I’m 8 weeks in and haven’t told a soul (1.4 stone down). My DH has noticed how much less I’m eating and I’ve just told him I’m on the 5:2 diet, which I did successfully a few years back.

Sorry unable to take my Dr hat off, please make sure someone knows if you get hospitalised, it has significant implications for anaesthetics and we change the way we get people to sleep that are on them as they need altered fasting guidelines and are at risk of regurgitation of undigested food in their lungs as they go off to sleep, which can be fatal

If someone is taking it legitimately then it would be on their notes at the GP's surgery.

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 30/12/2024 17:29

@MounjaroOnMyMind not necessarily. Many pharmacies make it optional for them to inform your gp.

FlatStanley50 · 30/12/2024 17:40

I haven’t told a soul though assume Medexpress have told my GP. DH was in denial about my weight (and his own), telling me I was fine even as I tipped into obese. Anyway I have now been on it since September, but at the same time resumed exercise and following a high protein meal plan so he thinks weight loss is down to that (which it is, Mounjaro just makes it easier to stick to). Side effects for me have been tiredness and feeling freezing cold. Nothing gastro other than after I first went from 2.5 to 3.75 I had a couple of days of diarrhoea. I am now BMI 25 and have about 10lb left to go. Very pleased with it. No one knows what other medication I am on, I don’t see why this should be any different. If someone overweight asked me though, I would tell them. So far no one has said a thing (and I am v short and have lost 2 stone and 2 dress sizes so I would imagine it is quite noticeable).

TwirlyPineapple · 30/12/2024 17:43

My husband knows but I haven't told anyone else. I don't intend to, although I probably wouldn't lie about it if I was asked. No one has mentioned my weight loss at all. I'm sure people probably suspect it though, as I've lost 80lbs in 8 months which I've never managed before. I did start a new job halfway through my time on them though, so people there haven't seen the full extent of the loss.

GreatTheCat · 30/12/2024 18:15

I lost 5. 5 stone half of last year and this year 'the normal way'. Noone has every asked me how I did it.

It's not. We can see gp medication history on a tab of the hospital system.

My mum is on it privately, there's zero mention of it anywhere on her NHS app (she's on it legit-ly had to give all her gp details etc when signed up

Destiny123 · 30/12/2024 19:04

SilenceInside · 30/12/2024 16:24

That's not true in my case @Destiny123, each time my private prescription is issued a letter is sent to my GP. The admin staff at the GP upload the letter onto my record on the NHS app in the Documents section. Mounjaro is then listed, with the current dose level, on my current prescribed medications. It's listed as an Acute (short-term) medicine.

Depends v much on how proactive your pharmacist and gp practice is... I've seen many many patients on it when I've asked what they take and nothing shows up on their gp drug history not free text entries. Those that are prescribed it for diabetes by their gp show up pretty much always, the weightloss use is far more variable/doesn't show

SilenceInside · 30/12/2024 19:05

@Destiny123 it's on my NHS app as I described. Plenty of prescribers notify GPs and GPs put it on patient's medication record. I get that your mum's records are not being updated by her GP but plenty of people's are.

I didn't say they all weren't. I just said please let your NOK know as a safety mechanism

SilenceInside · 30/12/2024 19:13

Tbf you said that "Even though the private companies often tell the GPs it won't pull through to your medication history as it's not the GPs themselves issuing it"

"It won't pull through to your medication history" was the bit I was disagreeing with.

I agree that having at least one person who knows what medication you're on is sometimes useful, especially if you haven't agreed to your GP being notified and it definitely isn't on your NHS record. And that person is present when you're incapacitated and admitted to hospital.

JamieFrasersSassenach · 30/12/2024 19:37

I've been on MJ since the start of August, I've lost just over 3 stone - about one more to go. I have told no-one.

My GP will know shortly as I am changing providers from Voy to Oushk (I chose not to let them know through Voy but there is no option not to with Oushk.)

The NHS blood donation service know because I told them when I donated blood - none of the nurses had a clue what I was talking about when I told them and had to go and look it up on their system.

I haven't told DH - I don't know why - maybe because I thought it might not work or might not agree with me initially and now it seems odd to suddenly tell him. He is aware that I am eating smaller portions, drinking less and cutting out crappy food so doesn't think it's odd that I've lost weight.

Anyone who asks me about my weight loss and how I am doing it gets told I have reduced my portion sizes, cut right back on alcohol and stopped eating crisps and other crap - all true.

If someone asked me outright if I'm using injections I would think carefully whether or not to be honest about it, but I have not heard a single person in my social or work circles even mention weight loss injections so I don't think it will happen.

I also take anti depressants and have done for years - no one knows I take those other than my GP, dentist, NHS blood donation service and DH so I don't think it's odd not to tell people.

I'm switching to Oushk because I want the option of a maintenance dose as the difference this medication has made to me is nothing short of amazing. It's not just the weight loss it's the lack of food noise, the confidence I have now to eat out - I have lost my 'fear of food'. It's been a complete game changer.

With regard to letting someone know in case of a medical emergency - I'll just trust that it will be on my medical record going forwards or that I will be conscious enough to tell a medic myself should I become that unwell.

@FatGirlDosing if my GP surgery do anything like that I'll be straight back at them with "yes and I hopefully wont get to be pre-diabetic now because I'm using it to cut my risk - I have PCOS, raised cholesterol, family history of type 2 diabetes and was clinically obese!!" Honestly they are unbelievable sometimes.

Tapsz · 30/12/2024 22:55

I haven’t told anyone yet, and may never, though that may change who knows.

I have no partner, and I have a quite opinionated and judgmental best friend!

I am another who dislikes talking about diets and weight loss. At my age, early 60s, it seems a bit more odd asking such questions or making comments on my friends’ weight, be they positive or negative. Many women my age with weight issues have done every diet under the sun and I think that is one reason some of us don’t like talking about diets and weight loss very much.

Am also concerned in case Mounjara doesn’t work as it’s early days for me. So far I’ve done 5 weeks on 2.5 mg and haven’t lost any more weight since the first week (4 lbs)! So it’s had a very modest effect. But I don’t mind as have used the first month more as an experiment as I really wanted to avoid side-effects as much as possible. The only side-effect I’ve had so far on 2.5 mg is mild constipation.

For me, it’s not the “easy option”. Really it feels like the only option left. I am 3 stone overweight with serious but invisible chronic health issues and it is virtually impossible for me to lose weight, short of starving myself. I have thyroid issues on top of that, and of course my age is another barrier. The extra weight is also affecting my ability to move and worsening my arthritis. I have no intention into going into all my medical issues and reasons with acquaintances or strangers etc - they won’t be interested for a start and those issues they do know about they have never shown any concern about anyway!

Because of my height and build, if I were to lose, say, 30 lbs, which I would be happy with, it wouldn’t look such a massive or drastic loss; it would probably be just over one dress size. So I doubt that many people would comment anyway. It’s not like I’m losing say 5 - 10 stone on a small frame, where I suppose people might wonder more.

But each to their own! Who knows, I may be more open one day, especially if I became more settled on it and knew that it really worked for me, including for maintenance.. But by that time I think probably half the world will be on Mounjara!

PurpleMunchkin · 30/12/2024 23:27

Only my husband, and my prescribing gp knows. MJ is not well known in my country and only been available since sept and only if prescribed by a gp. So I don't think it would occur to anyone that I would be on it. Not sure how I'd answer if asked, but I'd probably say yes.
It's been fascinating to watch the results from the masses on it in the UK. I would not have heard of it if not for MN.

MrBirling · 30/12/2024 23:52

I've only told my DH. Very few people have commented on my weight loss even though I know it's obvious. I honestly don't think most people really are aware of the injections so don't ask. I eat low carb most of the time so I've used that to explain the weight loss to the few people who have said anything.

But I've done low carb before and this is the first time I've lost as much as I have so I do think one work colleague will suspect. She's very interested in diet / exercise etc and will definitely be aware of the injections. I'm not sure what I'll say if she asks.

I think you’re right about not many in general knowing what they actually do- the way the media portrays them is that it’s a celebrity thing with ‘Ozempic face’. Has anyone been on Loose Women or This Morning and spoken about them yet?

Doggymummar · 31/12/2024 09:22

Yes I've seen clips on Facebook of people (women:)talking about it in shows like that

beguilingeyes · 31/12/2024 09:39

Only one friend who is also on it. I've been on it for a year and almost at goal. I'm planning to come off it at the end of January and vaguely dreading the return on food noise and appetite.

Lovethesparklylights · 31/12/2024 10:57

I told 'D'H. He told a few until I hit the roof and asked him if he wants me to share all his medical stuff.
He still thinks he did no wrong, but that is his usual state of mind- he can't take criticism and is never wrong.

I am type 2 diabetic and have other health issues. My BMI was 44 in June so I started Mounjaro. I've lost 30kg now and BMI is 32. Gp would not prescribe it. Weight loss clinic would not prescribe it. I calculated the amount of money I spent on food and figuring if I could stop that it'd half be paid for. I'm not even at full dose, I'm holding at 10mg for now as its working well.
I've denied it to the few who've asked. It's a T2 diabetic medicine, which I have and I have drastically changed my diet.

Tapsz · 31/12/2024 12:16

Where are you from @PurpleMunchkin if you don’t mind me asking? It’s interesting how it’s legal here in UK and not other places. UK is often v strict on pharma matters.

ILoveAnnaQuay · 31/12/2024 12:26

@Lovethesparklylights I'm surprised your GP wouldn't prescribe it. Have you been on two meds for DM2?

I've been on Metformin and a 2nd line med and my HBC1A is not coming down. My BMI is 27 and I've just been prescribed it. The GP was very clear that its not being prescribed for weight loss but for reduction (hopefully) of blood sugar. I only have about a stone to lose to be in the healthy weight category and, whilst that would be nice, I am far more worried about my sugar levels and the damage that is doing to my body

Edited to add: And I've never told anyone apart from DH that I have Diabetes so I'm certainly not going to tell anyone about the MJ jabs!

Darlinghag · 31/12/2024 16:00

I still haven’t told anyone, been on it since August. I am sure a couple of people suspect but noone has asked outright. I live alone, but if I had a partner I would have told them.

my GP should know, but haven’t been there since I started to check! I would of course, disclose where I needed to and if I became ill to the point of needing medical treatment.
