Thought I was post-menopausal - now on Mounjaro and period has returned

Hi, I have just turned 53 and went on Mounjaro 6 weeks ago. I was 'officially' post-menopausal having not had a period for over 12 months (actually it was about 15 months). However, I was still having some 'hot flashes'. My weight gain was menopausal - went to 12 st from 10st, all around middle area. Nothing would shift it. Never been overweight in my life previously.

I was on 2.5mg of Mounjaro for 4 weeks and now I'm on second week of 5mg. The following has happened -

Hot flashes (flushes?) stopped almost immediately.

Knee pain (which was a sports injury from my 20s but, I believe, was exacerbated by menopause) subsided - bear in mind I was considering knee surgery.

Breast tenderness in last few days (similar to what I remember from early pregnancy in my 30s).

Sudden increased sex drive (sorry if tmi, but it's hormonal so including this).

And now, period has returned. Last month I had a few days spotting (on 2.5mg), this month, on 5mg, it's like a regular period.

Anyone else? I feel like Mounjaro has somehow reversed the menopause! How can this be? Any doctors on here?

@cosima4 https://click2pharmacy.co.uk/can-weight-loss-pens-affect-your-menstrual-cycle/?srsltid=AfmBOoqgg-nwkDyYcvs25M4QNnZsz1mqGAkQFgrf4Zd0WjAlEffMHJQCThere’s nothing to suggest that there’s anything urgent about being seen by the GP, around 10% of women experience post meno bleeding, a greater proportion of these within the first couple of years of meno, and for about 10-15% of these there will be an issue with malignancy, it’s something that just needs to be checked out ,just in case. Why don’t you submit an e consult form if your gp does these?

The OP is post menopausal, the bleeding is not a period.

This needs investigation urgently because it can be an early sign of cancer

Fabulouslyunfabulous · 11/12/2024 18:55

It seems that it also melts brain cells too.

I’m quite aware of that , the GP will also be aware of that and an e consult is probably the quickest way to get directed to the right pathway, but it’s not something to panic over. quite a lot of women experienced post menopause bleeding with the Covid jab or Covid itself, sometimes there is a benign cause, and seeing as how WLJ are having a known effect on women’s cycles the odds are in the op’s favour…hence why a lot of women are able to get pregnant after long periods of infertility due to obesity, as it normalises people’s cycles. ammenorrhea can be down to hormone disruption because of obesity not just because of menopause.

FuckThePoPo · 11/12/2024 19:01

Ok then op good luck

A friend who hadn't had a period for over a year started eating very healthily (just fresh, protein rich, lots of veg etc) and her periods came back for a while. I don't see why everyone thinks it's that strange (though worth checking). I've had 6 month gaps and then they've returned and, like a PP, now only get them when my student daughter is home.

SeasonsGreetingsBatFace · 11/12/2024 19:09

I'm 53 and have lost 70lbs on MJ. I'm now 9 and a half stone ish

I am not menopausal and was having periods but they were heavy and irregular. Since taking MJ they have returned to regular and normal

Having said that, of course any unexplained and unexpected bleeding post menopause needs investigating but I can well believe that MJ is restoring periods and working on a hormonal level. So some posters can be derisory about this but it's the OPs experience and not yours

It's very rare I report threads/users but I have reported this ridiculous, anti science thread, OP.

Lol, good luck! What did you report her for... Being a woman posting about her experience and asking if anyone else has had the same thing happen to them? On Mumsnet?

This is rubbish. And is irresponsible

Mounjaro messed with my cycles - they’re back to normal now - I’ve just started month 4 on it.

I don’t know why some people are being so outraged - if they think the OP is being anti science what on earth are they basing their statements on?

it sounds quite plausible to me that mounjaro would impact on hormones which might in turn lead to a period

but I would also check in with your doctor

some people lose their minds when it’s about weight loss medication

LegoTherapy · 11/12/2024 19:18

@Fabulouslyunfabulous quite. I keep hoping for a cure for stupid but sadly MJ is proving nothing is available yet.

MothToAnInferno · 11/12/2024 19:18

Can you not get advice from the prescriber? I thought weight loss drugs were meant to be taken under supervision from a Dr?

R053 · 11/12/2024 19:19

I thought I had completed menopause at 52 but then I got a full blown period after a year and then another lighter one after that. My GP sent me off to have investigations with the gynaecologist.
I wasn’t taking any weight loss medication or HRT.
The gynaecologist told me that around 10% of post menopausal bleeds are connected with cancer, which is why they take it very seriously.

The issue is that post menopausal, ie 12 months it more with no period, bleeding is NOT a period. And can be an early sign of cancer. The thread has many posters downplaying this reality and may mean people avoiding proper investigations. This is irresponsible

No it doesn’t - there are some posters recounting their own experience. And some saying it’s plausible that mounjaro impacts on hormones and maybe this could be that. that is not saying it might not be cancer at all

the OP herself has said she’ll get checked out

its just anti mounjaro hysteria

Oestrogen is stored in body fat so you may be experiencing a "last blast" as your fat breaks down.

Last time I lost a significant amount of weight I had to go on the pill for this exact reason; I was having a period every 3 weeks due to the amount of oestrogen that was being released.

The link you posted is to an article about the menstrual cycle

Exactly , the op may not having actually gone through the menopause but may have been experiencing ammenorhea …….ammenorrhea can be associated with hormone disruption and obesity, women with PCOS in particular can experience severe symptoms in their 40’s/50’s that overlap with those symptoms of peri/ menopause and it can be hard to work out which is causing what. Hence why losing weight and achieving a better BMI improves women’s cycles and also improves women’s health in menopause. All speculation of course but this is why the OP needs to see her GP to determine if she is actually still menstruating or has in fact gone through the menopause and is experiencing post menopause bleeding.

I haven’t mentioned MOUNJARO at all. Try reading what I’ve written . I’m out.

There’s no cure for stupid

Also I suggest @cosima4you ask @mnhqto move this to the weight loss injections section as you will get more informed replies and avoid the idiotic haters.

People are not 'haters' because they don't want anyone ignoring a very common ovarian cancer symptom

ImaniMumsnet · 11/12/2024 19:35

Hi OP,

We are just stepping in here to say while we understand that you are reaching out here for support or experiences from others - we would always recommend seeking medical attention on threads like this.

We wish you all the best.

Fabulouslyunfabulous · 11/12/2024 19:35

The title alone is alarming and misleading. Imagine bleeding post menopause and ignoring the fact that this is potentially a sign of something much more sinister because you are using weight loss jabs.

GreyBlackBay · 11/12/2024 19:41

I'm glad you have a gp appointment booked.

Start taking your basel body temperature. This will tell you if you are ovulating.

I sincerely doubt it, but if you're seeing so many people report similar symptoms it must have some temporary effect which causes a bleed.

NamechangeRugby · 11/12/2024 19:43

Great you are going to get checked Op.

On a slightly different note, I appreciate you are less hungry, so eating less, but do you think you might be eating less refined sugar? I only ask in relation to hot flushes.

I'm not on any medication, but I've noticed a strong correlation between if my diet is fresh and low in sweet stuff - zero hot flushes.

If I'm on not such a good roll (once I start eating chocolate it is difficult to stop!) - then I'll experience hot flushes at night. Sleep is broken. Without good sleep I have brain fog and am anxious and then I crave sweet stuff, so bit of a vicious cycle!

Please do tell where I wrote that people were haters for ignoring cancer symptoms.

let me save you some time because I said nothing remotely like that.

😳 muppet

berksandbeyond · 11/12/2024 19:48

@MajorCarolDanvers you seem lovely!

You recommended for it to be moved to the forum where mounjaro is worshipped, because god forbid an opinion exist outside of the echo chamber.

Meanwhile, in the real world, some of us have lost people to diseases that started with post menopausal bleeding and are recommending extreme caution.

But sure, I'm a muppet. Not dumb enough to ignore a cancer symptom because of a 'miracle drug' though!
