I'm not being goady here.

Just feel that on some days I should totally do this but then on others it's nuts.

I don't know how you can't worry about damage to your system.

I'm 3st overweight

I didn’t decide to ignore the risks, and I don’t think most taking the injections have ignored them either.
I decided that the risk to my physical and mental health of remaining obese was greater to me than the risk of taking the drugs.

i lost 3 stone and the benefits ( knee pain gone , I can exercise, I don’t snore) etc are so much more than potential risks that you mentioned . I read the full research paper when deciding whether to not to do it.

See those sound like great benefits. Have you come off it yet?

Everything has a risk. Why worry about something that may never happen. Most of those side effects you listed are rare and obviously it would affect users who have pre-existing health conditions more than those who don't. Think about all those who die from flu and paracetamol and other medication use.

I've been on mounjaro 3.5 months and never had a single side effect, as someone who had inflammation, insulin resistance, pre-diabetic, high blood pressure, IBS it has reversed all these for me. Blood pressure went from 145/92 to 110/78 in weeks. No more aching muscles, clicks joints, breathlessness and that's only after a stone loss. I was 13 stone starting BMI 31.1 and now I'm 11 stones 9lbs bmi 29.6.
I'm a registered health professional Biomedical scientist manager, it was a no brainer for me. Don't let your fears win.

Edited

Thank you for sharing your progress. Sounds amazing.

I'm also on the fence about using them and some days think that's it and others there's no way I'd do it!
For me though it's more about side effects and long term cost or what will happen when I stop taking them.
I have a bmi of 32 so would qualify. Long term being obese is worse for me and that in itself is a massive risk

I feel the same x

Overlook. Live with. Take in board. Risk... however you say it, you must have weighed it up and made a decision.

Yes, as I said, I carefully considered the risks (the opposite of ignoring them) and decided that for me, the risk of staying obese was greater than the risk of taking the medication.

InfoSecInTheCity · 13/01/2025 21:09

The current health problems I was experiencing.

I was obese, had been diagnosed with T2 diabetes high cholesterol and had constant knee pain.

Now (4 months down the line) I am overweight and only 11 lbs off being healthy BMI, my HbA1C has reduced from 11% to 7.2% and I'm having a repeat test tomorrow to see if my diabetes is in remission and whether my cholesterol has reduced. Knee pain is also improving, not gone but better.

BringOnTheSunshineNow · 13/01/2025 20:48

@Luminousalumnus why is it tizzy ish to consider health risk?

Because you are ignoring the more pressing health risk of obesity

BringOnTheSunshineNow · 13/01/2025 21:23

@Searchingforthelight I'm obviously not ignoring them or I wouldn't be considering taking them.

I'm just hearing a lot of noise on both sides.

OP posts:
BringOnTheSunshineNow · 13/01/2025 21:24

I'm not someone who takes a lot of drugs. As a rule. I'd take paracetamol quite rarely for example.

OP posts:
lostinthememory · 13/01/2025 21:26

I was 319 pounds at age 24.

I couldn't chase after my nieces when I took them out, I couldn't enjoy summer because I was fat and uncomfortable. I was so depressed I wanted to die.

I trust in medication and science. I don't often take painkillers because I don't often need them, but I trust them when I need them. I trust antibiotics and painkillers and everything else that's on the market.

I don’t know why people are being so defensive and nasty. It’s ok to be wary and to question injecting yourself with something that does things to your hormones and stops you eating. And we are still waiting for long term studies. Of course it feels bizarre. As others have said, it’s weighing up the cost of your obesity/comorbid problems. It’s a possible health issues vs definite health issues being overweight.

One thing is to make sure once you’re on it you really overhaul your diet and lifestyle so that you don’t have to keep doing it again. Good luck.

If pp are being defensive it’s probably because anyone who has been on this board for a little while has got a bit sick of the faux naive, disingenuous posts which in many cases are started for pure goadiness by people who just want to come and poke at the fatties.

I think OP is in earnest but the phrasing of her initial post is very unfortunate. Suggesting that people who have chosen to treat their medical condition of obesity with GLP1 medication have ‘ignored’ the potential risks is pretty inflammatory, and I appreciate that she has acknowledged this.

How hard have you tried to get the weight off?

For most people, WLI is a last resort. But maybe you're not there yet.

BringOnTheSunshineNow · 13/01/2025 21:33

This is a very good point indeed @Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice

I keep thinking if i don't do loads of exercise anyway then i'll just go all flabby and lose muscle. I have started weights and tried low carbing which feels great but is hard work sustaining.

But you need to change habits anyway right?

OP posts:
BringOnTheSunshineNow · 13/01/2025 21:35

@VelociraptorsVelociRapping I'm a fatty! Why would I want to poke fun at anyone?!

I really want to lose weight. I'm tempted by the drugs. But not wholly convinced it's for me.

So I'm interested in talking to people who have made that decision.

It’s a personal decision.
based on the research I’ve done, those more serious things on your list are rare.
the common things like diarrhea etc are transient and manageable and generally stop if you stop the meds.

if being 3 stone overweight isn’t affecting your health (mental and physical) that much then maybe it’s not worth it, it’s certainly no picnic and not as easy and effortless (for me) as some make out.

But my extra weight was putting my health at risk (blood pressure, risk of stroke) and my life long struggle with binge eating and yoyo dieting massively affected my mental health, so it’s worth it for me.

Silm chance of some lasting health problems with it, almost certainty or very high chance of chronic health issues without it.

Overlook. Live with. Take in board. Risk... however you say it, you must have weighed it up and made a decision.

Echoing a few other posters, whilst also understanding your thinking OP!

the fear of the risks of the fact I’m obese would be my biggest motivator, however rather than the risk of the injection side effects, I’m more concerned that it’s only a temporary solution anyway. I’m assuming we can’t be on it for life, so if the only reason it works is because is suppressed our appetite then I know I will gain it all back - plus more probably.

I’m curious to know if anybody has managed to keep it off!

so far I don’t qualify for it, I’m on tier 2 weight management but I’m sure I’ll be eligible soon.

BringOnTheSunshineNow · 13/01/2025 21:40

I'm curious about maintenance too @AmusedBouched but there don't seem to be many people talking about this. Unless I've totally missed them...

@BringOnTheSunshineNow I am flabby and saggy, I've lost just over 3 stone in 4 months and have more to lose and my poor skin has dealt with 30 years of being fat and yo-yo weight loss so chances are it will never be toned. that would be the case whether I lost weight by diet alone, or with the addition of WLIs so it's something I'm just having to deal with.

I know that over time there will be some improvements, I know that building muscle will be the best way to help that improvement so I'm trying to add in strength training, went to my first "functional fitness" class at the leisure centre today and may never lift my arms above my head again based on how my muscles are feeling, so I'm thinking that whole building muscle thing will need to be a gradual improvement 😂

We can only do the best that we can and make decisions based on the information we have and our experiences. I've been obese since I was 11, I'm 41 now. I've tried every diet going and they haven't worked, I was getting fatter and unhealthier year on year, so I needed to try something different.

BringOnTheSunshineNow · 13/01/2025 21:42

Thanks @12purplepencils that sounds entirely reasonable

Certain providers offer maintenance, I've picked one who does and is really interested in supporting you with maintenance.

Some people lessen their dose and eventually stop. Some pharmacies are now recognising that some people will require it as a life long medication and they are offering life long support providing you are still suitable to take it (e.g. you can lower to a maintenance dose and aren't continuing to loose weight in an unhealthy way).
