Best protein shakes or best ways to get calories in?

HelloWorld2577 · 02/12/2024 19:41

Hello all!

I am struggling to eat more than 800 calories a day on Mounjaro at the moment, so looking for ways to slightly increase my calories. I have tried every single pre mixed protein shake on the shelf in shops and I dislike all of them! So looking to buy a powder online to mix myself.

What is everyone’s favourite protein shake, brand flavour etc. do you mix with milk or water etc. thank you!

I prefer the clear ones. They taste like juice!

I’ve made my peace with having some really low calorie days. Over time it must all balance out! I have had mega suppression on 5mgs, some days I’ve eaten very little as I just have no appetite at all.
I hate all of those artificial powdered things though and don’t think I could actually get them down full stop even when not on MJ - I tried a few years back and gave the powder to my brother who was also doing a lot of weight training.
Good luck finding something that works for you, I’m convinced they all taste gross but to be fair I haven’t tried many.

I can’t stand protein powder drinks, but I quite like Yfood. The ready made drinks are 500 cals for the whole bottle and have vitamins and minerals in there.
I find them handy if I can’t manage a meal

For me, it's plain, unflavoured Huel powder. Boring as anything. They do a white version (balanced macros) and a black version (higher protein). White tastes better, I think.

I have also tried many shakes and haven't found one I like (including the Huel premixed shakes). They all contain sweeteners which I dislike. Their flavoured powders do at well but the unflavoured is bland and you can add whatever you want or mix into smoothies etc, or just drink as it comes (tastes oaty, not unpleasant just a bit dull). When I'm ill I make it up with extra water so it's not too thick and that gets liquid and nutrition in without me having to eat anything.

You need to reduce your dose if it's affecting you that badly. You are still meant to be able to eat. What dosage are you on?

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 02/12/2024 20:02

Perhaps look at making protein bars yourself?

Everyreason · 02/12/2024 20:03

Not a calorie boosting shake but I blend my own to boost my nutrient intake. I’m on mounjaro and worry more about nutrients than calories. I usually use a combination of spinach, Greek yogurt, walnuts, flax, frozen forest fruits. If I wanted to boost protein I’d add some huel protein powder.

Might be worth checking with your prescriber. I’m currently on 7.5mg (9 weeks in) and I still get hungry but it just takes a lot less to fill me up and I don’t snack.

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/12/2024 22:49

I love these. Taste like yazoo milkshakes

They were £12 last week

Wish I got more. I will again when on offer

Are you eating high calorie good fats like nuts and nut butters?

A teaspoon of almond butter is about 100 calories or a portion of raw nuts is about 5 walnuts. You can add them to full fat Greek yoghurt for a healthy high protein but light and easy to eat snack that will give you loads of good nutrition.

SereneCapybara · 02/12/2024 22:59

Could you just eat small quantities of healthy high calorie foods, like nuts, avocados, cheese and take vitamin supplements?

Evencloserties · 02/12/2024 23:01

Surely proper food always better?

JurassicPark4Eva · 02/12/2024 23:02

Clear whey is the only protein stuff I can tolerate. Can't bear the milkshakes.

I do have a regular go to - egg and bacon (the rounds) in a high protein wrap with some chilli jam and low fat cream cheese. Delicious and high in protein.

spottydogsarethebest · 03/12/2024 09:06

My protein clear whey in peach tea or orange & mango flavour- 20g a scoop. I add collagen for an extra 10g of protein.

Seriously though, 800 calories is very low, you will start to feel weak. The only time I have had nausea was when I hadn't eaten enough.

The Fufill protein bars are good- expensive but nice.

I am able to have dinner just not hungry all day and have to try and force myself to have lunch! I’m on week 8 and 2.5 wore off after week 4 so went up to 5mg and it was way to strong and made me sick so I’m doing 4mg instead as 2.5 just stopped working! 4 is great for me so far other than being very very suppressing.

See this is why it’s so odd because I’m only one week behind you but can’t even take 5 yet! Having to do 50 clicks of 5mg (makes it 4.16 I believe)

U Fit are the best pre-made ones I've had; strawberry one just tastes like a milkshake.

Huel Black (pre-made) is technically healthier because it has balanced vitamins blah blah so I do try and have that on days when I really can't eat, half a bottle for lunch or dinner, but it's much heavier and chalkier than I'd like.

MyProtein has the best clear whey powders. You can buy sample packs of 10 to try out the different flavours. Some are incredibly sweet (peach tea flavour I think?); my own favourites flavours are Vimto, lemon & lime, and pineapple & grapefruit. After you've mixed with water and given them a good shake, leave them in the fridge for around 20 minutes to settle properly. Best consumed very cold.

SurreyisSunny · 03/12/2024 20:42

@HelloWorld2577 it really is odd how it effects different people. I’ve been very sick both times I’ve increased my dose but after a few days been ok. My main issue is that there’s little food i
fancy eating but i still need 3 meals a day.

I saw someone on Instagram trying snickers protein shake! That sounds like my sort of thing!!

Mew2 · 03/12/2024 20:49

What about 4 ingredient protein brownie or flapjack- literally bananas, protein powder, cocoa powder and chocolate chips for brownies, or oats, banana, protein powder and peanut butter for flapjack
Alternatively make a smoothie with protein powder- add milk (tastes better than water and has calcium and protein in it), some nut butter and some fruit- can also add greek yoghurt for more calories- Alternatively add some cocoa powder to make a flavoured milkshake!!

MymateDave · 03/12/2024 21:01

I bought the my protein clear whey to drink. It's just like juice not milky like the others. The watermelon tastes fabulous x
