lespameo · 10/11/2024 00:20

Ok so the title makes me sound like I'm an alcoholic but I'm not. I like a Pinot on a weekend but I don't know when to stop really and I am asking for some help/ support

Tonight's scenario.. had 3 wines at a family meal. Kids to bed, have another wine.
Partner goes to bed (10pm).

I want to party so crack open a bottle of wine. Party for one. This isn't normal is it:
Don't eat owt but want to drink Pinot.

Now iv havd 6 x pinots and I'm full on classing myself as an alcoholic

How long have you been on MJ?

FusionChefGeoff · 10/11/2024 02:07

If you are drinking when you don't actually want want to - then that definitely sounds problematic.

Why are you so sure you're not an alcoholic?

Kittensat36 · 10/11/2024 02:18

I had something like that my first week on Mountjaro, but in my case it was tea. (I drink tea in place of alcohol)
I was practically chewing teabags
Not the same, I know. But maybe it messes with our brains in mad ways.

Littleannoyingperson · 10/11/2024 07:30

Op if I read this correctly this isn’t a sudden new occurrence since starting mounjaro? It’s fairly typical?

Sparkletastic · 10/11/2024 07:44

It sounds like you are intermittently binge drinking. Is that right?

Eminybob · 10/11/2024 07:49

How long have you been on MJ?
I found that at first it didn't really affect my desire to drink wine, but over time as I moved up through the doses it really did. I could easily get through a bottle and a half on a weekend night, now I struggle with 2 glasses in the same way I struggle to eat a full meal.

This has been one of the biggest benefits for me, as I would definitely say my drinking was problematic and the cause of a lot of my weight gain. Give it time, hopefully it will have the same benefit for you.

Yes I’m not convinced this is the op has suddenly stadted binge drinking when she took mounjaro as some folks are reading it. I suspect this is the op is a binge drinker and the fact she’s on mounjaro has not stopped it,

DelilahBucket · 10/11/2024 08:23

Sorry OP but two bottles of wine, one of which was on your own after everyone else had gone to bed because you want to "party" on your own is a big problem. You can't start with "I'm not an alcoholic" and end with with "I'm an alcoholic". You have a drink problem. Alcoholics don't necessarily drink all day every day.
Mounjaro isn't going to solve the problem, it isn't a magical drug. You need further help, perhaps from your GP or AA.

Iamthemoom · 10/11/2024 10:27

It's had the exact opposite affect on me which I've heard from others too. I barely want a drink and can manage two at most but two glasses of wine on mj and I have a horrendous hangover! It definitely affects the part of your brain related to alcohol but odd it's having that affect on you. Maybe speak to your gp or provider about it?

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 10/11/2024 10:42

Hi OP. You’ll get no judgment from me: pre MJ my fondness for a drink was a major reason why I got so fat and if I’m honest was starting to get to the point where it was a problem.

I was one of the lucky ones for whom MJ completely killed my desire to drink and I now drink only occasionally and can stop in a way I never could before. It sounds like you had the best part of two bottles last night, which is a binge for anyone but carries additional risks when you are taking a GLP1. Doing this on MJ is going to put your kidneys and pancreas under serious additional pressure and in extreme cases could make you very ill. If you want to stop there is help available. I would start by finding a local AA meeting. Good luck Flowers

Sounds like my relationship with alcohol. I’ve been teetotal for over a year and can’t recommend it highly enough (I lost no weight through ditching the wine but it’s been the best thing I’ve ever done for my physical and mental health)

FoodieToo · 10/11/2024 13:55

I tend to overdo the wine at weekends. But since I went up to 5mg I have no desire to drink at all . It's great !!!

Doggymummar · 10/11/2024 13:57

I can drink on MJ it makes me feel sick

lespameo · 10/11/2024 14:00

I've been on MJ for 7 weeks and I've lost a stone, with another stone to go.
Currently on 5mg.
I appreciate everyone's replies. I was certainly hoping that I would lose the desire to drink but it's not happened yet. Definitely need to change my relationship with alcohol.

It sounds like you know that’s excessive OP. Perhaps seek some support to get control of it.

WendyWagon · 10/11/2024 14:12

I'm a Wegovy user. I'm also an ex alcoholic.
There is a very good long running thread on alcohol support. Many posters and advice.

Sadteacher · 10/11/2024 14:42

I am a big wine drinker. I hoped I’d go off it but I haven’t. I have cut down though, which maybe is a healthier way. I could easily drink a whole bottle of wine or more, but 2 glasses last me all evening now. I’m on my 3rd pen, up to 7.5. Like you, I’m thinking I need to change my relationship with wine long term.

YouAreEffluentKim · 10/11/2024 15:27

I have been on mj since since March and have always been a big wine drinker. I decided to do Sober October which I often do, to have a big reset and break from drinking. I have since had a glass or two this last week and definitely feel satisfied after 1 with no desire to drink every night or have more than 1 or 2 glasses if I do have a drink.

Perhaps try taking a good few weeks off altogether then see if that helps?

onthecoast · 11/11/2024 10:13

MJ affects people in different ways. I’ve been a big drinker ie almost daily for 40 years. I’ve been on MJ for 3 weeks. I’ve twice had a drink (family social occasions that had been in the calendar for ages). First one I had 1 beer all night with no desire to drink more. The second I went overboard on the wine and had a monster hangover. I’ve just lost my desire to drink regularly. No weight loss yet but stopping drinking has been a godsend.

FlappingMadly · 11/11/2024 19:03

@lespameo circling back to this I think you should tell your GP you’re on MJ and be honest about what you drink. As MJ targets insulin, hence pancreas, I really don’t know if drinking puts you at risk. At least have a chat about it.
