/2025 18:18

I've not read the full thread and am not currently on any injectables but very interested in this tool.

I think really soon maintenance guidance needs to be given clearly. It should be a part of prescribing services that ALL of them prescribe maintenance doses for life if necessary.

If people have difficulty living at a healthy weight in the past those difficulties are, in most cases, not just going to disappear.

I think this needs to be addressed by health department

tobee · 31/01/2025 18:20

Basically a dose (hopefully a pill soon) that people take in a similar way to blood pressure medication etc; dose amounts as required by the individual so they tick along at target weight. Just like I tick along at target blood pressure level and thyroid level etc etc

MargoLivebetter · 31/01/2025 20:59

Thank you for the update @VioletsHeart and @CoolRubyDreamer. Hopefully as the weeks tick by it will get easier to know better what can be eaten to stay roughly stable.
