GP refusing to prescribe longer than 3 months

I'm gutted.
I'm type 2 diabetic ( diagnosed 2 years ago) and was prescribed mounjaro 2.5mg in August by the practise diabetes nurse. Went up to 5mg in September. I've been on 5mg ever since. I've lost over 3 stone and my blood sugars are now in normal range. I've completely changed my diet. In fact mounjaro has changed my life.
I was 21st in August. There is now no longer a diabetes nurse and I saw a GP for my latest review.
Even though I still have 7-8 stone left to lose he's stopping the mounjaro claiming it's only ever prescribed for 3 months. I feel so low and panicky. He just wouldn't listen when I said I knew I couldn't do it on my own. If I could I wouldn't have ended up 21st!
I've made an appointment to see a different doctor but that's not until January. Paying privately is just not an option for me unfortunately.
I feel like crying all the time. I was feeling so much better.

if youre on it for diabetes then it shouldn't be stopped

Doggymummar · 12/12/2024 17:41

Well, you have to titrate down the GP can't just stop. I guess you are still over 40 BMI? That what our surgeries criteria is.

SENMUMwhatnext · 12/12/2024 17:42

Have you looked up the NICE guidelines?

I did have a look and couldn't see anything about only being on it for 3 months.
I thought it was a longterm medication for diabetes not a quick fix.

What does 21st mean?

Ive never heard of this being given to type 2 diabetics only for 3 months. My OH has been on this type of medicataion (different brand name) for about 10 years. Its not likely he will ever come off it

I’m guess 21 stone.

OP I would make an appointment with a different GP.

SBOTD · 12/12/2024 17:50

But your blood sugar is in normal range now? So I am not sure how that affects your overall diabetes diagnosis? It’s a bit confusing tbh.

Not shameful, never feel that

I dont know why I was reading that as 20 first!!!

Thinking what was she 20 first for, in a queuing system or something!!!!

Isobel201 · 12/12/2024 18:10

I wasn't allowed Mounjaro on private because their reasoning was that I'm diabetic and therefore may need further treatment in the future, which I didn't really understand. I'm 19 stone right now, and could do with some weightloss help but I can't get Mounjaro on the NHS in my area. My blood sugar was in the right range apparently last May (going for a repeat blood test next week).

Pumpkinforever · 12/12/2024 18:26

In the news the talk is about a 12 year roll out before all can access it on NHS and obesity restriction means only 220,000 get initially. However I thought that didn’t apply apply to diabetics, you need to go back to the GP surgery. Glad you have another appointment. Do you have enough doses to keep you going until then? If not contact receptionist and say you need another appointment as your medication will run out

BigBagOfElbows · 12/12/2024 18:50

I've just checked my medication repeats online and mounjaro is still there so I've requested my next prescription and crossing everything that it goes through.
I have 2 doses left in the fridge.
I'm also on medication for high blood pressure which is coming down nicely and my latest blood test showed my cholesterol is the lowest it's been for 16 years.
Why take someone off a medication when it's working as it should be? It makes no sense.

@BigBagOfElbows I know you haven't posted but I searched a very specific thing and this post came up. I am in the same predicament you were in. I was prescribed MJ and began losing weight and improving my hba1 levels. I am still off my bmi being in normal by a long shot but they are not going to prescribe it anymore. Just wanted to reach out and ask what happened in your case?

BigBagOfElbows · 24/04/2025 06:53

@Loveachoc I'm sorry to hear that you're in a similar predicament but I can update with encouraging news. I saw a different GP and the difference was startling. He agreed that I met the criteria to be prescribed mounjaro for weight loss even if I wasn't diabetic.
He also increased my dose to 7.5mg and told me to let him know if I needed to go higher in the future. I now weigh 16 stone, so a 5 stone loss so far.
Please see a different doctor! It's crazy to me that even at the same surgery it matters which doctor you see.
I genuinely hope you are successful. If I hadn't been I would've had to somehow find the money from somewhere to fund it. It's saved my life.

@BigBagOfElbows thanks for your encouragement and congrats on your progress I know what an achievement that is as most people think the weight falls of magically. I will check with a different GP.
