WL injections and mini pill

I really want to get started with using a weight loss injection but I’m worried about something I read about it interfering with the mini pill. I am very reluctant to change my contraception as it is the only option that works for me. Does anyone have any advice or experience to share?

It does affect oral contraceptives. You are advised to use alternative contraception for the first 4 weeks of each dose.

MJ commonly has GI side effects so if you suffer from them they could also affect the pill.

An alternative method is definitely needed.

Only found this as I was searching for something else. According to Voy, another method of contraception is required for mounjaro, but not for wegovy, unless you have vomiting and diarrhea as per usual for hormonal contraception. I asked this directly to their clinician and they confirmed wegovy can be taken with hormonal contraception. Hope this helps

You don't have go come off the mini pill but you would need to use condoms (or possibly cycle tracking) to prevent pregnancy especially if you have digestive upsets.

Coming back to update. I’m doing my W3 injection today. I’ve been taking the mini pill as normal. I’ve had no stomach upsets at all (so far) but I started spotting two days ago with more bleeding today. I would really love to know what the Mounjaro - mini pill interaction is! Like I say I’ve had absolutely no digestive issues these past two weeks but clearly somehow the pill isn’t working as well.

You shouldn't rely on the mini pill alone so hope you are using something else in addition if you want to avoid pregnancy

It's nothing to do with digestive issues, it's to do with the slowing down of the pill being absorbed making it less effective

I think it's something about mounjaro working in two ways so you need another method too, but wegovy you don't as it only works in one way. But if you're on mounjaro you should probably use a different method. There is an implant that is progesterone only, just like the mini pill, if you don't want to change to an estrogen pill

I chose not to risk things and I'm still taking my pill and using condoms, getting pregnant would not be welcome. It slows down your digestion, potentially slowing absorption of the drug, also stomach issue could mean it's flushing out of your system. I just didn't want to chance it. Although I have no libido anymore because of MJ so that practically (almost) solves the problem itself!

Caffeinequeen91 · 07/12/2024 20:42

I’m using another method too so no worries there. I was just curious that it’s happened even though I’ve had no digestive issues.

@Pashazade is low libido a thing with MJ?

@Caffeinequeen91 it doesn't appear to be a common side effect from what I can gather, but it can mess with your dopamine levels, good for not wanting sweet stuff and general food cravings, bad on the transmitting "sex would be nice" message from brain to body. Or vice versa but it feels like someone has cut the lines and I hate it. DH is being very supportive but it's making things feel tricky atm. However we will get through and I've no plans to stay on MJ long term.
