Minimum calories you shouldn't go below

What is the minimum number of calories you should consume? My BMR is just under 1800 calories a day and, because of illness, activity only adds about 200 calories to that. So to lose 1lb a week I need to consume 1500 calories a day. I'm concerned that that maybe very low. What do you think?

GoodByeBelly · 07/01/2025 21:39

That doesn't sound that low to me. I have to consume less than 1500 to loose any weight at all. If I stick at 1500 I'd maintain.....

thesaskedminger · 07/01/2025 21:45

It's not very low, it's a pretty usually number for many women trying to lose weight.

SilenceInside · 07/01/2025 21:48

That's not very low at all. Very low calorie diets are usually around 800 cals a day. So 1500 is a normal calorie deficit for sustainable weight loss.

LostMyLanyard · 07/01/2025 21:49

It sounds perfectly normal to me! I need much lower than that to lose weight. O

HorrorFan81 · 07/01/2025 21:52

I'm currently very inactive and aiming for 1400 a day which i would say is the high end.

Gettingslimmer · 07/01/2025 21:53

I’m active and aim for 1400, I lose about two pounds a week. 1500 isn’t low.

mylittledoggie · 07/01/2025 21:55

I aim for about 1500 calories a day and was told on here that I have an eating disorder!

Huh? Can you link to that? Loads of weight loss threads and most people are 1500 or below.

InfoSecInTheCity · 07/01/2025 22:05

Where large amounts of weight loss are needed, medically managed programmes advocate for 800 calories a day for a limited period of around 12 weeks. So 1500 is not going to be too low, although it will probably feel restrictive if you've previously eaten a lot more.

I'm 5ft 8, 176lb currently and MyFitnessPal set my goal as no more than 1600 a day.i don't usually eat more than 1400 as that's enough for me to feel full and to get a range of different foods every day so I'm getting nutrients and a good mix of carbs, proteins fat and fibre.

'On here' are opinions, that's all. I would ignore and look for a reputable source/.

1100 is the figure that weight loss resources have as an absolute minimum, of you are short, inactive or don't have much to lose then you need to accept a slower weight loss.
Although personally I think the 1100 is an impossible amount to sustain and at that point I'd rather either be fat or take more exercise.

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 07/01/2025 22:11

Your BMR is fairly high - mine is similar but I am very tall. Most women have much lower BMRs than us. 1500kcal is absolutely fine.

Remember that your BMR reduces as you lose weight and there is less of you to move around. Mine was over 2100 kcal at my heaviest.

Mabelmable · 07/01/2025 22:15

Michael Moseley published a book about 800cal per day.
Worth catching up on his ideas I think.

I'm eating 900-1050 most days and I work too. Can't really stomach much more. I was 13 stones when I started and now 11 stones 9lb and bmi 29.5 5ft 3" so I can get away with less calories. Suppression is very high at the moment

I’m five foot two and would need to have max 1200cals to loose weight and around 1500/1600 for maintenance, I would love to be able to regularly eat more but if I do I’d put on weight which I try not to as I hate dieting

Mysticmaiden2024 · 07/01/2025 22:32

My tdee on low activity is around 1661 so that's why I eat less

Actually it's sedentary but I have an office job mainly, occasionally stood up all day with jobs, though I drive 2.5hrs a day commute and walk around 5k steps a day

Gettingslimmer · 08/01/2025 06:14

I’m also surprised the op’s bmr is so high. An averagely active woman is about 1500.

i think though being very muscular can increase it, as well as pregnancy etc.

The James Smith Academy free calculator is better than the MFP one, do that and see what it says

Yeah this website can be mental. There were/are also people claiming they maintain on 600-800cal...
I found MN very mentally unhealthy when I was losimg weight tbh. It's riddem with various eating disorders and people in denial about having them

mylittledoggie · 08/01/2025 08:39

I'm not going to link it, became a bit nasty because I wouldn't see a GP! They were saying that because I'm quite light already and do a lot of exercise.

WeAllHaveWings · 08/01/2025 09:02

I now aim for an average of 1200 a day (over the week), some days are much less and others much more. Some weeks, depending on how much MJ is suppressing my appetite (it varies), I am under the 1200 average, others over.

As long as I stay under an average of 2lb/week weight loss I am ok with that. 2lb/week loss is usually considered rapid loss, but I started at a high BMI so it is considered more moderate.

Ah ok, I don’t think that’s the op;s situation.
