Monjarno and anxiety

Hi,

I'm on my 2nd week, due 3rd jab tomorrow.
Weight loss so far has been amazing, the jab is doing what it's supposed to do.

Unfortunately the downside is I'm having horrific anxiety, mostly at night.

I've had anxiety for over 20 years but completely under control with medication but my god it's so so bad.

I'm drinking loads of fluid a day and electrolytes. Sugar levels are fine, calories are all good.

I've read magnesium helps so I have ordered some.

Anyone else have this and anything that helps? Or does it eventually pass like other sode affects?

It happens to some people. Mounjaro does increase heart rate. Do you take anything for your anxiety? If not, perhaps think of speaking to your GP to prescribe something. It will help keep it off. If you do, you can still speak to your GP maybe to increase your dose as MJ can affect medication and could be affecting your anxiety med.

Edit: I've just reread and seen that you do take medication. In tbat case, you can speak to GP to increase your dose to bring it back under control. It does pass but you just never know when or if it will come back up again with each MJ dose increase.

I think if you suffer from clinically diagnosed anxiety (as opposed to just generally getting anxious about stuff like everyone) , it can trigger it to be worse, as it’s a change, it’s not the drug itself from what I understand, simply the act of taking it, that causes anxiety and panic attacks in those who have this condition. It could have been anything that triggered it. Moving house, a broken ankle, anything.

id speak to your doctor.

Unfortunately it is definitely the monjarno.

I will call my doctors about increasing my dose and hopefully that will help

Mine got worse when after I'd increased to 5ml. But it had been getting worse with perimenopause and got bad when I had a lot going on so have never been 100% it's the MJ! Increasing my sertraline didn't help, althoughit definitely wasn't as bad. I've just started going back down the doses as I'm stopping soon so am curious if the anxiety eases off too!

I'm so tired of reading comments like this. It's not the change in situation causing anxiety, it's mounjaro. Mounjaro can cause anxiety and panic attacks in people, which sucks.

Lifeisblaaaaaaaaa · 26/11/2024 15:52

I have read plenty about it, also I know my body and have dealt with anxiety for a very long time. I have had it under control for many years now.

I took my 3rd 2.5mg this morning so I'm really hoping it's doesn't get worse than it is already as it is working amazingly

Good luck @Lifeisblaaaaaaaaa
I ended up reducing my dose to 1.25mg because the anxiety was too much, I was waking up in the night panicking out of nowhere. Hopefully it disappears for you, but just adding this in case it's useful. I've been on it for around 7 weeks now, and lost a stone, with no anxiety x

Lifeisblaaaaaaaaa · 26/11/2024 19:28

That is amazing. So far today I have been fine but like you it comes mostly at night. Thank you for thr advice I Will definitely try that if it continues

@crumbsonmyface Hi can I ask if the anxiety disappeared with1.25? I have been floored with anxiety since my first dose of 2.5 last Friday, only just feeling ok today, second dose due tomorrow which I cannot take as I felt so awful!

Agreed. It can also flatten/lower mood, despite posters claiming otherwise.

Of course in other people it can lift mood and reduce anxiety. A mixed bag!

If anyone taking oral HRT or other meds notices a mood difference on MJ, it's worth considering the MJ may be reducing your medication effectiveness due to slowed gastric emptying.

Hi Jules, that really sucks that you’ve had anxiety from mj. So I’ve been on mj since October 2024 now (almost a year now - and about 30lb down). 2.5mg was way too much for my body to handle, the first week was awful - palpitations, anxiety through the roof and panic attacks out of nowhere.

1.25mg was so much better, I basically stayed on that for a long while until I could feel I needed to increase the dose. (currently on 3.75mg). Couple of things that I’ve found:

-check your electrolytes, make sure you’re getting some extra potassium and magnesium as that helped
-low sugar was also spiking my anxiety weirdly
-truthfully everytime I increase to a new dose I do feel anxious for a couple of days around jab day (but this does go away after a few weeks on the same dose, it’s why I’ve only ever increased my dose in small increments - eg. 10 clicks at a time)

Hope that helps, it’s so hard battling anxiety side effects xx

Jules36912 · 13/09/2025 09:15

@crumbsonmyface thank you for your message! I couldn’t face my second dose yesterday but I am thankfully feeling less anxious (took until day 6!!) so I’ll try halving the dose next week. Thanks again x

Everdecreasingcircle · 13/09/2025 09:15

I’ve been on Mounjaro for well over a year and have lost 9 stone 8lbs. I have kept to 7.5mg but dropped back down to 5mg as have had anxiety and low mood for last 4/5 months. It is so strange it took so long for the anxiety to start but wondered as I am much smaller maybe I needed to lower the dose which seems to have helped.
Also taking magnesium and multivitamins seems to help too.
It is certainly a side effect in a lot of people and I think keeping to lower doses if you can really helps.

Lifeisblaaaaaaaaa · 21/09/2025 18:30

Hi, for me yes absolutely fine now. Hope you are ok
