I'm not being goady here.

Just feel that on some days I should totally do this but then on others it's nuts.

I don't know how you can't worry about damage to your system.

I'm 3st overweight

Turning 35 in December. I've officially spent 10 years as a fat person, and I just can't yo-yo diet and fail, and feel shit for the rest of my life until I die.

My mum died a few years ago from complications of type 2 diabetes. All she did was stump her toe on a sharp rock, it wasn't healing and she was found to have peripheral arterial disease, the infection spread and she died. She was 56.

I'm not pre-diabetic, but the chances are I will be soon if I don't sort myself out. I want to be alive for my grandchildren.

Oh that's awful. I'm so sorry..

For those on the fence about taking the weight loss medication - make sure it's a sturdy fence ! OP - people will feel unsure if they are doing the right thing even if they have started weight loss medication. You reminding them of known (and potentially unknown) side effects / risks will be triggering. I personally would like to see more information about long term risks of the medication.

Are you on the medication?

I only ask because I am and I’ve never felt unsure about being on it and just as I don’t give any attention to the potential problems of other medications I’m on I don’t give any attention to those said to be a possibility whilst on Mounjaro.

I’m also unsure what the poster was on about, us all being triggered as we were unsure. I’m as sure as, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for my health and all I see is post after post of folks saying the same thing.

i think some folks are so resentful they want to think this nonsense,

Movinghouseatlast · 14/01/2025 16:44

Because of the risks associated with obesity and because it has been in use safely for 20 years.

I think @Bogginsthe3rd ’s comment about a sturdy fence gives a pretty clear indication what they are on about. Always best on these threads to just ignore anyone who is just here to sneer at overweight people. Their views on WLI are irrelevant to anyone who cares about the wellbeing of overweight people.

Redlightbulb · 14/01/2025 16:54

I had lost 6 stone in the couple of years prior to Covid and was nearly at goal.
Fast forward 3/4 years and I had gained 9 stone back.
I had never been so fat and my mental health was in the toilet.
I couldn't get out of the current binge cycle I was in and had very little will power to change.
I had been lucky to avoid obesity related conditions but this wouldn't last forever. and was a ticking timebomb to get diabetes at least.
The side effects of me sticking to that self destruct path is nothing compared to what I have had on MJ and I have had side effects on MJ but nothing too serious.

PigInAHouse · 14/01/2025 14:29

I guess we can turn this around… what’s making you ignore the potential health risks of being obese, and not do anything about it?

I eat healthily
I exercise
And I'm considering these drugs.
How is that ignoring it?

That’s a positive, how much have you lost and how long have you been doing it for? You might not need them if you’re already doing so well.

Why do you think people on WLI '' ignore potential health issues'

Whatever makes you think that? Seem you have a very strange idea of people on WLI that's not reflected in reality

In exactly the same way that you think that those of us who have considered the health risks and decided it’s worth taking the medication are ignoring them 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think @PigInAHouse has just demonstrated very neatly why the original phrasing of your question garnered some slightly chippy, defensive reactions Grin

BringOnTheSunshineNow · 14/01/2025 17:50

I think many people are very chippy!

Thanks for the chat to those who have shared 👋

@BringOnTheSunshineNow you asked, people were honest, shared personal details and you criticised. Your original phrasing 'ignored' was not ideal either. Your framing began critical and continued that way. If it's not for you that's absolutely fine.

If you are not the type of person to not consider potential side effects of any medication I'm sure you didn't consider side effects of weight loss medications either of course. Weird flex.

DecayingRelic · 14/01/2025 16:15

I need to lose about one and half stone, I think my BMI is around 27/28

I decided not to get WLI, I do not like the risk of side effects and longterm issues that might arise

I also do not know what this food noise is that I read about, does it mean you are always thinking about food? I do not do this, I only eat 3 meals a day, no snacks, I do get hungry between meals though , and I maybe have some cake and choc after tea, I think I maybe need to ditch that bad habit, I have a bit of a belly that I would like to get rid of😄

You wouldn't be eligible unless you have an eligible health or ethnicity risk factor you haven't mentioned.

Why on earth would you assume the poster is 'not the type of person to consider potential side effects of any medication '

It's far more likely the poster can critically appraise the research studies and can weight up risks versus benefits to come to a conclusion they are confident with

Unlike the OP of this thread who has difficulty doing the above

I guess it's because they literally said, "just as I don’t give any attention to the potential problems of other medications". Your critical appraisal needs a bit of work!

FerretChops · 14/01/2025 21:03

I don't know tbh. I was really opposed to it all early last year and was adamant I wouldn't take MJ. Too worried about being sick and side effects

But I then saw a friend doing really well on them and thought I'd just try it as I genuinely couldn't lose more than a few lbs on my own. Menopausal, was snoring so badly my husband had to sleep in a spare bedroom, my knees hurt, I had terrible heart burn and I couldn't wear the clothes I love to wear - I really enjoy fashion and beauty and work in the arena so it was just bloody rubbish

It's been 9 months now and it's been lost a total of 5 and a half stone and now have a BMI of about 23. No side effects of note.

I do occasionally wonder about long term issues but the way I was going, id have given myself diabetes and high cholesterol at some point soon

Pumpkinforever · 14/01/2025 21:45

Since taking MJ I haven’t been to the chippy 😂

There’s nothing weird at all about taking medication knowing they can have side effects whilst not going into the ins and outs of them. The bottom line is if you don’t take them you’ll die or become unwell but there is far less chance of you dying or becoming unwell because of the medication.

it’s as simple as that.

last but not least - I recognise your name as someone who frequents the boards being antagonistic and I think I had one of your comments removed on another (non weight loss) thread recently. I’m going to be ignoring you from now on in as it really is the best way to deal with you.

mumwheresmyribena · 16/01/2025 14:22

I don't think many people "ignore" the risks, they do an informal risk analysis and take into account the overwhelming risks of being overweight.

I took Ozempic back in 2023 and was well on the road to a "normal" weight when it became almost impossible to get. By the time Wegovy and Mounjaro became available I'd moved out of if the UK to a country where Ozempic was not available for weightloss and wegovy/mounjaro weren't available at all.

Over the intervening 18 months I've put quite a bit of the weight back on, it was a very stressful and unstable 12 months and I also had a car accident which meant I wasn't as mobile as I would have liked for 3 months. But I've spent all of those 18 months at less weight than I originally was. As overweight and (latterly) obese not morbidly obese and obese; that's actually a big gain health-wise. I'm still not near the weight I was before I started Ozempic, but still have some to make up and more to lose.

Mounjaro has recently become available here. It has to be prescribed by a doctor either in person or by video link. It isn't available on this country's NHS, the cost is fairy constant with what I've seen in the UK. I had a GP appointment last week and the guy at pharmacy (because you get a standard prescription to take to the pharmacy) did a double take at the cost, especially as I opted to take the first 2 months supply in one transaction.
