Mounjaro effect on bipolar

Is anyone taking mountjaro who has bipolar? I’ve been on it a week (GP knows), and I feel like it’s shut off all the extra noise in my head. It’s very strange. I’ve read some people with ADHD feel this (I may actually have ADHD anyway) but just wondered if anyone with bipolar is finding it too.

I don't have bipolar and I don't have a diagnosis for ADHD, although I do have what might be considered to be ADHD traits. I have always experienced a pretty much continual internal monologue, which can be brutally harsh at times. Mounjaro has calmed this down considerably. This, and the killing of the wine witch, is why I am intending to be on this drug for ever, if at all possible.

BartholomewsCat · 13/01/2025 13:36

Thank you for replying, yes that is exactly what it is for me. The harsh internal monologue is quiet - I still have one but it seems ‘calmed’. Maybe they will start prescribing it for other things!

I was very depressed and anxious before I started Mounjaro. It's like it's turned all of it off and I'm just happy

jimmyateworld · 13/01/2025 13:41

Just my experience but mj made me really depressed, I barely had any motivation and there was definitely a lack of enjoyment in my usual day to day ! I only noticed it when I went up to 5mg though. Depression is listed as a side effect. It's important to note I do have existing mental health issues but I've never had depression before mounjaro.

I don't have bipolar but recurrent depression and I'm on similar meds, olanzapine and fluoxetine.

I'm finding similar and a bit calmer / less anxious. Glad I can take it with the meds which can cause weight gain.

Hey. Do you mind me asking if you’re on lithium?

Hi,
Yes I am! And sertraline and lamotrigine.

I’ve been on mountjaro about 7 weeks now, and my head is just calm.

Thank you. I’ve been rejected by medexpress because of Lithium. Do you mind me asking who accepted you? (And did you tell them your meds you was on)

BartholomewsCat · 24/02/2025 09:34

Med express. I did talk it through with my gp who was fine with it. I don’t think there was a tick box for lithium when i started (or maybe there was and I ignored it). You do need regular blood tests to check the toxicity, but in my case I’m on the lowest lithium dose as maintenance so v unlikely to be a problem. Honestly I think it’s done more for my state of mind than any of the bipolar drugs.

Am I bit late to this? I am bipolar, on lithium, duloxetine and pregablin. I have just gone up to 5mg of mounjaro. My depression is just awful. It crept up on me. I’m trying to work out whether a life event that happened around the same time was the spark that set it off or mounjaro. I gained huge amounts of weight because of my meds and I was so happy that I was losing weight. Bloody mental health. Today I want to curl up under my desk and hide from everyone

Hi, I'm on olanzapine and fluoxetine - I think it is helping with food cravings (olanzapine is bad for that) and have lost 3 stone since September. I'm sorry to hear about the depression. I think it might have helped me a bit with that also. Hope it goes well for you too.

Sorry I re-read this, I hope it is not the MJ causing the depression. I guess it must be hard to tell. Kind thoughts, maybe best chat to the prescriber?

I don’t have bipolar but do have high anxiety and have had periods of depression - has been under control for a good while - I take a low dose of sertraline. I have ADHD, but don’t take any meds for this. I’ve been very happy/content recently - a good year with no blips at all. I started Wegovy 2 weeks ago and my mood has nosedived - actually very bad, possibly the worst I’ve ever been, so I am stopping. My mental health is far more important than losing a couple of stone (all I was aiming for). It’s the only thing I’ve changed and it’s especially unusual at this time of year, as spring and sunny days give me a spring in my step, but instead I’m having intrusive thoughts about cutting my wrists, so that’s the end of my Wegovy journey.

My mood was impacted negatively by Mountjaro and that along with persistent physical side effects meant I quit it fairly quickly. You're not alone.

Love this. My inner voice and wine witch is literally ruining my life
