Mounjaro, 10st or more to lose.

BookishBabe · 09/12/2024 05:43

Hello fellow mounjaro users or people thinking about starting. I have seen there is a thread for people needing to lose 5 stone plus, but even there I felt a little bit big.
I need to lose 12 stone, and even then my BMI would be 33.
Alot of people seem to be starting mounjaro with a starting BMI of 33, so I think it sometimes feels better to be among people who have the same amount to lose, 12 stone feels so daunting and scary. It's going to be a long battle.

This is my final chance before weight loss surgery, which I really don't want to do or risk.
I am 32 years old and have 2 young sons (7 and 5), one is disabled and the other is struggling and is on a reduced timetable at school. They need me to be around for a very long time and at the moment I feel like I am failing them.

I started calorie counting/a calorie controlled diet last Monday (2nd December). I was thinking about putting it off because of Christmas, but I can always come up with an excuse, so I decided to just go for it.

I weighed in at 27st and 7lbs.
At 5 ft 8 that gave me a BMI of 58.5!!!

I had some blood tests in March which showed I was prediabetic, I have done precisely nothing since then to do anything about it and have buried my head in the sand!

My mounjaro was delivered Tuesday afternoon and I took my first jab on Wednesday morning. I think its working slightly now, but I didn't feel any different for the first 3 days, but I'm either used to eating less (unlikely in 7 days) or the mounjaro has started to take effect.

So, one week in, calorie controlled diet every day, trying to get lots of protein, drinking loads, a few days of mounjaro in my system.

Weigh day time,

drum roll

26st and 11lbs!!!! 🥳

10lbs gone. I am very happy with that. I used to be able to lose 15lbs in a week when I was younger, but I was much more active back then and thanks to being so overweight I do struggle with activity.

BMI is now 57! So I've lost 1.5 on my BMI. Fingers crossed I can keep this going, I just need the number to keep going down! I'm really hoping I can be in a healthier and happier place with myself.

So, long post over.

Does anyone with 10st or more to lose want to join me here?

I know its daunting but I think if anyone feels like me, this is probably our last hope before surgery and our health is probably starting to decline or already has due to the weight we have on our bodies.

I am SO fed up with local gyms and pools. Who on earth wants to go swimming at 9pm?! And gyms with a pool start at £125 a month!

Check out local hotels - I go to the Marriott as it has a health club and I pay £45 a month which does include all classes, aquarobics etc. That’s an off peak membership but the hours are very generous but not evenings, I think you have to be in by 5pm.

I get fed up too! My Leisure Centre is less than £50 a month for me (blue light card, pay annually and long member discount) but I just force myself to go at the moment.

I go at lunchtime. Do a spin using virtual class so I am on my own in there and nobody in the pool at lunchtime. Yesterday I was the only one in the pool.

I do feel like ICBA’d most of the time but in the New Year I am aiming for 4 times a week! It is a battle!

I've tried that but the few local hotels don't have pools and I don't really want to drive 30-45 minutes to one.

I work from 8-5. Then cook dinner for family, and 3 nights a week I take kids to sport activities. I volunteer virtually all day on Saturdays, so the spare time I do have I'd love to go for a swim. The 'public' pools are ALL lessons / clubs between 5 and 9 which is crap. I live East London, so while there are other options not many miles away, London traffic means they take ages to get to.

Lunchtime not a possibility as I only get 30 mins lunch break. Blue light card is what got the local gym down to £120.. it got the one closest to home down to £155 a month!!!

Doggymummar · 27/12/2024 14:38

Have you asked at the GP? Our surgery offered me free passes to the local gym as part of weightloss treatment I might take them up on it next year.

Kay2000 · 27/12/2024 14:41

Yes my son lives in London and has the same problem. We want to move away from our village next year so will probably lose the pool as I’m 20 mins drive away now but being in the NW you can drive easily without crowds.

2025istheyear · 27/12/2024 14:41

@JusteanBiscuits that is so expensive I couldn’t justify that price unless I was there everyday!

The only thing I would say is we booked a holiday in Norfolk and there was a private pool but we were only allowed in at 9pm. To get my moneys worth I went every night at 9pm! Towards the end of the week I loved it 😍. Not replicated it at home but don’t need to. I may try when I give up alcohol in the New Year as my Weightloss increases if I exercise at night.

Iwouldratherbesinging · 27/12/2024 14:16

Very wise words from your son! I personally haven’t lost any enjoyment from food, I think if anything I enjoy it more rather than mindlessly eating it, it makes me think more about what I really want to eat. I don’t calorie count, I may have to in the future but I know roughly what the calories are and I just can’t be doing with the measuring and weighing of everything I cook.
I also have cervical spondylosis but it’s manageable, pins and needles in lower arms and hands is a pain, painful hips and knees has drastically improved which is a bonus.
my side effects have been minimal, just constipation but there is no way that is going to stop me taking this miracle drug - good luck!

Yes he says I’ve got to stop blaming pregnancy with him for being fat 24 years later 😆

2025istheyear · 27/12/2024 14:47

@Kay2000 you will be surprised how different you feel on MJ. If it works it transforms you into a completely different person around food.

2025istheyear · 27/12/2024 15:05

Just got the email to say my referral for tier 4 Specialist WLM has been accepted! I am happy to be on the tier 4 pathway. I know they have funding for MJ. This is my last chance to sort myself out and I am going to grab all the help I can. Not going to stop paying for MJ privately. I have put away next year’s money to pay for it. Extra help can only help even if it is just group meet ups.

Exercise on prescription. Yes. I was offered that - but could only use the pass during working hours!

NotOlive · 27/12/2024 16:08

@Kay2000 I’m also an old-timer who has reactivated on MN. Also have severe arthritis and have been told I can’t have surgery until I reach a BMI of 40.

I had my third jab of 2.5 last night. I don’t think it’s really working in terms of appetite suppression and I’ve definitely had too much to eat over Xmas. Also too much booze.

Presumably it makes sense to go up to a 5 dose next time.

2025istheyear · 27/12/2024 16:38

@NotOlive 2.5 for me was more a shift in not being bothered to shop and prepare food for me! Not so much an appetite suppressant but a can’t be arsed if it’s not in the house suppressant 😂

5mg first 2 weeks more appetite suppressant but wearing off a bit now in my 4th week. Will go up the doses. Still lost a stone and a half though so I trust the process now.

January kids go back to Uni so me and DH happy with beans on toast we are both actually looking forward to it!!! Teenagers even Uni students these days want meat meat meat! Boys though so that is probably why!!

Just done my photos. OMG. I usually avoid looking at myself, I am so so so fat, why did I let myself get like this 😬. Onwards and upwards as my school motto said (Onwards and Downwards hopefully 😂). Thoroughly depressing photos. Anyone else like me? I think I see and think of myself as I was when I was younger and thinner. In my head I think I’m around 12, 13 stone and it’s a terrible shock when I see myself in photos (hence I avoid them). I’m setting up a health journal to document my progress and I will include photos so I can see progress.

I totally relate to this. I'm very hourglass and also hold weight on my tummy. At 10-11 stone they are lovely curves with a bit of a pot belly. As I have gained (and lost and regained) over the years everything just becomes more extreme and the curves more exaggerated. It took hitting 17 stone+ to really notice that my tummy is actually hugely distended now, my ass sticks out further than I think and my boobs are cartoon large.
I sometimes think if I gained in a different way that I'd have engaged better with how bad things were getting years ago. Having extra rolls of fat would have said 'you are morbidly obese now' to me more clearly than a tummy edging out more each month.

Yes I’m hourglass too with big boobs, really curvy figure when I was younger. Exactly as you said, I can gain quite a bit of weight and it’s hidden on my thighs, boobs etc. So I was able to ignore it for quite a long time. But no more ignoring, I have to get control for my health.

FknOmniShambles · 27/12/2024 19:42

Can I join you all? It's been great reading the honesty in your comments. I'm 5' 7" and probably 25 stone or so. Absolutely gutted at allowing myself to become this big but take full responsibility.
I'm planning on starting Mounjaro at the start of the new year,. In conjunction with the healthy diet I know I should be following, but I want to do this completely secretly. My DH is the loveliest man alive and always makes me feel beautiful, but I just want this to be something I do for me. He would worry about the safety of the drug.
I am absolutely fed up of being huge though, thinking about my size 24/7 and having to say no to every fun opportunity going.
Can anyone else relate to keeping it secret? Hoping I can get it delivered to work.

We can do it together. My husband and son know but I’m not telling anyone else as everyone has an opinion that I don’t want to hear. My husband is worried about the safety of the drug too, but let’s face it, being as overweight as we are isn’t safe either. Would your husband be upset you’re excluding him in this? I’d consider telling him, but do what I have and say I’m just giving it a try. Mine does our food shopping so he’s got to be on board!

PotatoBreadForTheWin · 27/12/2024 20:07

I haven't told anyone apart from a friend who I know is also on mounjaro. My DH hasn't even noticed a change in my eating habits, although he is spectacularly unobservant.

Totally understand your reasons, it's easy to hide in my experience. My pen sits in a tomato puree box in the fridge, no one else in my house is ever going to open that

FknOmniShambles · 27/12/2024 20:31

I think he would be a little upset @Kay2000 but would ultimately respect my decision. He always makes me feel loved and attractive, and I love him for that, but I just can't feel like this any more!
@PotatoBreadForTheWin love the idea!! My plan is to keep it in my fridge at work but I do need it delivered there as husband is home earlier than me and would wonder what the parcel was. I don't like the feeling of deception but I do feel I have to do this. And an improvement in diet is much needed for both of us - he eats poorly too but has ASC with a narrow diet and a physical job that allows him to work off many many calories.

Kay2000 · 27/12/2024 20:40

My husband notices nothing usually, once I had a new pair of glasses and thought I’d see how long it took for him to notice. He didn’t 😂. It’s good as he’s never made me feel bad about my weight (maybe he’s not noticed the 10 stone gain since we married 🤷‍♀️😂) and loves me unconditionally so I’m lucky. He’s gained a couple of stone in the past couple of years but could lose it if he tried, as he’s never had to diet in his life. He’s just not bothered but I think if we eat better, it’ll help him too.

2025istheyear · 27/12/2024 20:41

Check you can keep it in the fridge at work I personally would not like to keep mine in a fridge at work.

I had a baby in NICU and changed the whole policy of storing breast milk because I went a bit mad thinking someone would do something to it! Totally off the wall but my mind was playing games and I was completely paranoid about this. Irrational but still the nurses allowed me to have a locked box for my breast milk.

My DH would be upset with me for not telling him as he would rather know should something happen to me.

If he is supportive and loving I think he will help you.

FknOmniShambles · 27/12/2024 20:51

The fridge at work is my personal little fridge in my office so not used for anything else beyond my stash of water (and chocolate no more!!!) But from what I understand, if I use the first dose immediately, I don't need to keep it refrigerated? I could be wrong, still loads to learn about this all.
I do get it regarding the secrecy and will think think hard about whether I want to tell him. It just feels so embarrassing.
Would anyone mind sharing where they get their medication from? I'm leaning toward Voy but predictably my social media is absolutely flooded with companies offering deals...

Lobsterteapot · 27/12/2024 22:32

Well my 2.5 starter dose arrives tomorrow!
I’ve emailed my surgery to request an urgent medication check as I’m already on type 2 diabetes meds, worried about any interactions.
Are there any online resources you’d recommend for life on Mounjaro?

Thanks 2025. I guess I haven't made that leap to trust the process yet. I've had so many false starts and failed attempts at shifting the weight, and I desperately want this to happen. I feel like my life is on hold because I'm so limited by the arthritis in my knees.

I also have had adult kids back for Christmas and there is too much rich stuff in the house. DD has gone back due to work commitments but I also have a hungry student DS here still. He is more carbs and puddings focussed rather than meat. He'll be off soon after new year (postgrad so shorter holidays) so hopefully I can regulate what's in the house a bit better.

NotOlive · 28/12/2024 14:15

That's useful to know about threatening to leave with Voy. Will give that a go. Thank you.
