I’m 8 weeks in and haven’t told a soul (1.4 stone down). My DH has noticed how much less I’m eating and I’ve just told him I’m on the 5:2 diet, which I did successfully a few years back.

OP posts:
TimeForATerf · 30/12/2024 07:52

I’ve kept it quiet for six months, DD knows and is sworn to secrecy and GP, that’s it.

I’m four stone down and at target so coming off it now, last 5mg taken Friday but I want to go into the NY without it, see how I get on. I do have a couple of spare pens with use by dates of Sept 25 and Jan 26 which I intend to keep and use if I struggle.

people have asked me how I’ve lost the weight and I told them eating less, not drinking alcohol and walking the dog everyday, which isn’t a lie.

EveryDayisFriday · 30/12/2024 07:58

My DH and kids know. I'm eating less and often can't face cooking. I would say if asked but I don't think anyone would actually comment.

TidyDancer · 30/12/2024 07:59

Outside of my home, a couple of friends know - one is now using it herself and the other is getting her first delivery this week! My GP knows too because MedExpress wrote to him but that's it.

I have periodically thought about telling others but I can't be arsed to deal with the judgemental bullshit and wholly incorrect opinions about it being the lazy/easy option. There's a couple of other friends who I won't lie to if they outright asked but I have quite a bit of weight to lose still so I'd imagine it'll be a while before I start getting major questions.

I guess I don't really see it as anyone else's business tbh.

Sorry unable to take my Dr hat off, please make sure someone knows if you get hospitalised, it has significant implications for anaesthetics and we change the way we get people to sleep that are on them as they need altered fasting guidelines and are at risk of regurgitation of undigested food in their lungs as they go off to sleep, which can be fatal

MrsNessaSmithy · 30/12/2024 08:01

I started in May and am 50lb down and have not told a soul including my dh.
If people ask I tell them I have been calorie counting which is true.

I have hidden my pens under the onions in the bottom of the fridge,

We recently had 2 weeks away and I reduced the dose and ate more food but I know I can continue and get to my goal. I am only 14lb away from it now this drug is life changing.

Seaitoverthere · 30/12/2024 08:04

My DH, cousin and 2 friends know, people I know. It isn’t anyone else’s business , I don’t go around discussing the other medication I am and this is no different. I am taking it on the advice of my rheumatologist (though obviously he can’t prescribe it ) so I don’t see it as any different to the other drugs I take.

BigSilly · 30/12/2024 08:46

I don't think IRL they are really in the public consciousness anything like they are on MN where everyone seems to be talking about them.
I didn't tell anyone for about 5 months, then told my adult daughter who lives at home because I thought someone should know incase I have a health emergency. Later I had to tell dh who found a pen and thought someone had dropped an epipen!

Shrinkingrose · 30/12/2024 08:55

Husband, adult kids, best friend, and doctor. No one else, and not my other friends or colleagues.

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 30/12/2024 09:01

DH knows as I wanted someone to know in case of an emergency
Other than that, I didn't really tell anyone for months as it didn't come up. My PT knows as she noticed the difference and was surprised that I was suddenly losing weight and I gave told a few friends and colleagues who are in the same camp as I was before starting MJ of exercising, watching what they eat but continuing to gain weight.

Onand · 30/12/2024 11:31

Each to their own but once more people start owning and embracing the fact they’re taking control of their health and lives by using these products the stigma will disappear. If an overweight person asks, are you going to lie to them and let them believe they’re a failure because they can’t lose weight by calorie counting or working out?

There is no shame in saying YES I’M LOSING WEIGHT BY A TINY INJECTION EVERY WEEK AND NO I WONT HAVE DESSERT, THANK YOU.

12purplepencils · 30/12/2024 11:34

I do understand what you’re saying but I HATE talking about my weight in any way. I have never been one to share what diet I’m on or what I’m doing, despite being a chronic over sharer in other ways. I don’t like people commenting on my body (negatively or positively) and am very private about it whether that’s been weight watchers, keto, or now the injections.

im sure it’s a bit messed up and I have been afraid of losing weight too quickly on these (I haven’t, but I wonder if that’s partly self sabotaging!) and it being too noticeable. It’s also why I want to maintain at 25-27 BMI and not go lower than that in case I can’t source the meds in future and inevitably balloon.

Goast · 30/12/2024 11:36

Not feeling comfortable or able to tell your own husband is really sad.

Would it not be in your medical notes, like blood thinners etc

Completely understand your point and thought process but please don’t let the what if’s and self sabotage hold you back, NO ONE is judging you.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 30/12/2024 11:39

DH knows and one friend at work, because I knew perfectly well she would also be considering them. I was right, she was planning to start after Christmas (I started in Nov).

Motnight · 30/12/2024 11:41

My GP, DD and DH know. A relative over Xmas more or less asked me if I was on WLI but I said (honestly) that I was eating more sensibly and healthily. My body is my business.

ChimneyRock · 30/12/2024 11:48

My dh knows and dd too. I went to my best friend for advice as she is a gastroenterologist and she also consulted with her nutritionist colleague on my behalf who said to go for it. The online pharmacy will have told my GP too. Wasn't planning on telling anyone else but I have now in fact discussed it with a colleague who's also taking it. That's probably enough people who know that will make it common knowledge!
Re: side effects (Mounjaro) - I haven't had any. I'm probably a little bit constipated but that's about it.
Am halfway to goal after 8 weeks.

Often not as most people buy it privately rather than via NHS routes

Even though the private companies often tell the GPs it won't pull through to your medication history as it's not the GPs themselves issuing it

Tohaveandtohold · 30/12/2024 16:19

I told my DH before I bought it. We don’t tell anyone else about our lives so this is not different. No one else knows. He’s always at the gym and plays a sport 3 times a week so I’ve been exercising with him before I started on MJ, just not really losing weight so it’s been easy to tell people that I just added diet to the exercises I’ve been doing. None of this is a lie, it’s just that MJ has made the diet part easier than if I was doing it alone. I’m noticeably slimmer and people are starting to comment and that’s what I just say when asked.

SilenceInside · 30/12/2024 16:24

That's not true in my case @Destiny123, each time my private prescription is issued a letter is sent to my GP. The admin staff at the GP upload the letter onto my record on the NHS app in the Documents section. Mounjaro is then listed, with the current dose level, on my current prescribed medications. It's listed as an Acute (short-term) medicine.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 29/12/2024 23:07

I'll go read it. Sick for a year sounds horrific 😬. Any hints how to get through it or avoid it??

I feel it's this or surgery which would mean lots of life changes so I will live with the side effects I just would rather not be sick for a year. I want a new job and so don't feel I'm presenting my best self!

Honestly throwing up just became the norm, it was ten minutes of pain for a lot of gain. I have had no issues on MJ at all.

I disagree. I asked receptionist at my GP for GP appointment and she asked me why. I told her that I wanted to repeat my blood tests and wanted to know if the medication I am currently on has had an impact. She literally glanced at the computer screen and knew straight away what medication I am on (Mounjaro). I am currently with Medexpress and previously with Zava and every time I agreed to inform my GP. I think it is important for them to know just in case you need urgent medical treatment and are unable to tell medical staff yourself.

My GP surgery which I’ve never visited (been very lucky health wise and have moved since having DCs over ten years’ ago) rang and left me a very stroppy message demanding I call to explain why I have ordered MJ despite them having no record of me being pre-diabetic. The message was sooooo judgemental in tone. Horrible.

Whaaaat? That is so bloody rude! I would definitely ring them back and give then proper bollocking! In my case, every time I used to go to GP with an issue, they would imply that it is related to my weight. Yet when I asked for help loosing weight, I wasn't getting any help bar a leaflet about healthy eating. Even when I struggled to breastfeed because my baby couldn't latch they blamed it on the size of my huge boobs (no one cared to check if tongue tie was an issue -it was!)

Lola3034 · 30/12/2024 17:00

Now they have no reason to complain, I am losing weight and hopefully my health issues will be treated seriously!
