Collagen recommendations

Menopause beckons and I'm full of aches and pains. Wondering if collagen is a good idea. Ancient and Brave keeps popping up on my feed. Has anyone tried it? It seems to be bovine only and someone has mentioned it should contain fish as well?

I love the willpowders one by davina Taylor. She has done a lot of research into menopause and has great info on her insta. Good price as well

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 18/11/2024 09:29

Ancient and Brave is fab. Their wild collagen is the marine one and the one I use. I have been informed I look more ‘glowy’ 😁

ShiftAMountain · 18/11/2024 10:01

Ancient & Brave do a marine one as well, it's called "Wild Collagen".

I'm going to add a lone voice of dissent: I have a jar of Wild Collagen sat on the shelf above me and it genuinely feels like a punishment each day when I need to add it to my lovely morning coffee. I tried it as everyone swears it is tasteless but, to me, it is not. It ruins the coffee and often seems to clump, despite how much I stir (almost whisk sometimes). I dread taking it and haven't even tried taking a full dose yet - 1/3 of a scoop is more than enough to put me off. When the jar is done, I won't be ordering any more.

Personally, I'd rather swallow 6 large capsules of collagen than drink the powder so I'll be trying to find some of thsoe when this jar of powder is finally gone.

I have a monthly subscription of Ancient and Brave wild collagen. It does have a taste but you get used to it. I would never taint my morning coffee 🤣 and add it to my morning shake or a herbal tea later in the day. The bovine collagen doesn’t have any taste at all and I think mixes better into hot drinks.

Doggymummar · 18/11/2024 10:09

Please do whatever you want, but my doctor said all you get is expensive wee with any of these supplements. I do enjoy a cup of bone broth tho.

I currently use Nutravita and its fine in coffee and cheapish comparatively!

tried Wellguard and it was awful - didn’t even finish the tub!!

vital proteins nice, but more expensive.

magnic · 18/11/2024 12:26

I am currently taking a sachet of Absolute Collagen daily. Doesn't taste great but the difference in my hair, skin and nails is quite unbelievable.

I signed up to a subscription and received £75 worth of products free (face serum, eye serum and a gorgeous make up bag). I currently using them and am tempted to add these to my subscription when I run out

I also have put a code on the referral codes section of mn. Just search Absolute Collagen and it should there.

Good luck

I have had a bad hip for ages - years and years. Had physio, etc. I use Kollo marine collagen and it's worked wonders. As long as I take it I am more or less pain free. I used to take paracetamol or ibuprofen every day, sometimes more than once. I can't remember the last time I needed it. It's not cheap but i don't want to have to take painkillers all the while.

Allthecatseverywhereallatonce · 18/11/2024 12:40

I use ancient and brave bovine collagen. I do think it has helped with my skin and joints. I haven't used the marine one. What does it taste like? I add mine to my morning coffee, I do whisk it in but it has no flavour.
I did try absolute collagen 🤢 I have never tasted anything like it. The pain with this company is you have to phone to cancel it.

Ancient and brave is really easy to modify or change orders online.

Koulibiak · 18/11/2024 12:41

I would recommend the Freja bone broth sachets (chicken or beef). They taste great and contain 6-7 g collagen, plus lots of protein. I have a cup daily for lunch - it’s filling, adds to my water intake, and is low cal. Perfect combo.

ShiftAMountain · 18/11/2024 12:45

I haven't used the marine one. What does it taste like?

Like someone has added mouldy/dusty yeast to my coffee. Or perhaps yeasty dust. Sad

Not that I know what dusty yeast tastes like, but that's the closest description I could think of Grin

Florence4170 · 18/11/2024 13:06

The Kollo marine is fine. It's viscous and comes in a tube. I usually just neck it from the tube but you can mix with water. I think it tastes a bit mangoey. I think they will probably send you a free sample if you look on their website

FlappingMadly · 18/11/2024 17:15

The marine one has a taste but it’s not strong and you get used to it very quickly.

Scarlettpixie · 20/11/2024 09:20

Does anyone use a vegan collagen?

SilenceInside · 20/11/2024 09:23

Scarlettpixie · 20/11/2024 09:20

Does anyone use a vegan collagen?

I was wondering about this too. It obviously isn't going to be collagen as that's alway animal derived, but is there any point to the supplements in vegan "collagen" if you're already taking multivitamins?

JurassicPark4Eva · 20/11/2024 09:24

I thought oral collagen had been debunked for benefiting skin and hair?

FlappingMadly · 20/11/2024 12:28

Ancient and Brave has a vegan one.

ginnybag · 20/11/2024 14:36

Freesoul sachets. Not the cheapest, but easy enough to either just drink (it's strong) or add to water, which is what I do.

I've been consistent with it (more or less) daily for nearly three months. My hair is thickening, my skin is great, the knee pain I was having has gone....

ThirdStorm · 20/11/2024 14:42

I'm using Ancient and Brave, bovine collagen. I've been taking it for 6 weeks (still on first jar) in my coffee. I can't taste a thing so its been no hassle at all. I'm taking following a GP recommendation for peri and the hair loss I've been experiencing. I have notice I'm brushing out less hair so I'm choosing to believe the collagen (along with the biotin) I'm taking is having a positive effect!

Somebody said to me it is better to take both marine and bovine, so I'm wondering if my next jar will be marine and I'll alternate each day!

Bestthriller · 10/02/2025 06:15

I’m about to splurge on ancient and brave collagen… those you were taking on this thread, do you still take? Recommend? Any thoughts from anyone? It’s quite an investment

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 10/02/2025 07:21

I do. Still take their Wild Collagen every day. Skin, hair and nails still looking good to the point where a couple of friends have asked what I am using!

Also, I was away recently and the only supplement I didn’t take with me was the collagen and my knee hurt again. Now I am home, it’s easing. Who knows if it really is but I’m not stopping it!!

MH0084 · 10/02/2025 07:25

Collagen is just another source of protein.
When digested, it will be broken down into amino acids just like any other source.
It's the same as having a complete protein shake (like whey or vegan alternative) for a fraction of the price.
A lot of people see results taking collagen but that essentially down to adding more protein in their diets.
Having said that, if you think collagen is the easiest way to add more protein to your diet, go for it.
Otherwise, save the money and just eat more protein!

NigelHarmansNewWife · 10/02/2025 07:31

@MH0084 you mean a protein shake is a fraction of the price, surely?

Every time I am feeling swayed by ads for collagen I look up if there's any proof it works and so far no, there isn't. Eat more lean protein, lift weights/do weight bearing exercise.

Bestthriller · 10/02/2025 08:31

I have no issue with pain and I exercise very regularly and eat well. I would be taking collagen purely for skin and hair and nails… if that makes a difference?
