Thought I was post-menopausal - now on Mounjaro and period has returned

Hi, I have just turned 53 and went on Mounjaro 6 weeks ago. I was 'officially' post-menopausal having not had a period for over 12 months (actually it was about 15 months). However, I was still having some 'hot flashes'. My weight gain was menopausal - went to 12 st from 10st, all around middle area. Nothing would shift it. Never been overweight in my life previously.

I was on 2.5mg of Mounjaro for 4 weeks and now I'm on second week of 5mg. The following has happened -

Hot flashes (flushes?) stopped almost immediately.

Knee pain (which was a sports injury from my 20s but, I believe, was exacerbated by menopause) subsided - bear in mind I was considering knee surgery.

Breast tenderness in last few days (similar to what I remember from early pregnancy in my 30s).

Sudden increased sex drive (sorry if tmi, but it's hormonal so including this).

And now, period has returned. Last month I had a few days spotting (on 2.5mg), this month, on 5mg, it's like a regular period.

Anyone else? I feel like Mounjaro has somehow reversed the menopause! How can this be? Any doctors on here?

I would see a doctor asap.
any post menopausal bleeding should be investigated

cosima4 · 11/12/2024 17:33

I very much feel that I'm having a menstrual cycle though, rather than random bleeding. It's definitely hormonal.

That sounds quite worrying, OP. Menopause is not supposed to 'reverse'. See your GP asap.

I’m post menopausal, on HRT, and had a bleed during month one 2.5mg. I did research it, it can happen, it’s to do with your body adjusting to the medication.

Hoping it doesn’t come back next month.

ExtraOnions · 11/12/2024 17:36

…and I know mine isn’t anything dubious .. I had an endometrial biopsy in July, and it was all clear

If you go on Reddit, you’ll find plenty of other people who have had the same, if that helps.

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/12/2024 17:43

whilst I’m 50 I’m not menopausal but have had irrregular periods for years due to excess weight and PCOS.

since I lost my first 7lbs my periods have returned and are regular as clockwork

ThatCoralShark · 11/12/2024 17:44

Op, get thr appt booked, mounjaro does not reverse menopause, any bleeding post menopause needs to be investigated.

Dutch1e · 11/12/2024 17:44

Oestrogen is stored in body fat so you may be experiencing a "last blast" as your fat breaks down.

Yes, I went 12 months without a period, went away with my daughter, shared a room, and she had her period, I then also had a period, which was a period, and that was my last one. Her hormones in some way brought my hormones on in some way,

gamerchick · 11/12/2024 17:45

You need to see a doctor OP.

StepawayfromtheLindors · 11/12/2024 17:46

YABVVU to make such preposterous claims

KvotheTheBloodless · 11/12/2024 17:46

Post-menopausal bleeding needs urgent investigation under the 2-week wait. Call your GP back and ask for an emergency appointment and explain the problem to the receptionist, they should fit you in that day.

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/12/2024 17:47

Also I suggest @cosima4you ask @mnhqto move this to the weight loss injections section as you will get more informed replies and avoid the idiotic haters.

cosima4 · 11/12/2024 17:47

@ExtraOnions - thanks, I did see some people describing a similar thing on Reddit, but it's hard to know the extent.

@Dutch1e - that's interesting, thanks.

@ccosima4 I'm 52 and have been on HRT for 3 years I'm same stage as u take 2nd dose of 5mg on Friday I definitely haven't had spotting or any bleeding there no harm in saying to your doctor about it ii have a some cramps but don't know if it's MJ or not GoodLuck in your weight loss and keep as all posted

cosima4 · 11/12/2024 17:50

@KvotheTheBloodless - I already told the receptionist and she just said "ok, thanks, bye."

Thing is, I'm as certain as I can be that the Mounjaro is causing this (somehow) - just because it feels like a typical menstrual cycle.

cosima4 · 11/12/2024 17:53

@murraymcgill - thanks snd good luck to you too. I was never on HRT for menopause. My periods just gradually stopped.

YABVVU to make such preposterous claims

Preposterous is a strong word. Fat cells are incredible hoarders (it's why obese people are often low in Vitamin D - their fat cells lock it all up).

When you lose weight and your body is forced to use your fat as fuel, all that hoarded stuff goes back into your blood stream.... Pollutants, vitamins, and oestrogen. Oestrogen is released when body fat breaks down.

It's partly why people losing weight in a significant way can have some quite unexpected side-effects.

StepawayfromtheLindors · 11/12/2024 17:55

Menopause can’t be reversed in the same way that ageing can’t be reversed and a pregnancy can’t be reversed.

I’m stunned by the armchair endocrinologists.

Cosycover · 11/12/2024 17:55

AlbertCamusflage · 11/12/2024 17:38

I understand that it can also cure world poverty and secure peace in the middle east

Why the attitude?

If you read through the threads on here mounjaro has helped with alot of issues it hasn't been prescribed for.

For me it's helped with insomnia. And my anxiety is all but gone too.

cosima4 · 11/12/2024 17:55

'Preposterous?' I'm just saying what has happened.

Thanks Dutch1e. I wonder if it's something like that?

OP posts:
Mercurial123 · 11/12/2024 17:56

How on earth can it reverse menopause? My post menopausal bleeding was caused by endometrial hyperplasia, which I then went on to have a hysterectomy.
