Bonus dose - what did I do wrong?

Hi,

I was trying to help my friend get her bonus dose out of the mounjaro pen. We got pliers and got it to twist but then when she twisted to 1 and plunged to inject nothing came out. Did we break it? You can see there's another dose left in the pen that isn't going anywhere.

I took ozempic and it was so much easier to get any extra out.

Thanks.

The pen is being broken so it sometimes breaks too much/the wrong way and the only way to get the remaining liquid out is using a syringe.

I have also read some people saying the pen mechanism on newer pens has changed to try to prevent it being used, not sure if that is true or not.

It is worth getting some syringes in for any pen failures for any dose.

Oh I see she just started so this must be a new pen. Thanks for the info. I'll tell her to get some syringes if she will go for that, she was worried enough about the pen needles!

It happened to me too, the plunger keeps falling back, gutted! I was thinking I twisted it too much with the pliers but it might be the new pen issue. The 2.5mg bonus dose was fine but the 5mg didn't plunge yesterday so I've ordered insulin syringes £5.54 including delivery.

How do you get it out using a syringe?

How do you get it out using a syringe?

Just prick through the rubber end with a syringe needle and draw out the medication.

Is the liquid in the top/clear part of the pen? Sorry if I'm sounding thick, but I've only done one dose so far and there's nothing visible to show there's liquid in the pen.

@Slimwannabe

The liquid is there in the glass vial part of the pen nearest the red seal, it is just so clear you don't see it (unless you get an air bubble in it)

It is worth buying some syringes to have on standby in case you have a pen failure (and don't want the hassle,of sending pen back/waiting for a replacement) or to access the 5th dose of hard twist fails. Search for 1ml 8mm 32G syringes

1ml - a full dose of any strength is 0.6ml so you need a 1ml syringe
8mm - the shortest syringe needle available, this is still subcutaneous
32G - the finest syringe needle available

Some buy 12mm needles like in the link above and only partially insert when injecting, but I couldn't do that/inject while looking.

Wipe seal as normal, insert the syringe needle into the seal and extract liquid, you are looking to extract just over 0.6ml for a full dose, prime needle the same way you prime the pen needles to 0.6ml, then inject. Be careful with hygiene throughout.

buy syringes from a medical supplier (not amazon) to ensure you get human quality

@WeAllHaveWings thank you so much, this is incredibly clear and helpful!

Thank you everyone, she got the syringes and it was surprisingly easy to do.
